So this may have already been hashed out to death, but this is the first time I’ve come across this, and thought I would share my experience. I purchased a new GPU and power supply for my flight sim rig.
GPU=ROG Strix 3080Ti
Power supply= EVGA supernova 1000 G6
My old power supply was an EVGA supernova 750GT. It was probably powerful enough to run the card, but I don’t want to take any chances with stability since the flight sim can push this card pretty hard. Little to my knowledge, EVGA in their infinite wisdom combined two of the cables into one connector on the 8 pin via cables. That means one side must go into the power supply, and the other into the graphics card, otherwise it won’t work.
It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but after swapping ends, and putting the end with 7 pins into the power supply, everything is fine now.
Check your cables if you change power supplies.
I fried a couple of hard drives back in the day swapping EVGA power supplies… but not the cables. Pinouts on the accessory end are the same… but not on the PSU (same model just higher watts) Why… just… why? Also no mention of it anywhere in the box or instructions. There is not even a need to change the pin out locations so seriously… why EVGA… WHY? Yes, I’m still angry years later. Lost literally 1000’s of hours of school work.
You should be angry with yourself first for not checking before not using the supplied cables as PC hardware manufacturers have always tended to use connectors in a seemingly random fashion. Although I’ve never seen this particular Evga problem before I have seen 5v and 3v connectors reversed in cheapo PSUs. Moreso I’ve seen problems when folk don’t use the suppled USB cables for external drives and cellphone chargers.
