Render Scaling Math

Say I’m running 4K native at 70% render scaling. Is the render scaling slider bar a percentage of both the horizontal and vertical resolutions OR a percentage of the original pixel count?

A) Percentage of horizontal and vertical:
3840 x 2160 = 8294400
38400.7 + 21600.7 = 4064256

This is effectively 4064256 / 8294400 or 49% the original pixel count

OR

B) Percentage of the original pixel count:
0.7 * 3840 x 2160 = 5806080 or 70% the original pixel count

I do not have the answer myself, but I would say that it is very easy to test.

You just need to enable the FPS counter in the Developer mode, and you will be able to see the “real” rendered resolution and the “final” pixel ratio.

When you change the render scaling, you can see the number changing.

Best regards,
Dani

You are a genius sir. I tried your suggestion and found that the answer is indeed A. I have used the FPS counter forever but didn’t even see the resolution indicated due to the small font size.

I think it’s the pixel dimension. 4K w. 50% pixel scale spits out an image pretty much identical to a 1920*1080 screenshot, both pixel wise and FPS wise. Should be easy enough to verify.
