[REVIEW] Key West airport (KEYW) by Orbx

It’s not a bad airport especially considering the very affordable price, but it’s not perfect, with a couple of design choices that I struggle to understand.

Here’s my review below, with plenty of video content if my opinion doesn’t suit your taste.

I’m sure some will wonder which is better between this and the one made by another relevant studio. I normally don’t do direct comparisons in reviews but I guess I can share my impressions here.

Both have relevant pros and cons. This one has a lot of buildings outside of the airport that help making up for the photogrammetry’s shortcomings (it’s detailed but a bit on the melty side), and it comes with the Cubana Antonov An-24RV that I’m not sure why anyone would omit (it’s right on the more popular approach), but the other one has some details on its side like better people models and open hangars with more details inside. Neither is what I’d consider a “great” airport, and both have a few inaccuracies in runways/aprons/taxiways, but both are priced relatively low which can make up for the shortcomings, so I’d say look at videos and go with what fits you better.

I agree with your comments 100%, at this time I’ve decided to go with Orbx over the other studio’s KEYW because the Orbx rendition has more building details such as the customs building that are absent from the other.

That’d be my personal choice as well (the Antonov is the clincher), but I wouldn’t really argue against anyone who went the other way as well.

Looks great but I will stick with the FSDT version.Besides FSDT offers a little more stuff around the island

It’s actually the opposite. FSDT’s add-on offers more within the airport (fences, hangar interiors, and such, excluding the area where the Antonov is), while Orbx’s includes more around the island.

The problem I ran into with the FSDT version of KEYW was scenery conflicts with Skydesigners’ NAS Key West. The KEYW install adds static F-18s to the nearby NAS that conflict with the much better static aircraft from Skydesigners (F-18s, F5s, C2A Greyhound, Gulfstream G-159, SH-60 SeaHawks, HH-60 Jayhawks).

I’ve since deleted the FSDT version in favor of the one from Orbx.

Woah woah. I didn’t know there was a NAS Key West scenery. Now I gotta buy it  Thanks.

The fact this location doesn’t have water masks is, at this point, something I’m prepared to take to the UN.

When you know what this sim can look like… it chafes. It really chafes.

You can find NAS Key West on simMarket.

Yep, found and bought

You’d think it’d be one of the first places they’d do…

There wasn’t any need to uninstall the scenery, just to solve a conflict with a scenery that has been released later, so we couldn’t foresee that.

The solution has been discussed on our forum, and it’s enough to remove the following two files from the FSDT package:

scenery\FSDT_KEYW\scenery\Simultech-KNQX-data.bgl
scenery\FSDT_KEYW\scenery\SIMULTECH-KNQX-EXCLUDE.BGL

Doing that, you can enjoy the better representation of the NAS, with the better representation of Key West.

what happens if I want both? Of course they cant exist side by side, would turning one on and the other off have any unforeseen side effects ( uninstalling, reinstalling etc) seems a silly question, but as the world starts to get populated will we run into these problems. Asobo Madrid and LVFR Madrid

There should not be any problem having one turned off and one active. I have both and saw no issue.

Just completely uninstall the one you’re not using at any given time.
