Yes, its obvious now that it needs more changes than “just a few values”. And its for the better that Asobo takes the time to make these adjustments carefully.
You did a great job with this, and with the values we found now, im already very happy! I can enjoy the sim now also during sunsets much more.
We can be very thankful to have such geniousses like you in our communitty. Thank you
And also shotout to @smitty9792 for the idea with the HEX editor!
Let’s hope the talented developers within the Asobo team are passionate about this as some of us and find ways to adjust the things that are needed to make this all work properly. I am not expecting them to do anything with SU13 as it’s quite close. But a small mini patch that is not constrained by a timeline would be nice “when it’s ready”.
Yep, I’d rather Asobo take their time and do it right, than have them rush in.
I must say though, I’m incredibly thankful for your input. Even if all these hex edits just end up being a proof of concept, it’s a glorious proof of concept already, and I think it illustrates the points you made in your opening post very well. After all, the proof is in the pudding, and it’s way more convincing to see it in the MSFS engine that it is on a theoretical colour blend.
My sincere thanks for your efforts!
edit: now I have to try it in HDR Horrible for screenshots, but amazing on screen.
Forgive me, I have only just stumbled across this thread, and again forgive me, I am sorry I don’t have time to read 300+ posts right now.
The results shown in screenshots are clearly a massive improvement.
You mentioned that you are not expecting them to do anything in SU13, are you expecting them to do anything at all, or just hopeful? I.e. have they acknowledged this?
MS and Asobo are big companies, and have processes in place for rolling out new features. SU13 has been in the works for months, so it’s not as simple as “ow, some new values, let’s plug them in, release them, and see what happens”. They have processes to follow, and things take time.
This topic was made 12 days ago, so way too short ago to realistically make it into SU13, even if the devs are aware (which they are).
I do not really blame many around here who are not familiar with software development practices, processes and realities because similar feelings are expressed by the high management in companies where I work(ed)…
I think it was a mod somewhere up above that mentioned the development team has for sure seen this. I don’t think any official word has come down on implementation, but sounds like they are at least investigating. Another post mentioned the OP’s work on Gethub was forked by an Asobo developer, which means they have actually looked into it beyond just acknowledging the thread exists.
There is the option to take screenshots in developer mode that captures HDR screenshots properly. It’s a little more work if you don’t already use it, but it gets the job done.

To be honest as complex as modern software development is, this is really just changing some numbers in a file.
yes, but as you’ve seen from my personal experiments above (if you cared to read through all of it), the stock numbers from the paper don’t give the required results (way too much green hue in the sky).
so no, it’s not as simple as ‘changing some numbers in a file’.
My question may be a little off topic but I would like to know.
.
Is it possible to attenuate the night in HDR, making it less intense in the absence of light?
.
MSFS with HDR and a monitor with a high level of nits makes the night experience a game of hide and seek… if we could attenuate how dark the night is with HDR we would have a complete adjustment.
yep, drifting off topic, but try playing with the date.
With a new moon it will be very dark (as it should be). With a full moon it’ll be pretty bright at night (also as it should be). Just change the date by about 15 days, and you should see very different results;
We don’t recommend editing your .exe file as it can impact Microsoft Flight Simulator negatively and may struggle in the future with updates to the sim. We ask that you refrain from conversing about this in the Official Forums. Thank you!
I’m really sorry about this, even though I mentioned the risks as a disclaimer and pointed out that it was a proof-of-concept & shouldn’t be repeated, it would be better if I hadn’t shared the offsets. I will be more careful to not post anything that can potentially cause breakage.
Thanks so much for sharing this! It is now apparent that the next big thing would be to improve the cloud formations. If you compare these MSFS screenshots to XP12 you can see much the clouds also contribute to realistic looking skies.
Asobo is the only one that can make meaningful changes to the ozone, mie and rayleigh.
My suggestion is to just contact Biology and work together.
Create some form of small package he can tweak around with and submit his values to the developers.
