RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 for VR with a Quest 2?

I have currently a RTX 2080 Super and I am using it for two years now for VR with my Quest 2 headset. So far, so bad… at least according to the framerates, which are somehwere between 25 - 35 depending on the scenery and with a lot of optimizations. I’ve recently upgraded my processor to a AMD 5800x3d which already improved the smoothness a bit.

However, I am now thinking about upgrading the graphics card to a 4080 or 4090. Does anybody now if the 4090 would be worth the money, when it’s mainly used for the Flight Sim? Is there a noticeable performance difference between the 4080 and 4090 when used with the Flight Sim, especially considering the fact, that the Sim is very CPU-bound anyway?

Many thanks in advance for your answers!

if you can afford it go for the 4090. i believe the price/performance ratio is higher with the 4090 than with the 4080. but either 1 will be a major upgrade for you.

I upgraded my 5800X3D system from a 3080 to a 4080 yesterday and am very impressed with the outcome. With my Reverb G2, I can now run at 100% OXR and high graphics settings and DX12 and TAA and get 35+ FPS pretty much everywhere. When I am getting the lower end of FPS, I am mainthread limited, so having a 4090 would do little to nothing to improve my worst case performance, hence I am really happy with my choice of the 4080.

A lot of good presents to ourselves it seems.
I also upgraded from a 5600x to a 5800XD and from a 2080TI to a 4090, installed that yesterday. My headset is an Aero, I am totally blown away by the difference.
I’m running everything in the sim on ultra, I’ve my headset at 39ppd. I’ve not flown through London, Paris etc, More knocking about Scotland, EGPH to Oban this afternoon, the level of detail is mindblowing.
I’d go 4090 if you could and maybe you have a bit of future proofing if you decide to change headset at any point.
