Rolling cache on…yes here at 16gig. Was at 64 but too much.
I keep mine on, but I clear it after every update.
I did a fresh install on this machine and was running PG last night after 10, and turned on the RC, it now seems to work diff for me this install. Weird PG still looked like hell, but the burst of data stream while the cache updated became just a steady stream.
So now I am wondering, is there also an issue with the caching that could be causing this…
Same here, always on, 250gb
Now you can all be sure that the next time I enter - as a passenger - a real airliner I will totally ask the pilot: “Now, Sir, do you have the rolling cache enabled or not?!”
I dont know I think Id be more worried about which patch their running.
Unfortunattely Manual Cache is still broken. You can’t define the are for download, the trid is moving independetly from the map area below.
I keep mine on with 32G cache and I tend to delete and re-create it after updates are released to avoid bad data.
My rolling cache was set at 32GB, when I checked it it was 35GB that’s not rolling. By the way off topic slightly full high def ultra manual cache has to be faster if using a fast ssd than most if not all internet and is not hard on ssd or using bandwidth. It is expensive but I will buy 2TB m2 ssd and test it, maybe.
I’m unable to use manual cache due to the selected areas horrible shifting around when moving the map.
OK thanks for the info.
Let us know. I’m also a fan of a manual cache as I fly in the same 2 areas all the time.
Reminds me of ortho in x plane. Simple and worked well !
Does anyone know how much disc space the whole of manual cache uses?
I did about a 10x15 mi rectangle, high quality, of Cleveland Ohio lakefront and it came in around 875 megs.
You can make the cache low mid or high. I would guess that if you choose lesser definition, the usage will be smaller.
I turned off rolling cache and manual cache and the PG ended up being a little bit better here.
i7 1080ti 16 gigs and a 100mbps internet connection. You milage may vary.
· Mainboard – Gigabyte Z390 D
· Memory – 32 Gig PC-2666 DDR4 RAM
· Hard Drive – 1 TB SSD
· Hard Drive – 4000 Gig 7200rpm
· DVD Mulit Drive – LG DVD-RW
· Graphics – 8 GiG GeForce RTX 2070 Super
Thanks for the reply I am just testing how much I would need to do the whole lot, I have allowed 1TB of a HDD and it has downloaded 650GB so far. You have to give an allowance to start with and I am wondering if it will just fill the full amount. So far I am 2.5 hours and waiting. I don’t intend to use the HDD but transfer it to SSD so I need to know what size.
With the manual cache (wow 650 gigs did you cache 1/2 the world) say you cache a region, and it only takes 1/2 of the cache size, you can add to that cache with other areas, until the cache is full, or at least that was the way its been explained to me.
Finally finished 975 GB for the whole world or maybe just filling up what I allocated?
If you have at least 50mbps unlimited internet connection you do not need to use it, I have 250mbps and I see no advantage in using it, on the contrary it gives me poor performance (micro stutter)
Interesting video on Youlube where a guy yesterday posted a run down the Thames, and the US airport mentioned in the recent patch.
He did a before and after the patch together with and without using a manual cache.
So, he essentially looked at 4 permutations, which had he repeated it numerous times could have been subjected to an “ANOVA” for you math and scientific people to test whether the differences were statistically significant …
Anyhow, on his simpler, one run test, he found a significant improvement after the update, but the increased advantage of using the manual cache, was NOT seen over London with PG scenery.
In the standard, non PG region, the use of the maual cache did not increase his FPS per se, but it eliminated the few stutters he had.
So. My take from that is it clearly depends on a multitude off factors, which is born out in his thread.
A cache may well benefit some, on some systems, but may well still depend on your settings AND where you’re flying.
Conclusion ? Who knows ?!
I give up.
Does Asobo have any recommendations on rolling vs manual vs no cache? I understand not having a big manual (documentation) for the sim, but they could give some guidance on the core of the system. Just seems like various theories and youtube comparisons.
I have rolling cache on, but just set to 24GB on an m.2 drive. I did have it quite large but that seemed to cause other issues. I’m not sure how much it’s used over my Internet which is 200mps. It doesn’t seem like much but I can’t tell, and don’t have the patience to compare.
Be interesting in the dev mode or console you could somehow see your cache hit ratio.
