ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Rolling Cache Cannot Be Changed or Saved in MSFS 2024

After a recent update, MSFS 2024 started stuttering after ~20 minutes of flight. Upon investigation, I found that the Rolling Cache location was still pointing to an old MSFS 2020 directory (which doesn’t exist on this PC) and was stuck at 0.0 GB. Attempts to change the cache folder to a new location (e.g., C:\rolling cache) result in an “Invalid rolling cache size” error, even when using valid numeric values (e.g., 8.0, 16.0 GB). After saving, the cache folder reverts to the old MSFS 2020 path, and the size resets to 0.0 GB. I have tried full reinstalls (removing MSFS 2020, using Revo Uninstaller), changing permissions, deleting potential cache locations, and checking for hidden registry entries—none have resolved the issue. The game does not appear to properly save Rolling Cache changes, preventing its use entirely.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

No

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

Every flight as there is no rolling cache

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Rolling cache is 0.0 using a path that does not exist on this pc,
  2. I click path option on the field and choose say C:\rolling cache folder i created and allows me to select the folder and gives me an an error “invalid rolling cache size” with a message that says selected size for the rolling cache is not a numeric value, I can click through the errors and end up with rolling cache reflecting the value i chose and C:\rolling cache will appear as the folder. I will save and then comer to verify and it returns to a cache limit of 0.0 and the path that does not exist

• Yes, repeatable, no method found to bypass this issue, so no cache. Cache works okay with MSFS2020.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• I can duplicate the problem. My local rolling cache was “D:\Flight Sim\Cache MSFS2024” but the Rolling Cache Limit would always be zero. I set it to 200GB (also tried 200.00 because MSFS does many non-standard things) and it puts up a notification child window saying “Please Wait Updating the Rolling Cache… 100.00%” but that notification never goes away (waited 30 minutes). Must use Steam to stop MSFS2024. Repeatable. I tried a 1980’s style path without spaces (“D:\FlightSim\Cache_MSFS2024”) but after saving and checking Settings immediately afterwards, the previous path [with spaces] is still there.
If not resolved, I may search in AppData for this setting and manually change it in the file (after backup), then restart MSFS and check.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Turning off Developer Mode allowed me to change my Rolling Cache options.

Same problem here. No solution, so far. I hope SU3 will fix it.

No change. SU3 keeps the bug.

I have even unistalled MSFS 2024 and reinstalled it. Same thing. 0.0 GB cache.

Basically, we cannot set a rolling cache in a game that works exclusively online.
Such a shame.

I wonder why the bug has been given no attention at all.

I am attaching a video to show the problem.

When entering the rolling cache size, instead of typing 15.0, type 16 and press Enter

I have tried it already. No change. :frowning:

A bit dangerous maybe but if you are despirate you might try to hack it:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_wwwwwwwwwwww

in there Subfolder: LocalState

in there file: localprofile

which is a small binary file but contains the Rolling Cache path

and again in Microsoft.Limitless_wwwwwwwwwwww

is a Subfolder: LocalCache

in there I have found a left over 16GByte Rolling cache file from last year (hu why didn’t fs2024 delete it !?):

ROLLINGCACHE.CCC

so you could check if you have such or create a dummy 16Gbyte .ccc file and copy this over to the location it wants to have it by default to get out of this trap and then change to your new location

yes, this is exactly it

Thank you, but inside the Local Cache there is only a “Package” folder, empty.

■■■■…. this problem seems not to be at all on Asobo’s radar and it’s causing me a real pain.

An online game with no cache is just a paradox. It’s so slow each time, loading the same scenery and plane over and over.

Please help!

Any change on your side?

I can replicate the bug very easily.

  1. open settings

  2. select ONLINE

  3. scroll to the rolling cache settings.

  4. Change the size from 0.0 to any value

  5. change the cache folder with any location, even on different SSDs (internal or external). You can change the location first and then the size, it wouldn’t make any difference. But you have to change both as the path is considered invalid if you only change the size.

  6. hit enter to create the cache file (no sign of file creation, which used to take a bit even with an SSD)

  7. click save and back to go back to the menu and save the settings

  8. repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 and watch the default settings coming back magically.

Are we the only one with this problem? I already uninstalled and installed MSFS twice, verified the data with Steam…. I’m hoping SU4 will fix it, but it doesn’t appear in the flashcards.

But you do have 16GByte free on your C: drive?

I believe i have read somewhere that fs2024 will try to auto create that 16GByte file on start up but it can only do that if you still have 16 GByte free on your c drive.

I have 1.18 TB free

I FIXED IT!!!

Here’s the solution for those who don’t have any ROLLINGCACHE.ccc file.

Start the Sim in SAFE MODE

Online settings will work and will create the .ccc file. Set the preferred directory and size (and delete any previous if you changed the dir after creating the file) and it will hold when you start in normal mode!!

Let me know!

@

This bug still exists.

I change the path and size, hit save, and the settings do not change or save.

And it defaults to 0.0GB and complains its not a valid numerical value.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times since I last change the cache settings.

It’s fine to say restart in safe mode, if you haven’t already spent an hour planning and setting up your flight. But I will try that next time.

Edit: I found another workaround - you have to manually create a blank rollingcache.ccc file in the folder it wants. Then it starts to work again. I was able to change the size. But I haven’t tried to change location.

Seems like maybe there is an issue with the code or script that is supposed to create the rollingcache.ccc file.
