Remembering Read Backs

Good evening forum,

This may be more for the corporate pilots but wondering, when getting your clearances from ATC, are you jotting down the information into a pre filled sheet and just plugging in the blanks?

Using Pilot2ATC I have to do the read backs and I write down on my kneeboard what is said but it’s hard to keep up and get it all so intend to have to use the cheat window in P2ATC to make sure I get it all and then read back.

Wondering how you do it in real world.

Thanks.

I use these to not down my ATC instructions. You really have to come up with shorthand that works for you to do it efficiently.

I use a shorthand method on a sheet. Everyone usually has their way of jotting down the info. It can get tricky sometimes when ATC updates or changes your IFR plan… (which they seem to love to do to me!! :joy:)

CRAFT

Clearance Limit (Destination)
Routing (Filed, although ATC can change it - sim does not simulate this, hence “As Filed”)
Altitude (Enroute Altitude - i.e., Cruise Altitude)
Frequency (Departure Freq)
Transponder (Code)

November Seven Seven Seven Alpha Hotel is cleared to Martha’s Vineyard As Filed. Takeoff Runway 28, Climb and Maintain 7,000 feet. Departure Frequency is 125 point 750, Squawk 0633. Clearance Void 30 Minutes from now.

Trivia - 30 minutes is generous for an uncontrolled field IFR take-off window. Busy sectors usually provide 5-7 minutes max once you’re No. 1 for Departure.

I know you’re a P2ATC user, so their Clearance will be closer to CRAFT than the sim’s. Nonetheless - very useful since CRAFT is RL teaching.

Beats talkng to FSS relay to get Clearance. Or a sketchy “barely at max VFR vox range” to Sector. :sunglasses:

I found these on flightsim.to

This combined with a short hand that works / makes sense to me I have not had to rely on the cheater window in P2ATC.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Here’s a couple more links that could be helpful.

I usually write down what I think my clearance will be, based on my flight plan, what other aircraft are getting cleared for and the charts. Then when I get it, if different to what I anticipated, I only have to amend a small few details.
