So the specs will change with the advent of FS2024 and I have an R5 5600x 6-core, 12-thread in an AM4 socket. I’ve always thought that the R7 5800 x3d, 8-core, 16-thread would be a good replacement to make maximum use of the AM4 platform. But now MS/Asobo is introducing multithreading, so is an R9 5950x 16-core, 32-thread a better purchase? Or is it too early to know? Or should I just wait until I can abandon the AM4 platform and change to an AM5 motherboard, ram and processor? Which is most cost effective?
About a year ago, I moved my 5800x to a 5800x3d, as at that point i wasn’t too keen on buying and fitting a new mobo, RAM and CPU. I fly in VR, so place a fairly high set of challenges to the CPU and it has served me very well, alongside an RTX4080super.
Now getting to your question, it would appear that MSFS2024 will not be as heavily CPU bottlenecked as it is with MSFS2020 and that would tend to suggest that my 5800x3d should do the job even better in MSFS2024. However, there does appear to be another factor at play with MSFS2024, as it’s ideal spec appears to suggest that 64GB would be the way to go. If i were being forced to double my existing RAM, i’d be more tempted to get a new Mobo, a new cpu and 64GB of DDR5.
Just my two-penneth, for what it’s worth.
I’m also lining up an upgrade this fall. I’ve been eyeing the new Ryzen 9 9950x if I can get my hands on one. Multithreading is working well now in the sim world, and it will only get better. I’ve got a i7/11gen/3080ti that gets the job done, but I’m aiming for maximum threading ability in the next one.
I think at this point it would be wise to wait and evaluate once the sim is released and stabilized. Currently the best possible msfs CPU, 7800x3d is inflated in price possibly due to poor zen5 launch and 7600x3d launch. But if you can wait, then you will have more context on what you should get. May be your 6 cores properly utilized will be pretty good, may be 8 cores will be good enough for ultra settings, may be you need 12 cores if you want to run extra software like gsx / fsltl / beyond atc etc. At that point if the rumours are to be believed, Intel arrow lake CPUs would have launched and even if you are not interested in Intel CPUs, it may shuffle some cpu prices in which you are interested in. Also, in a few more months, zen5 x3d chips will probably launch and you can take a much more informed decision than you can now.
Hardware availability is not ideal yet. I am keeping an eye on the market for the next few weeks. We should see the usual run up of inventory before the fall sales. If not, squeak a few more months out of this hardware.
