RNAV/gps approaches

Hi, can a GARMIN 1000 be configured to take you to minima on auto ? I’m having a heck of a time leaving my FAF altitude into a descent to minimas. It’s doing my head in! Tried multiple tutorials and approaches…I’m just getting it. Any help is appreciated, thanks

I’ll be not exactly helpful probably,

but take to account that some call voice system as ‘Minimums…’ is send if you correctly define Minimums inside Garmin (MSL or Radar ALT) and your aircraft is capable to do that. Then after passing condition you set, this call voice is comming and you can be in right time to do decision

Can a GARMIN 1000 be configured to take you to minima on auto?

I also answer as I understand your question → Yes, everytime if you’ve set RNP approach and set APR on AP. Simply your VS is handled with AP. If you mean that after your click on APR your aircraft didn’t start descent, then this is another issue, many times reported in short history here.

I’ll add some info to what OMICO said,

If you want the G1000 auto pilot to fly the rnav approach with the descent, you must configure the airplane correctly for the approach, i.e correct speed by setting the correct power setting and at least one notch of flaps. Don’t forget G1000 doesn’t have auto throttle, so its up to the pilot to maintain correct speeds by managing the throttle. So if you approach FAF at 250 when your approach speed is is 100 the auto pilot wont be able to start a descent that easily.

Also it depends what kind of approach you want to fly. Some types of rnav gps approaches have vertical guidance (like LPV) and some don’t (LNAV). So if you’re flying LNAV, its up to you to manage the descent rate.

Small mod note- I moved this from #gd-interests:general-discussion to this area of the forum and removed the 30 day aitoclose timer.

Adding to what @OMICO4146 and @Yev757 said, basically, you cannot use VNAV to descend down the glide slope (ILS approach) or glide path (LPV approach). VNAV stops at the FAF. To descend down the glideslope, you need to be in approach mode (APR) for the flight director/autopilot.

Not exactly sure if this answers your question, but this is something that I didn’t fully realize for a while, and was very confused about.
