Is this after WU? Im running on a 3070 and i9 10900k at 1440p, developer mode shows Iām limited by main thread and GPU utilisation is 50-60% lowering my FPS with many stuttersā¦ only way to boost the GPU utilisation to 100% is by pushing the sim to 4k resolution.
It was not this way before WU.

im running the sim on 49" ultrawide and dont think its 4k, not very savvy with tech.

Can you quantify what type of flying you are doing? I mean lets say for example you are flying VFR over UK for example. Scenery would be being loaded / unloaded all the time and GPU utilisation would be medium->high.
If you are flying high altitude IFR over oceans then conceivably 1-2hrs out from land over the ocean thre wouldnāt be much scenery being loaded in or processed.
There also is a known bug for some involving the end of hrās long flights where their frame rates of seemingly high end GPUs drop to single digits on approach before landing at their destination. Framerates recover as soon as they touch down. Iām not sure that that is what you are reporting though.
Also, what is your GPU utilisation on the ground/runway stationary at Heathrow EGLL or other scenery dense airport say?
it doesnāt matter were or how high or low i am it just drops and gets very laggy with or without any scenery add ons. always happens, in task manager Iām getting about 7mbps download speeds and temperatures are good all round.
What is your CPU load looking like? Have you tried switching to dev mode FPS counter to see whether your CPU is overloading whilst your card is underworked. Itās important to balance CPU/GPU usage and keep the GPU busy. Hence my question on what itās doing when stationary at EGLL.
As it stands right now the 3090 is too much GPU for this sim.
It sounds completely counter-intuitive but the reasoning is that there isnāt a CPU out there that comes anywhere close to matching it for performance so you donāt end up with a balanced system. As a result, with the sim as it is at the moment, you will always be mainthread limited. Iām getting the same problem with a 5900x and a 2080ti. No matter what I do for 90% of the time itās the mainthread slowing things down. If I stuck a 3090 in my machine it wouldnāt really make a jot of difference.
Whatever you try, resolution, bumping the graphics up, pushing the TerrainLOD to 400 etc, they all put extra load on the already maxed out CPU. That thing is working itās nuts off whilst the GPU is sat with itās feet up and a metaphorical beer on the go.
We can hope that DX12 opens the taps to un-used CPU performance which allows these high-end cards to stretch their legs a bit but for the time being, thatās probably going to be the best youāll get.
All as I understand it of course
just setting up at egll now
The most frequent mistakes relating to FS with CPUās and higher end GPUās relate to putting all sliders on max without realising what they impact, and that doing so can end up loading the CPU to max out (mainthread limited) often leaving the GPU ātwiddling itās thumbsā waiting for data to arrive.
Try reducing LODās a bit (terrain and object) down a bit (to lower the CPU load) would be my first step. The 3090 should comfortably run at 4K output (assuming you have a 4K display). If you are running at a lower res (again not using GPU enough) then consider a higher res display or if not then upping your render scale (in FS) say to 125% to keep GPU busier.
Itās really all about balancing CPU load v GPU load. If you become CPU limited then the GPU can often just sit there idle whilst you observe āstuttersā.

took a screenshot at egll, Iām
not too computer savvy so not sure about readings
Itās very hard to see those pics as they are very low resolution. The FPS counter is indicating low FPS on your current settings. There should be text at the foot of that top red area that says you are currently CPU limited or something like that.
The task manager is useless for pref issues as it may be averaging the CPU load measurment over multiple cores. What you usually find is that it is on core/mainthread that is limited and the FPS counter at the foot of that top red FPS counter should let you know what is limited. Iām guessing it will say mainthread limited or something like that.
Certainly Iād be expecting more FPS even at EGLL than 6 or 16 for that matter.
Also would be good to know your GPU temp from the perf meter (It should be <70C), but would be useful to rule out it as an issue. eg if you had a bad heatsink connection on the 3090 for example the GPU could theoretically thermally throttle back quite a bit to manage the temp. I just can read the temp from your screengrabs.
says limited by main thread pcd3d11
main thread 40.0ms
perf temp for gpu is around 70
too much gpu!
For single monitors, thatās probably true. but for VR where iām pushing 3000x3000px per eye, iām always at gpu 99% and looking forward to the 4090.

Well yeah, VR is a different kettle of fish.
To be fair, most people are playing in 2D though and in that medium the 3090 is total overkill at the moment.
So now you need to lower your CPU usage try lowering LODās in sim Terrain LOD to 100 say and Object LOD to 100 and see what happens to GPU usage in counter. The LOD sliders are big drivers of CPU, you need to get that CPU utilisation down from being limited. If GPU is still not worked and (Iām assuming you have most other sliders on high or ultra) which may be ok for your GPU, then try upping the render scale to get GPU busier instead of having it idle and waiting on the CPU to deliver data all the time.
Is the game actually using your GPU or has it reverted to internal graphics?
Even at Ultra and LOD 400 you should be getting more than 6fps.
I was wondering that too. 16 or 6FPS is REALLY low. Hence the thermal limiting question.
