My AMD Rx7900xtx died after just 5 months. Started with no image after hot restart couple weeks ago. Needing a full power Cycle. Last week it just refused to show an image, permanently. Extensive testing with Lumo.ai and Chatgpt. No stone unturned, everything installed afresh, different monitors and cables. Returned to vendor for testing, received a full refund today. Payed 900 euros for the 7900xtx and the 24gb VRAM was very nice to have.
Went for an MSI 5080 3OC for 300 euros more. Will take a week to get delivered.
Will I miss my 7900xtx or will the 5080 be ok? Only having 16gb of VRAM.
Paired with 9950x3d. And Quest 3 VD.
Full specs in signature.
If you’re playing at 4K with maxed-out settings and no compromises, the 5080’s 16GB of VRAM will definitely cause a hit to performance especially when flying complex airliners or at dense airports.
I know this firsthand because I actually use a 5080 myself. When it comes to MSFS 2024, VRAM is king. Period.
I’ve been debating upgrading my 3090 Ti, but don’t want to give up its 24GB VRAM.
The 7900XTX is an option, but it seems like a rather lateral move.
I can’t afford a 5090.
I sold my old rtx3090 PC to a friend (at friend price) and he is still happily using it with msfs2020/2024 with a Q3. I now have 2x PC’s, one with rtx4090 and the other with rtx5090. If I were you, I’d stick with your 3090ti until you can at least afford a 4090. If you win a lottery, go for a 5090, lol! Cheers.
Yes, he’ll be fine if he limits textures and resolution. Since he has a high end cpu and already has 24Gb Vram, I don’t think he wants to do this. I have a simlar high end 9800x3d cpu with rtx5090 and often see +20GB Vram usage on games like half life alyx with ultra settings. You can never have too much Vram these days imho.
With the Rx7900xtx I sometimes did hit 22-23 gb VRAM. VD ultra settings, 72fps, SWW enabled, in msfs2024 TAA and mostly medium to high settings, Quest 3. Kodiak and Fenix.
What are your in game settings with your 5080?
I would have preferred continueing with the Rx7900xtx but it is sold out where live, on the other hand I hope dlss 5 will be sharp enough to replace TAA.
I ordered the 5080 because i got a good deal (still overpriced though) and free return shipping, so not stuck with the 5080. MSI GeForce RTX 5080 VENTUS 3X OC - 16GB GDDR7 RAM -
Not an overclocker but stability is number one for me. As said 4k pancake and Quest 3 VR with VD.
The only real alternative would have been the 9700xt i guess but my hope is that nvidea dlss will give better performance than TAA without loss of glass cockpit readability.
PSU
EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 PQ 1000 W 80+ Platinum Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply
If money isn’t a concern, I’d consider getting a newer PSU that is natively compatible with NVIDIA’s current GPU power connector (12V-2x6 / 12VHPWR). The EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 PQ is a good unit, but it’s an older PSU (2019) and would rely on adapters for that GPU.
As for DLSS, the Quality “M” model already looks good enough that if I didn’t have a 5090, I’d probably just run DLSS Quality model M (4K) most of the time.
The msi card came with its own adapter for connection with 3 male-male 6+2 PCIe cables. Couple of days until delivery, will report back when installed. With the rx 7900xtx TAA was the only way to get crisp glass cockpit visuals so praying preset M will be in the same ballpark. I chose the AMD rx 7900xtx specifically for the 24gb vram and the fact that I avoided the Nvidea bloated pricing. It was a lovely card until it died. Would buy again, although the drivers gave me challenges because not all new drivers were stable for VR. Especially when switching between pancake and VR. Could stretch financially prostituting the dog and sell my wife to get an 5090, but at 4000 euros for a 5090, i would rather take up nitting for a couple of years, until prices normalize.
EDIT: sell the dog and prostitute the wife.
Yes, I know the MSI card came with its own adapter. However, I think it’s better to power the GPU using the PSU’s native PCIe 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 cable rather than using an adapter connected to an older PSU that may already be 6 years old. Using the dedicated cable from a modern PSU is generally safer and more reliable.
I have a RTX 5080 and almost always fly in VR. Pimax Crystal Super. I’ll be honest and say that it can struggle at times.
Flying GA in the Kodiak, Baron and the like it seems to handle things reasonably well (flying GA I tend to fly from smaller airports).
Flying the heavy metal tends to be a different story. The Fenix, Ini A340 from medium size airports and I’m usualy ok ish. However the Ini A350 especially at the larger airports and I’m really struggling for frames.
Let’s face it I have a high end GPU and a decent CPU (9800x3d) and it’s a battle to fly in VR with a high end headset.
I can’t do any more. A 5090 is way too much for my budget and the electricity power grid would probably struggle as well. If the 5080 super with its 24 GB vram decides to be released anytime soon I might do a trade depending on reviews.
edit: Just to add if I use my Quest 3 headset the results are very much more acceptable using VD (obviously fewer pixels).
I didn’t realise the 50 super series had probably been cancelled completely. This article makes pretty depressing reading.
I guess we’ll all have to hope Nvidia can work a bit more driver magic. Preset M is a definite performance boost for me. What we need is a preset M plus plus plus plus or something.
