To the people that found their settings wiped, a couple of questions:
Have you also found your logbook has been wiped?
At any point when launching the sim did you get a pop up window asking if you want to use cloud data or local data?
My hours are there, dont recall a choice between local and cloud

That’s interesting. There are two copies of your profile, one in the cloud, one on local disk. Sometimes these get out of sync, and when the sim boots it must check for this, which leads to the pop up asking you to make the decision on which is the canonical copy.
I have rarely had this but every time I have chosen local.
What I find difficult to understand are these partial profile wipes. Where some folders within your “wgs” folder have lost information, or they are inaccessible.
If you don’t have backups of the “wgs” folder then recovery may not be possible. But there is a slight hope that maybe you have some “junk” data within your profile that contains your original settings.
When I get to my desk, just having a morning coffee with the cats(!), I’ll show you what I mean.
Everything is gone on my side as well. Days of tweaking, all for nothing. This is infuriating. Absolutely crushing. I spent like 5 times more time and energy on setting up the sim and configuring stuff these past few weeks than actual flying hours, and now this is the reward. It’s just exhausting.
What exactly is missing on your side?
When I launched, I heard music. I switched music off, so thats the first thing I noticed got reset. Then I got a window asking me what accessibility settings I want, then graphics settings, then controls. Everything was default. I have no other choice than to click through, no option to go “from cloud” or load locally, everything was already reset. It did save the controls profiles that I had, but it switched them to default ones.
That’s probably due to the authentication issue they were having. You couldn’t authenticate, and perhaps that starts the process of creating a new profile in the cloud, and perhaps locally too.
But in my mind that would lead to a loss of everything, and again these partial wipes I find odd.
I’ll try to backup my actual settings and see what happens. Do you know the route to that ‘wgs folder’? Thank you

Each of the folders that has a “container.*” file contains one other file. This other file may contain your logbook, or it may contain settings for a controller.
I as hoping that for the users that have lost controller data there may be some orphaned data here that could be copy/pasted over the top of the newly wiped data.
Graphical settings are stored in this file:

What I observed was the folder names are immutable, at least on my system. So the settings for my TQ6+ throttle quadrant are always in this folder:

You will see that above in the folder with “container.155”. But what I also noticed is that although the folder doesn’t change, the files inside it do. It’s like the file itself is repeatedly copied over. Some may rememeber a bug a few months back here one of these sets of files were endlessly being deleted, and re-created, leading to slow down.

i must add that msfs does not shutdown in steam anymore, it stays green as running.
Things like in-game panels have reset. They are now all active and shown in the list, while I previously had most of them hidden. Tooltips on again. Realism settings. Yet it retained my traffic settings (everything off). this will haunt me for the next several days, things will happen that I won’t understand and I’ll have to go back to settings and wonder why is it doing this now , oh right, it’s one of the settings that got reset, BUT WHICH ONE?!
I must confess I don’t know where all of those are set. But confusingly some are not in your user profile. For example, the map screen options are stored here:
D:\Flight Simulator\Official\OneStore\fs-base\worldmap\WorldmapFilters.xml
Substitute “D:\Flight Simulator” for wherever your have your sim installed. Others like this may be external to your user profile also.
Yes, it’s an absolute chaos. This just simply can’t be happening.
Sure it’s just a game, who cares how fast the camera moves, or what panels are active. But that’s not the point. It’s my real time that I have spent on this, my real, valuable free time, and days of it, to set up this program. Look at my profile pic, it’s a complicated setup, so for it to take time is expected. But then for simple stuff such as settings saved in text or xml files to be deleted and have such an impact on what I invested in to this setup is just soul crushing.
I hope the Asobo team can find a way to have all settings files backed up somewhere locally, at one place, maybe even manually by the user, so that if servers go bad, which again, I don’t blame anyone for, catastrophic deletions and resets don’t occur or can at least be mitigated.
We all know how much time it can take to get this admittedly incredible piece of software to run the way we want, so I’m sure I’m not alone in my desperation here, after spending hours in forums to get the setup working like i want it to.
You can already do this right now.
As stated above, simply zip up this folder, for restoration later if something goes wrong.

In the CJ4, all saved settings are also gone. As in what you can set in the PFD/MFS menus, the saved MFS setups in the MEM 1,2 and 3 buttons etc.
Thanks for this. Can this be done after the fact? I.e after loading MSFS and noticing the settings have been reset?
That would be a recovery, not a backup. Other than what I listed above, about looking for a file that contains your old controller profile, I’m not sure what else can be done about a lost profile. But it depends on how much, or rather what, you have lost.
