Seat position and VR Zoom

I like to position myself in the seat manually after centering with the space bar. However, If I use the instrument zoom feature, coming out of it throws me back in the seat too far and I can no longer see instrumentation clearly.

Is there a way to make or save the seat position so it always returns to the correct spot?

Open the Cameras.cfg file for the aircraft you are using. Scroll down to the section for PilotVR and then down a bit further for the x, y and z coordinates. Adjust from there.

Thank you! Is there a way to get the coordinates I want or is it trial and error?

I basically look down at the seat and estimate where I would actually be. I find when I do that I can better see airspeed, etc.

I’m not sure if they are the same order for every aircraft but I have found the second number is up and down, and the 3rd number is forward and backwards. I believe the first number is left and right but not sure about that. That’s just going off memory, I’m not in front of my FS computer right now.

Does it update in real time, so you can easily fine tune?

I’m not either or I’d be trying it now.

No you have to close FS each time you make a change. Which plane are you using?

Mostly the Cessna 172S and 152.

Ouch on the close! is that just a close on the flight or to the desktop? Hopefully the flight as the full sim reload is rather lengthy.

Unfortunately the latter.

Any guess as to how much to increment the numbers when tweaking?

I usually start with values about + or - .2 depending on which way you’re going. That gives you and idea how how much it moves then you can tune from there. Anything above 1 will most likely throw you through the firewall or out the top depending on which direction you are moving.

I’ve been flying the new Cessna 337 exclusively and in VR it was way to far back. I only had to change the value of about .4 I think to move much further forward. First time I jumped to big of increments and ended up on the cowling. That being said I’ve found that a lot of the Aircraft are diffient in what the increments move you so it really is trial and error.

While in a flight, you can use Alt-Up arrow to move your seat position forward and Alt-Down arrow to move back. The position isn’t saved when you exit the flight so editing the camera.cfg is a more permanent solution.

That’s what I was doing, but when I use the VR zoom feature I’m getting kicked way back when I come out of it.

I may try to see if I can map the camera position to a controller button.

Didn’t know it would be such a popular topic!

You can save custom cockpit camera positions using Left Alt + Left Ctrl + 1-9. You can then select the camera position using Left Alt + 1-9 . This also takes care of OP’s issue when using Zoom.

I still have a button mapped from to my HOTAS from 2D that gave me full instrument view. I can give that a try,

The biggest issue with having to fiddle with cameras.cfg is that you need to restart the sim to see your changes, since that’s when that data is loaded. Instead you could use the approach I mentioned and save a custom cockpit view. And these are saved per aircraft.

So for example, once you have tweaked your seated position in the cockpit using arrow keys and alt + arrow keys, you press Left Ctrl + Left Alt + 1, this will save your position to “slot 1” for that plane (under the hood, it is actually saving your tweaked position to a completely different cameras.cfg file that only stores user defined camera positions). Now anytime you fly this plane, if you press Alt + 1, you will snap to your tweaked position and zoom also works flawlessly. You should be able to map “alt + 1” to a different button on your hotas as well. Sadly none of this super well documented I think, so I had to do some digging to find out.

Curious this got some post got some interest. I’m only flying in a Cessna 152 and 172 at the moment. But I feel like the default view assumes I’m 6’9"+ and need a ton of extra leg room. I’m 5’9".

Given VR limits, that makes seeing the instruments a challenge.

When I pull up all the way, recenter and drop down, my hotas stick falls right where I see the flight yolk. That and I can make out the instruments better.
