I’d like to request an enhancement to the MSFS SDK that would allow third-party developers to interact with NAV radio voice audio in addition to the existing Morse code identification functionality.
Today, NAV radios correctly support receiving VOR identifiers in Morse code. However, some real-world aviation procedures involve voice communications over NAV radio facilities (for example, Flight Service communications in areas where that is applicable).
Several modern aviation add-ons are expanding the realism of ATC and radio communications, but they are currently limited by the SDK’s ability to access or inject voice audio through NAV radios. Exposing this capability would enable developers to model additional real-world radio procedures while allowing users to interact with the correct radio equipment rather than relying on workarounds.
Potential capabilities could include:
- Receiving simulated voice audio through the NAV radio audio path.
- Allowing third-party applications to provide voice transmissions over compatible NAV radio facilities.
- Maintaining support for existing Morse code station identification while adding optional voice capabilities.
- Giving developers appropriate SDK interfaces so the feature can be implemented without affecting users who don’t use these add-ons.
This request is not intended to change default simulator behavior. Instead, it would expand the SDK so third-party developers can build more realistic communication systems where appropriate.
As flight simulation continues to evolve, enhanced NAV radio audio support would open the door to more authentic radio procedures and better support for advanced aviation add-ons.
