Don’t know if anybody else saw this news item yesterday, but in the late 1800s Richard and Catherine Dotson passed away and were buried in the family graveyard. Decades later, Savannah built an airport, and decades after that, expanded said airport. The expansion overran the Dotson cemetery and after an agreement was reached, almost all those interred there were relocated to a nearby site. With the exception of the family patriarch and matriarch, Richard and Catherine. From the East end of RWY 10, about 1 mile west on the northern apron, you can spot (in Google Maps) two markers, where they were buried 200 years ago. They’d be stunned if they could see what goes on around them now…
Would be great if a scenery designer could custom build the runway texture at KSAV to put the markers there–and the couple on the grass nearby.
Agreed. The other two in the grass are Daniel Hueston and John Dotson, left interred for unknown reasons. Wonder if flights on that runway ever call attention to that bit of trivia…
1.04 miles from the east end of RWY 10
The headstones of both Dotson’s are clearly visible on the edge of the runway, and are easily readable if you get up close to them. The three additional graves are in the grass beside them. In the (assuming Google Earth?) image above, you can see two of them just to the right of the curving tire tracks in the grass. They are much smaller than the Dotson’s markers, and seem to float into and out of visibility over time. In reality, they are small enough that if the grass gets very high they simply are hiding in the grass. There are two more, further away as well that I’m aware of. These seem so appropriate considering that Savannah is considered to be one of the most haunted cities in North America. If you visit there are a lot of ghost tours taking you around to various haunted places. A few of them you actually ride in old hearses.
Knew of the other two in the grass but was unaware of a third? Haunted? Reminiscent of New Orleans, I’ve seen several early cemeteries with witch’s and warlock’s tombs and others dating back to the early 1600s (not to mention Nick Cage’s, who has yet to expire…LOL!). Haunted mansions, etc. One thing for sure, the Dotson site probably doesn’t get a lot of visitors on Memorial Day…
On the contrary, they get a lot of visitors. People are flying by all day long LOL
LOL! I forgot about that. Bet they don’t stop and say hello, though!
