I think the Blues always taxied with the slats IN. Permanently.
The A-4 had simple gravity slats. One of the parts of the preflight was to shove them in and make sure they fell back down.
Since it was possible for the slats to come out asymmetrically, the Blues bolted them in so they wouldn’t get any…surprises…when they were three feet from their wingman.
Thanks…I spoke with Phil at Virtavia, and he suggested edits to the XML files to remove the “SLATS” section (animation), so now I’ve got it, as shown in the photo attached.
Good news! There’s an update on SimMarket with a number of improvements, including a new takeoff/landing model that makes handling a lot better. You still need to pay attention, especially in a crosswind, but it’s worlds better now! I’ll actually finally start flying this one.
Would you say it’s worth it now? It’s dropped on marketplace and I’m huge fan of the Skyhawk, but I don’t want to be let down. I’m already being let down with indiafoxtecho putting it off for several other planes first that I don’t care about
It originated from FSX, and you can see this especially in the texturing and external cockpit glass. It’s “solid” for me but it’s not high fidelity. Do with that info what you will.
Yep, I enjoy flying it now. You still want to minimize a crosswind during takeoff/landing (true on the real Scooter as well) but if you do that, the ground handling is manageable now, and it’s a fun plane to fly low-and-fast.
It’s not high-detail (IndiaFoxtEcho should cover that with their TA-4J, if they ever finish it), but for $15, I feel it’s well worth the investment as a fun, historic plane.
I have a very personal connection to a real Skyhawk (the one that got an A2A kill with a Zuni rocket), as I helped restore it in Oshkosh while I was in high school. I don’t hate this plane and will definitely be flying it more. The roll seems sensitive, but I know the roll rate was absolutely eye watering in real life.
Still can’t wait for the Indiafoxtecho one, but this’ll do for now.
Middle picture is the first flight irl (my pic)
Bottom picture is my feet
scooter is a lot of fun on the xbox, i think the roll rate might be a bit optimistic over 300 Knts but mess around under and she bites. like the Aussie navy livery too.
hopefully the Hampton will follow it over
The real life A4 could roll 720 degrees per second at full deflection.
How ever pilots were limited to 360dps due to potential structural damage and physical stresses on the pilot
i think it was the imax film on the Blue Angels which detailed the 720 degree per second. ironically watched at the u.s. airforce museum! what ever they did for the film it was shocking on the big screen. this interpretation is faster at speed but also found push the speed and this scooter will complain. needs to be flown like the a certain F-5e which is also a lot of fun.
Never got to see the A-4 fly which is a pity.
In one of Diesel Thunder’s latest YouTube videos, he was talking with Jet Jarod who flies a civilian owned TA-4, who said that unless you have thighs like toothpicks (my paraphrasing,) you aren’t going to get the stick to full side deflection, so the full roll rate is rarely experienced.
If you haven’t seen Diesel Thunder’s videos, I recommend them. He’s a volunteer with the Collings Foundation working to get an F-4D into flight condition. He also does some DCS stuff. Jet Jarod also has a channel, but I’m less familar with his work. I’m watching one of his TA-4 videos now.
