Reverb G2 with a Nvidia 1080

I’m thinking of purchasing a G2 for VR. I currently have a Rift S and wanted something with a bit more clarity. Most of the posts Ive been reading are with people that have 20 and 30 series cards. Is there anyone that has a Reverb G2 with a base 1080? I don’t want to purchase it if the performance will be dreadful. It seems like a long way off before Nvidia gets their heads out of the sand and actually produces more of the 30 series cards so Ill be stuck with this for a while it seems.

My computer specs are a i9 10850k, msi z490 wifi MB, 32gb Ram and Nvidia 1080.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing any input

I’ve got a G2 with a regular 1080. It works and it’s clearer than the Rift-S but you won’t be able to run the headset at it’s native resolution. I am running most everything on medium settings with some of the higher performance hogs in VR settings turned off.

In openXR I have it set to 50% which is basically halving the resolution of the headset and then in game render scaling is set to 80% which gives me more resolution back without a huge performance loss. My VR experience is smooth now in most cases and enjoyable.

However, I am looking at building a new PC to get a better VR experience with the G2. I’d like to be able to turn up the settings more and I can’t do that with the 1080.

I also use DCS and the G2 is much clearer there than in FS2020 and with better performance as well. I also however have several settings in DCS in the mid/low ranges.

@milavgeek Thanks for the reply! I had figured I would have to cut the devices power down so to speak. I’m fine with that since I will eventually get a more powerful card that will run it far better.

I am a glasses wearer and my glasses fit fine in the Rift S and even okay in the Quest 2. Should the G2 accommodate my glasses with no trouble if those two device do? I figured it would but it never hurts to ask.

I’ve been looking at so many headsets the last few days they are starting to bleed together. I thought the Valve Index was nice but the price really blew me away. No way am I paying 1k for a headset with a worse resolution that the G2 and have to put up with lighthouses!

Thanks again for the info, was much appreciated!

I don’t wear glasses (though I sometimes wonder if I should, lol) but from what I’ve read about the G2 and issues people are having it has been designed with glasses in mind. That’s why the face cushion is so thick to accommodate glasses. That’s also why many people are modding the face cushion to something smaller so their eyes get closer to the lenses to increase clarity and make the FOV/sweet spot larger. I also have this issue and am thinking of modding the cushion as well. The more I push the G2 to my face the clearer it gets. However it’s uncomfortable without modding. Anyway that’s a long answer to say that your glasses will be fine.

Thanks for you feedback. I am going to have to pass on this one it seems. I didn’t notice the way it fits. The head band is much like the elite strap for the Quest 2 which fits me very uncomfortably. If it had been a band like the Rift S (crown fit) it would have been a no brainer.

For some reason even the Quest 2’s elite headstrap puts pressure in areas that quickly become uncomfortable. It even manages to put downward pressure on my glasses causing them to dig into my nose which after around 10 mins becomes irritating and uncomfortable. That’s with adjusting the top strap.

So I’m stuck with the Rift S until someone makes a better headset with a similar headband. That or go for a 3 monitor setup and it doesn’t look like Asobo is a big hurry to provide support for that either…

I wear glasses, and with the quest 2 and the HP Reverb G1 my glasses touched the lenses. With the Reverb G2 I have no problem and much more comfortable than the quest 2 and G1

Have a look at this lotharen, it’s a link to a vr optician. They can make prescription lenses for vr headsets.I have them for the g1 and they work great.

I ordered some of those yesterday for my G2, but there is a 4-5 week wait to manufacture then delivery. Will update when they arrive. To the OP, don’t sweat too much about about not getting a 30 series yet, i’ve got a 3090FE and still have to turn down settings to get a good experience in VR. Maybe wait for the 40 or 50 series

Thanks for those reply’s everyone. Maybe I’m not locked into the Rift S then. I was just worried it would be uncomfortable like the Quest 2 and didn’t want to waste 600 bucks on something Ill regret.

Ill have to check out that vroptician…really sounds like a good deal so I won’t have to worry about wearing my glasses during my VR adventures.

Again, thank you all so much for chiming in on the Post!

I upgraded from a Rift to G2 and its great. I’m still on a GTX1080Ti and I agree that you can get decent visuals but most settings on medium. There is advice on this site about fine tuning settings for medium GPUs and I tried those yesterday. Improved result tremendously. Posting by CptLucky8. I think the head band G2 is most comfortable for me and I wear glasses too. I looked at Optician VR and for my script I was looking at nearly A$200 landed in Australia. Went to Specsavers and bought correction lenses only for $39!! I did read that the correction inserts decrease FOV somewhat and glasses work fine with G2, especially as the headphones dont actually press on the frames. I also find the G2 is much easier to put on and take off wearing glasses. My next project is to build PC capable running FS2020 at max settings. Might have to mortgage the house though. LOL

I also have a G2+1080 combo and agree with @milavgeek that MSFS is flyable with oXR=50% and RS=80%. Single-engine aircraft work better than the bigger aircraft.

I previously had a Samsung Odyssey where you noticed the screen door effect. That’s the first thing I noticed with the G2 - the screen door is no longer there, and with the higher resolution, everything looks more realistic.

Until I can upgrade my graphics card I’ll probably split my G2 VR time 50/50 between the larger aircraft in Aerofly FS2 which runs great with the 1080 and the single-engine aircraft in MSFS and hope future updates improve the performance.

I am running a 1080 and my new G2 too. The performance is par with my Rift S. MSFS2020 does perform very close to P3Dv5 if not identical. 20 to 35 fps.

DCS with the VR Mode or Warthunder do much better. Steady 45 to 70fps.
Not speaking about AFS2 which has the performance in 120+ fps.

XP with the Rift is perfectly well, as G2 does not work, I cannot test it.

Best G2 + GTX1080 experience so far with the following …

drivers - 457.30

followed simhangar’s Win10 tips for better MSFS VR (5 tips)

OXR latest preview
OXR 60%
Reproj Always on

MSFS 60%
other graphics settings - VR defaults (med/low)
Clear Skies
Small town airport
Baron G58

VR experience = smooth
Clarity = not sharp but flyable, reminds me of 1024x768 days
