Reverb G2 v2 + x570 Motherboards + Ryzen 5900x + RTX 3090 + 32 GB Ram

Greetings all,

I recently posted as looking to upgrade my Rift CV1, i am getting more tempted with the Reverb G2, though, some concern, and one question mostly, that HP seems to be avoiding, did not answer me on their website live chat, asnwered some, but that one they seemed to avoided it, in the QA section of their Can Website Store, i asked the question 2 times and non seemed to be answered.

Basicly, as of November 2022, does anyone knows for sure if the Reverb G2, v2 works now, with x570 motherboard, more precisely the X570 Aorus Elite Wifi, without any tweaks, like adding a USB HUB card or forcing PCI-E 3.0.

And also, what i am wondering is, if anyone has a system close to mine, i am wondering how smooth it will run. I was able to pull out something not too bad with my CV1, but yeah when i fly over some cities, big cities like Montreal, Paris, New York… i can get some stutter lower than 700 ft and going fast, but mostly looking down below me. Does that mean it might suffer also a bit getting a more recent Headset, or maybe more recent headset anyways runs better with newer technology?

My system:
Motherboard: X570 Aorus Elite Wifi
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
RAM: 32 GB 3600 MHz RAM
GPU: MSI Gaming Trio Nvidia RTX 3090
Running system and games on SSDs
Windows 10 Home v.21H2

Thanks

EDIT: Nov. 10: I finaly got my Reverb, all is working well, no issues, now my problem is to have a setup that runs smooth, as smooth as my CV1 was, problem is, i love to fly low, over cities… fooling around with OpenXR Tool kit now… it is getting a bit better, but… :frowning:

I have the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) motherboard. Sometime this summer a bios update fixed my motherboard problem with the USB connection. I assume your motherboard implemented the same fix so just update your bios to the latest and you’ll probably be good.

I don’t have a 3090 (5800x and 6900xt) but have the sim running great. I push my settings as high as possible until stuttering begins. Then I keep the settings there and put a 36 fps cap limit on the sim and it runs great with the cap.

What you would get with the G2 is a huge boost in clarity. I had a rift s and swithed to the G2 and the improvement is huge. You will also get a good performance boost because you won’t need to run the game through steamvr. You can run it directly from Window’s version of OpenXR rather than Steam’s OpenXR and the WMR version is much better optimized for this sim so you get better performance just from that.

Good luck.

I’ve had this setup with an MSI X570 motherboard. The G2 V2 works fine with the RTX3090. The only upgrade I’d suggest in an M.2 drive instead of SSDs. I’ve never had any setup problems.

my system is on 980 PRO 500GB PCIe NVMe 4.0 M.2 Internal SSD and MSFS is on a 980 PRO 1TB PCIe NVMe 4.0 M.2 Internal SSD if i am not mistaken.

Perfect… Gen4 gets the most out of the system too.

The newer G2 do not have the connectivity problems because they have a newer thicker connection cord. I tried the G2 a year ago, would not connect with motherboard. That one was purchased directly from HP via their eBay store.
But, a month ago I bought another G2 on Ebay also direct from HP because I read online they have the new better connecting wire. It connects perfectly every time.

By the way click on “xx many sold” on the ebay sales page and you will see the price HP charges on their own official eBay sales page for the exact same G2 has ranged from $350 to $599 over the last 2 months. Up and down, up and down every few days. Check the price every day might be a good strategy. I paid $399 direct from HP on eBay. 30 day returns, and the seller (HP) pays for shipping on a return.

It’s $399 right now sold by and shipped by HP (on eBay). Probably will rise tomorrow, but who knows. the item title is HP Reverb G2 Virtual Reality Headset

interesting, good to know, so i am getting closer to get one. So far, i checked on HP Canada, they are at $629 CAD (+/- $466 USD)

I run a MSRock x570 Phantom Gaming 4 motherboard fully updated in BIOS, but the V1 cable would still not work properly with any of my PC’s USB ports (I used the USB C port in my Radeon 6800XT GPU). When I bought the 4090 I had to get the version 2 cable, which now works fine on my motherboard with the USB adaptor.

I bought my cable off eBay in Australia. I got mine for $129 Aussie dollars or $81.18 in US dollars.

The cable is not only better, but has a new larger circuit board which cleans up the USB signal and also features an on/off switch. Beware though, as on mine a connected headset will power up on system boot, so you have to either unplug the power adaptor or just hold down the power switch for a few seconds to turn it off.

Yeah, i will need for sure do some readings when i get it. I always used the Occulus App+OTT, not SteamVR, so all this OpenZXR, WMR and stuff are quite new to me.

