So I thought I would test the capabilities of MSFS2024 in the autogeneration of scenery. In order to do this I did a random flight over Pyongyang, North Korea in MSFS 2020. I then did a similar trip in MSFS 2024.
Why Pyongyang? Because a) it has people and b) there is bugger all data available for the area.
The good, the bad and the ugly
The Good:
2024 defs does a better job with the scenery. In 2020 there were plenty examples of roads that ran into rivers, bridges that went under water and buildings that just looked out of place. In 2024 roads behaved like roads, bridges were intact and buildings looked far more realistic.
The bad:
Crop fields looked flat and lifeless. They defs could have used some texture love and some generated crop cover. The theme of the countryside seemed to be brown. Far too much brown and in need of some color. Now given that I’ve never flown over North Korea personally, I can’t say for sure. But I’m pretty sure there is enough greenery to take away from the overall brown feel.
The ugly:
Nothing that I saw was a deal breaker. As I have said, roads and bridges behaved as they should in 2024. Much better than 2020. I did not fly over all of North Korea but the areas I saw were defs an improvement over MSFS 2020. Msobo have done a good job on the autogeneration of scenery where all they have are satellite images to work off.
That’s my 2 cents worth.
