Seeking Rig Specific Troubleshooting ideas on stuttering and excessive VRAM usage

I know a quite a number of folks have brought up excessive VRAM usage and poor FPS and stuttering at low levels near airports. However, I’m going to be as granular as I can so perhaps people can be more able to help me resolve and/or help me troubleshoot with suggestions.

The Hardware/Rig:

i9-14900KF
MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio (Driver: Game Read Nvidia Driver 572.83)
64 GB of Trident Z5 Ram (32x2)
MSI Z790 Ace Motherboard (Bios 1.50 - not the latest, as I think there has been one update since 1.50 but I declined to update)
Primary Monitor: LG Ultragear 45" OLED Curved WQHD 240HZ (3440x1440)
Secondary Monitor: older generation Samsung LED ultrawide
Tertiary Screen: 1920x80 screen for system monitoring (all three screens are accessed via the RTX 5080)

Performance in non-MSFS Games: Stellar. Handles Monster Hunter Wilds, Civ VII and DCS with ease. In DCS I’m pretty much always at 120+ FPS (on ground or the air). Temps, VRAM usage and CPU/GPU utilization is great and well below suggested limits. Just zero issues and have been very happy with the 14900KF and the RTX 5080 in non MSFS 2024 games. Generally fantastic on high and ultra settings.

Performance in MSFS 2024

  • Poor frame rates at airports, take-off and approach.
  • Generally fine at elevation - 80-120 FPS
  • Some blurriness of cockpit lettering
  • Massive stuttering on taxi
  • Seems to be worse with default Vision Jet. Feel like a tad better with my ported SWS Kodiak 100 and Cows DA-42 (both from MSFS 2020 that I moved to community folder in 2024)
  • VRAM usage seems super high - 95%-99% on the RTX 5080. That doesn’t seem right. Memory leak?
  • Temps are generally solid though cool ambient temperature. CPU and GPU without load in the mid 30c. Regular flying typically 50c-60c. CPU and GPU will occasionally spike to about 70c. Seems a material amount better on temps when compared to my i9-9900 and 2080 ti which consistently hit mid 80s. CPU is watercooled. I hit about 32 Gigs of RAM usage.

Background apps/software

  • usually a few chrome windows up
  • Lordy’s Xs and Ohs.
  • Streamdeck
  • TDS GTNXi
  • Simlink
  • Navigraph hub
  • Nvidia App
  • AIDA 64 (for system monitoring)
  • Steam (MSFS 2024 installed via steam)
  • TrackIR
  • Slack
  • MSI Afterburner (latest one)
  • VirtualFly for hardware control
  • RealSimGear App for hardware control

MSFS 2024 Settings:

Initially everything on High or Ultra. I have since moved everything to High with nominal improvements. Live multi-player traffic and live weather. Disabled AI and real traffic.

HDR10 Enabled
3440x1440 (windowed and non-windowed)
Anti Aliasing: DLSS Super Resolution
DLSS Super resolution: Auto
Frame Generation: Enabled
AMD Sharpening: Zero
V-Sync: Off
Frame Rate Limit: 100% monitor refresh Rate
TLD: 400
Off-Screen Terrain Cache: High
Object Level of Detail: 200
Anisotrophic Filtering: 16x
Shadow Maps and Terrain Shadows: 2048
Dynamic Settings: Enabled. Frame Rate Target: 10 (should I increase?)

What I’ve tried:

  • Disablted TrackIR: nominal improvement
  • Moved all settings to high and removed all ultra settings: nominal improvements

Questions:

Are other people getting excessive VRAM usage based on the plane? What about stuttering at low levels?

Should I adjust the MSFS 2024 graphic settings? If so, what specifically?

How about the Nvidia app? Suggested settings?

Any afterburner issues? All default settings and I’m not OCing (though I’d like to eventually)

Bandwidth issue seems normal. Same for others?

Any other suggestions for improving performance?

Thanks in advance. I know a lot of info but perhaps with the detail I can get better advice on how to resolve the MSFS 2024 problems.

Feel free to request additional information.

Hello @WolverineHusky, thank you for this report. We’ve moved your topic into the User Support Hub > Install, Performance & Graphics.

Have you tried looking at the performance guide at the link below?

Thank you for this. I have not and will review for sure.

Posting results of tests to hopefully help folks out:

  1. I moved all settings to “high” with no Ultra settings.
  2. Flew the 2020 COWS DA-42 (that I moved to 2024 community folder)
  3. Flew from RJFO to RJFU (Japan) at around 7 PM PST time.
  4. Multiplayer live on, no traffic, live weather.
  5. TrackIR enabled and typical background apps (e.g., Simlink, Navigraph Hub)

RESULTS:

Generally, pretty good and way different than the Vision Jet with mix of ultra/high in previous days.

  • Saw about a 75% VRAM usage (in prior weeks was in the high 90%s)

  • No stuttering

  • Saw 30-65 FPW on the ground, takeoff, approach and landing

  • Saw 80-120 FPS at about 6,000 feet. Cloudy conditions.

So not sure if just the plane (as my Vision Jet experience has been bad) or perhaps MSFS fixed some stuff.

Will try again with same plane and different airports. Then I will test Vision Jet which has been causing me a lot of issues.

You could also try adjusting the TLOD, objects LOD and Contact Shadows downwards just a little. As with 2020, even the fastest intel cpu’s struggle with those maxed-out.

Try 350 and 175 instead of 400 and 200 - you probably won’t notice any difference in detail, but it will ease the load on the mainthread and help it run more smoothly.
