Given all of the automation and the various assistance setting, I’m wondering if it is possible to set up entirely automatic flights?
The idea would be to set up a scenic flight plan, and just let it go on full cinematic external camera.
Sometimes I feel like a complex technical flight. Sometimes I just want something beautiful in the background. Seems like that might be a way to do that.
I see. Very interesting. I will definitely have to carefully plan my flight routes for this one. Also does not initially seem to manage prop pitch, but that’s easy to fix for the cruise.
Was just trying it. The AI starts the engine at 100% prop RPM and does not adjust it. You do need to manually go in an pull it back to keep the engine from red-lining.
Everything else seems to be AI controlled.
And the AI does seem to attempt to climb over terrain, but most GA planes don’t have enough climb to deal with mountains. Still trying to figure out how to do a nice Japan route without going splat. Maybe a JSDF F-35B?
It does seem to work, at least takeoff and cruise, for 3rd party aircraft in Xbox. I’ve run it on IFE’s F-35 and the Cessna 185. However, the cruise altitude seems to get reset on suspend. Which is a problem when you’re flying past the mountain range that Mt Fuji is part of, and it decides to reset things from 12,500ft down to about 1,200ft…
I’ll have to try an ILS route to see if that avoids lithobraking a bit better, then try it on a somewhat flatter region. Maybe Africa?
ILS and airline routes work on Xbox. VFR seems to work so long at the cruise and decent altitudes are higher than intervening terrain.
It seems to work on all Xbox compatible planes I have tried it on (IndiaFoxTexcho JSF, and the CV-22), but not the PC only planes. MilViz’s Corsair won’t attempt a takeoff, and right now the Flying Iron Hellcat has a really wonky takeoff, and currently attempts to land by pointing it’s nose at the runway. Don’t have the Flying Iron P-38 yet, and the Hellcat hasn’t come to Xbox yet, so will need to test those versions as well.
On Xbox, suspend mode works, but seems to reset the cruise altitude and cruise speed to a much lower altitude and speed. If you’re doing an ILS route, the cruise altitude will go back to the correct altitude for the next leg.
Also, sometimes suspend mode doesn’t work and you lose the flight.
So it does work, but there are anomalies. Still gets some really incredible flights, especially since I don’t know instrument flight myself, and can really only do clear weather flying, while the AI can go right through thunderstorms without breaking a sweat. Really very cool.
