RTX 5080 test request, help request

Hello!

I would like to ask for help. I use helicopters in the MSFS 2024 simulator, flying at low altitudes.
I like the amazing visuals, so my settings are set to 4K, ultra. TLOD 200, OLOD 200, dlss quality.
On my current PC I can’t enjoy the 4K, ULTRA settings, because it stutters unplayably at 20-34 FPS, the simulator flying at low altitudes.

I currently have the following PC:

  • Asus Prime Z690-P D4
  • Intel Core i7-12700K 3.6GHz (s1700)
  • Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 CPU
  • EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA
  • Corsair 32GB /3600 Vengeance RGB PRO Black DDR4 RAM KIT (2x16GB)
  • Samsung 1TB 980 Pro M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
  • Seasonic 850W Focus GX 80+ Gold

I would like to build a new computer with the following components:

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
RTX5080
64RAM

I would like to ask anyone who has a 5080 video card or a Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor to please fly low over LONDON and test TLOD200, OLOD 200, 4K, ULTRA settings, dlss quality, FG OFF

I would like to know how smooth the game is, how many FPS can be achieved. Many thanks to everyone who can help!

Have you considered running high settings instead?

I can’t tell from the video, does it say you are CPU or GPU bound?

@skypilotYTS Zoom in on the video, set it to 4K and you can see the details.

I’m curious to see what kind of results can be achieved with a gaming processor and an RTX5080 card.

Not exactly the setup you intend, but this 5 minute test was flying over NYC @ 1500 AGL in the Bonanza G36 Improvement Project.
Very smooth, no stutters.

  • 7950X3D (flightsimulator2024.exe running on 8 vCores only. Everything else on the non-vCores.) Pretty close to 9800X3D performance.
  • 3090 Ti (about 75% of the 5080’s performance.)
  • 64GB DDR5-6400/CL32

4K monitor
LOD 200/200
Ultra Preset
DLSS 4 Quality
Clear weather preset
AI traffic on
PG on
No Frame Gen (since the GPU doesn’t support it.)

I currently have 9800x3D and 5080 with 64GB ram and love it.

But you will need FG if you want to use Ultra settings…

@KevinSull Thank you. It’s disappointing that with a high-end processor and video card, proper performance can only be achieved by frame generation. With top-end hardware, MSFS should easily reach 60 FPS in all conditions with 4K ultra settings in my opinion. There is no problem with performance at high altitudes, but it drops off near the ground.

I’m seriously considering spending $3,000 on a PC that I can’t run MSFS 2024 normally with because the developer can’t optimize it.

It’s pretty disconcerting that my CPU only uses 15% of its processing power during flight, and my 24GB VRAM isn’t being mostly filled during flight. I seldom see more than 12GB being used. DX12 is not well done yet. I hope they prioritize DX12 memory management. It’s much more difficult than DX11, and requires very specific programming expertise.

I also think the Rolling Cache needs much better optimization, and we need to be able to download assets like aircraft and objects along our flight path: The former is coming with SU2, and the latter requires much better use of predictive AI.

I’m also quite dismayed at the poor base LOD in the core sim. Even with a smooth 50fps flight over NYC @ 1500 feet I was seeing ‘object popping’ as I overflew the outlying areas and the city. I have a 1Gb fiber connection, and with the processing power my system has, I can’t understand why the TLOD isn’t 100% perfect.

I know right. It’s the only title I stil struggle with a bit. without FG in EGLL London you can see about 35/30 frames…

@BegottenPoet228 I agree.

@KevinSull Thanks for looking. Terrible result with a high-end PC. I almost get this result with the PC I built 3 years ago. I don’t think I’ll spend $3000 on a new PC. Disastrous performance, terrible optimization.

Given that, I just plug and play, I haven’t done much changing as I couldnt be bothered going into that rabit hole, with a bit of tweeking I presume you could get better performance.

But agreed, it should just work as plug and play

How much does enabling Frame Generation improve the situation? Can Frame Generation help achieve smooth, stutter-free running? What is your experience?

Plug-and-Play performance with this sim on a PC platform is a myth.
Sorry, but that’s the truth.

Some folks might be able to achieve acceptable results without doing some work to research and configure (i.e. “tweak”) their high-performance systems.
But IMO in those cases it’s just a fortunate coincidence.

RTX 5080 is not top-tier hardware and unfortunately, isn’t really suited for playing in Ultra settings at 4K.

I fully agree but I don’t have the time or patience to change endless amount of setting for 5 FPS if even.

I simply plug and play and the performance for me is acceptable and playable.

I’ve certainly accused myself (and rightfully so) of spending too much time tweaking my system. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

And considering that I’m GPU-limited @ 4K it seems on the outset that getting the most performance out of my CPU is a fool’s errand. But I believe in synergy, and by using Process Lasso to assign the sim to the vCores, and everything else to the non-vCores, I was able to see a 20% increase in FPS @ 1080p, and a 7% increase @ 4K. I don’t fly in 1080p, but that’s got to count for something in the big picture.

Ultimately, though, if you are happy with plug-and-play, then more power to you. I know that I never experience the suttering, CTD’s, lag, and low FPS that seem to plague others. Perhaps it’s confirmation bias, but I firmly believe the work I’ve done to tune my system has been beneficial.

Happy :airplane:

@TenPatrol The RTX 5080 card should be enough for 4K, ULTRA settings. That’s not a question. The problem is that the game is poorly optimized. You’re right that it’s not enough for MSFS2024, but that’s the developer’s fault, who optimizes poorly.

I disagree. RTX 4090 barely manages Ultra settings in MSFS 2020 and it’s a better card than RTX 5080. So, once again - RTX 5080 is not top-tier hardware - it’s a mid-range card good for 2K.

I agree that MSFS 2024 is currently not in a state to truly enjoy virtual flying due to numerous bugs and optimization issues.

If Microsoft took the current High preset, renamed it to Ultra and deleted the current Ultra one, would you be happier?

I personally think it’s great that we have settings that are not feasible to use on current hardware, as it means when the next gen hardware arrives we will have something to really test it with.

Be excited for the future, not unhappy with the present. :slightly_smiling_face:

I really do need to sit down and review it only issue is I’m completely clueless with it comes to this stuff.
