Newbie here and have so far struggled to find a search solution that matched this problem using MSFS 2024. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
**Note I have flown MSFS only in Training sessions so far **
Problem: Excessive, continuous GPU temps of 80-83 deg C. GPU use rapidly rises to 80-90% as soon as I press “Start” ( after loading of MSFS activity packages etc). GPU temps and utilisation stay at this level, even when not flying, eg on static screens like the initial Training screen.
I’m concerned these temps will ultimately diminish the life of the GPU.
Gear: Dell XPS8950 Windows 11 i7-12700k 64GB RAM. RTX3070 (8 GB) Monitor Dell 27" UHD. Internet speeds 50-120MB/sec.
I understand in MSFS terms this would be regarded as a “mid level” setup, possibly capable of 2560 x 1440 resolution at reasonable frame rates, but certainly capable of good results at 1920 x 1080.
Notes: the actual game appearance in the training screens looks fine - no glitches, and controls are reasonably responsive. Loading times are reasonable and there have been no game crashes so far.
CPU utilisation is 30%-50% and CPU temps ( water cooled) are good.
RAM utilisation is <30GB.
Following “remedies” ( including combinations of these ) have been tried and failed to reduce GPU temps at all:
uninstalling and reinstalling MSFS 2024
removing side of PC case and cooling with an external fan.
adjusting fan rpm to 90% above 70 deg C
dropping MSFS resolution from 2560 x 1440 to 1920 x 1080
dropping all the major SMSF graphics settings to Medium ( from High or Ultra) .
Dropping TLD and OLD to 75 (from 150)
Dropping frame rate from 60 to 30 fps
I’m not keen to invest in a more substantial GPU, and would like to avoid major mods to my PC, which supposedly already exceeds Microsoft’s “Recommended” spec for this game. I would simply like to run MSFS at a reasonable resolution and FPS without running my GPU into the ground.
The gpu & cpu temps and utilization you mentioned are perfectly normal. Given the fact that you indicated the sim looks great and runs well I wouldn’t change a thing.
The sim is extremely hard on any PC hardware so no worries!
The “sim” seriously lacks proper optimization, specially when DX12 is used. The MAJOR problem is that there aren’t capable coders, the code won’t be as efficient as it should.
It’s baffling. Not meaning to roast, but are there no seniors coders at Asobo that “understand” how to code
Do you have access to and understanding of the source code in order to pass that judgment as fact?
The things this sim does graphically are arguably unmatched by anything else out there.
I have the same unit and it runs hot now. Much worse performance and worse graphics than 2020. I have tried to get it to work right for a month and I am giving up. I looked side by side with 2020 today and the images are blurry… especially the cockpit lettering… look to the VRAM Bug thread… better FPS in 2020 and it looks better for me…
Hi Nick
I have similar problems with most games on my PC, even in the menus some of the games were trying to achieve 120 FPS etc, same with the Sim.
The only way I found to counter-act the problem was to limit the Maximum FPS of the PC basically the GPU.
when you say * Dropping frame rate from 60 to 30 fps where did you limit that?
I would go into the Nvidia control panel / under global settings / Max frame Rate, I set that at around 45 FPS so the PC or GPU never tried to go into overdrive in the menus of the Sim and it remained perfectly stable ( you can raise the FPS to suit)
Also when I had a 3700X CPU fitted it came with the stock cooler and it was useless in the flight sim, the CPU would immediately go into 80°c - 90°c mode with in secs.
I exchanged it for the Fuma 2 and the problem disappeared.
You don’t have to have access to the code or understand it to realise that the “sim” is still not optimised, took over all the issues from 2020 and added more with their cloud garbage policy. Suck criticism up. That’s the only way that things become better. Your argumentation method is a path to mediocrity.
Call it what the “sim” is. An arcade simulation game, solely catering to xbox pilots. It is mind-blowing to me that they took everything that was bad about 2020 and kept it in 2024, including the lack of optimisation. And then they have the nerves to turn it into cloud based garbage, so we all can really enjoy it.
Since you are obviously an expert in the field of optimising graphics code, why don’t you simply explain to Asobo what they should do specifically to optimise the game better?
Even without knowing the code, you will surely be able to tell them where to start and in which areas of the graphics pipeline there is the greatest potential for optimisation.
The competition is improving, and considering what they’ve done with xplane with 1/10 the resouces, and how much better it runs than fs20 (never mind fs24) on lower-end hardware, it’s obvious that asobo’s code is unoptimized in comparison.
And fs24 is full of major bugs. No time to optimize when you’ve got a major failure on your hands.
Xplane is working on their own marketplace, which should bring a bunch of 3rd party devs who have been burned this holiday sales season by the closure of the fs24 marketplace incentive to check them out.
Navigate to Graphics Settings.
Look for the V-Sync option and enable it. Then, find the Frame Rate Limit setting and set it to 50%. After making these changes, save your settings.
80 degree Celcius for GPU mounted in PC is rather high but not necessarily “dangerous”. In the long run, it does affect lifespan. If it is a laptop GPU, that’s “normal”.
The laptop GPU temp in MSFS 2020 and 2024 is rather similar. It sits between 73-80, mostly in 75-78 most of the time. It is in the safe range. RTX 3050 for example, it is designed to reach 90-92 C, and it will throttle back when breaching maximum heat curve.
Increase your fan speed and renew the thermal paste. Probably lower your fps, cap it, and use Lossless Scaling to double/triple it.
Hi and thanks for your detailed reply!
I had adjusted the frame rate in the SIM down to 30fps via the Settings menu > Dynamic Settings > Frame Rate Target. Following your suggestion I also adjusted the max frame rate vis Nvidia Control Panel to 45 fps.
Unfortunately no change to RTX temps. I’m coming round to the view that I may have to live with these temps unless I am prepared to make major mods to the PC.
