Reverb G2 ruined by Black Spots - USB overcurrent

Just a bit of advise for Reverb G2 users. My headset screens started to show some black spots (not round) always in the same place, some kind of melted LCD areas if I could describe it is like a tear. Not only on MSFS 2020 but on any sort of visuals and applications.

Reading and researching I found that is related to USB over current. Funny enough a couple of weeks ago my computer started to show a warning about USB overcurrent when my BIOS started, which I couldnt figure it out until now. I was noticing that my headset was getting warm on the bottom when I was using it and thats where the spots appeared.

It seems that there is some sort of issue using the external power + USB3.2 (Red) sockets as they double power your G2, forums (and manual) are recommending to use the external power plus standard USB3 (blue) ports - be careful with other colour - or disabling the power on USB3.2 to avoid the issue.

My G2 is problably ruined because this is not covered by the warranty, anyway, I leave this topic as a warning for other users in case you step into the same problem.

Doesn’t the G2 require USB 3? I have to use a blue port on my motherboard, not red, to get G2 to work.

You can use a converter plug too I think that is included with the G2 if you don’t have a usb-c port.

I am afraid the mistake was to use a red port :frowning:
Good luck with RMA, I hope it won’t be too expensive.

I wasn’t able to turn anything up after a quick search about USB 3.2 ports damaging the G2. To be honest, I’d think that this would be worth of a recall if it were true. How on earth would plugging the G2 into a USB port and getting friend NOT be covered under warranty?

HP prescribes to connect the device to a USB 3.1 port. However the USB port type is supposed to determine only the MAX voltage and current deliverable, while the internal circuitry of the device has to tell the port what to actually deliver.
I believe he has a chance with RMA at least theoretically (I read bad stories on HP regarding the G2).

Thanks, thinking again about the problem, I wonder why my mother board complained of USB port overcurrent, does it mean that the port is delivering more current than usual or there is more current on the circuit infused by the G2 that was impacting the motherboard? In other words “from” my pc or “into” my pc?

Because if is “from” it means that my system fried the G2 for some reason but if is “into” my G2 was faulty and was trying to fry my motherboard!

I never had this issue, check this if you haven’t seen it already…

Thanks, then the problem is “into” the system, so for some reason the combination of the usb current and the ac adapter generated the over current state, damaging my G2.

Now I use a different port and the warning is gone but my G2 is damaged.

I also noticed that my G2 was quite hot on the bottom position of the screen (where the dots appeared), not the same temp at the top of the screen, I dont know if that was normal or is related.

Will check again RMA but first time they said not covered.

Thanks guys and keep an eye on it if you ever experienced the warning or use red usb ports.

Cheers

For what it’s worth mine only works in the red USB-C port on my gigabyte X570 and I’ve had no issues… I think this is more related to a specific fault in that mobo or headset.

Good luck, I wouldn’t accept no on the RMA front!