Also looking at my ports, chances i will need to use the USB-C to USB adapater since my only USB-C in the front/top of my tower, and of course, the GPU connections at the rear with other USBs 3.0/3.1… wonder if i loose amything using the adapter as USB rather than USB-C.

Me too when I had the rift s, and I think in that case it uses the streamvr openxr version. That’s why I mentioned it will be better using WMR’s version and that it runs better. Note the G2 is a higher resolution so it will put more stress on your GPU so you may have to lower settings a little to get acceptable performance but the clarity improvement is well worth it.

No problem. I’ve used both a usb-c and usb-a with an adapter and don’t see any difference.

I have a Ryzen 5950x, 3090ti and the Reverb G2 and I say that the G2 ist pure â– â– â– â– !
-I need to reposition the tracking every 30 seconds.
-sometimes it seems that the Headset is reconnecting, sometimes not
-Fps absolutely unsatisfiing

I have both cables and i have bought an pcie usb adapter. NVIDIA also send me an “VR signal enhancer” or how it is called, which emproved NOTHING!

i have now a setup from over 3000€ and i cannot play without problems…i will sell all the ■■■■!

Sorry to hear that man :frowning: That is the thing with VR, so many possibilities with many different hardware, softwares/drivers versions, manufacturers etc… that leaves the possibilities of experience different between lots of people… I am crossing fingers my experience will be going toward people going well with similar systems that going wrong :frowning: But from what seen with my CV1 and my old system when i bought my VR, sometimes, not trying might never answers your questions, never expected VR to work on my old system and it was usable at the end a few years… we will see, but anyways, the more i read, the more it ended up that all VR headset leads to people having issues, some all goods, some had hard time to configure/setup, while others not, some had performance issues, some others not…

So all VR headset at the end is sort of a gamble, non of them leads to all comments , all experiences being 100% flawless. After all, i think VR as we speak is the most demanding element you can install, have our system.

Yeah that is what i am telling myself, might not be able top run at it maximum, but i am sure a lower setting with the Reverb G2 can lead at better quality as the CV1 medium to higher settings. I guess if i am satisfied with the quality of the CV1 as i never tried anything else besides it so far, i will be happy with the upgrade…

I use an C to A USB adaptor too. In fact the G2 Headset included this adaptor in the box. It works perfectly.

If you are you using an x570 motherboard, you may need to upgrade both the BIOS your AMD chipset drivers.

Well, the new toy came in today, just finished installing stuff, for now all worked A1, basic settings, i guess tomorrow i will tackle MSFS. Can’t wait to see in Sim, but so far, just normal settings in headset, and it is so freaking sharp, as for now, i do not regret the move  We will see once i get in MSFS and how stuff handles.

Anyone with similar system as shared on initial post, have any tips to share, settings, tried most stuff i could quickly find, but still a bit disapointed with performance when flying low, some settings i found with similar GPU, CPU, but no way i can achieve what they have… Later i will give a try to install Open XR Toolkit and see… I did not much played with settings yet though at the time i ended up finish to install etc…

I have both a V1 and a V2 G2 and have not had any issues with either version plugged directly into the USB C port on my Gigabyte Aorus x570 Master board. If I plug the V2 G2 into my partners Asus Rog Strix X570 mobo it will only work on the USB A port and on my sons MSI B550 based mobo the V1 needs a powered USB hub to work. It’s a complete lottery but I’m glad yours worked out of the box.

I have been using a Varjo Aero for the last 6 months but recently went back to the G2 whilst Varjo worked through some issues with RTX4090 compatibility and I was pleasantly surprised how well it held up for a headset 1/5th of the price. When I used to use the G2 with a 3080ti I found that OpenXR Toolkit was a gamechanger when using foveated rendering. I could use mostly high/ultra settings at full 100% resolution (TAA) and still maintain a pretty solid 30-45 FPS most areas. I have a post somewhere else on this forum with the exact settings. But the problem with these comparisons is that there is a significant subjective element to it all. Some people can’t tolerate less than ~90FPS enabled through motion reprojection whilst others, myself included, are happy with anything over 30FPS and would rather ratchet up the visual quality. For me the key thing is frametime consistency. I would take a solid 30FPS over a stuttery 90FPS every day of the week.

Thanks, helpful, i will for sure try OpenXR Toolkit.
I am on the same line as you are, i am satisfied with 30 FPS, not sure if it got an habbit of used to 30 FPS as 99% of the stuff i do as motion design are around 25-30 FPS so i guess my eyes got used to that frame rate  But with my CV1 anyways, i had FPS locked at 30 in OTT so that is not something that will be different, if i can get 27-30 fps and no stutter, i am happy.
