Setting up flight controls is such a chore

I am trying to set up my controls in MSFS 2024, and yes, I agree it is tedious and frustrating and I want to tell Microsoft how I really feel about their product. For some reason now after I have been struggling to set up even one aircraft properly in 2024, when I go back to 2020 again, my Velocity One flight stick has decided that none of the controls there work either. I am very tired of this.

In my earliest posts about MSFS 2020, (pre-2024 era), I mentioned how absolutely cumbersome the configuration process was. X-Plane’s controller setup is a cake-walk by comparison.

It hasn’t changed.

To be perfectly honest, especially in the FS-24 environment, I often do not know what configuration my controllers will be in when I return. Mostly, it’s OK, but sometimes it gets scrambled somehow.

And now, with the current state of FS-24, I am lucky if I can actually get to FLY something.
[pounding head against wall]

True.

I am no shrinking violet either, (Want copies of the latest IBM JCL guides), and I’ve been around the block a few times.

Though the books next to me were on WATFIV FORTRAN and PL/I.

I’ve also dealt with more recent technology.

Bottom line, I’m no wall-flower.

X-Plane: It took a few iterations to get things tweaked the way I like them.
MSFS: It’s an ongoing engineering project, to the point that, after calibrating the joysticks within Windows, I had to modify the calibration settings in the registry itself to get the controllers to center properly. This is absolute nonsense.

What say ye?

As difficult as it is to master SPAD.NeXt, it’s a cakewalk compared to the sim’s own Controls UI.
I feel for console players who are stuck having to use the latter tool.

Agreed. I map almost everything through Spad.neXt and over time I plan to remove pretty much everything other than keyboard mappings from the sim. With the new camera API available in Simconnect, I should probably be able to.

Speaking of calibration tools etc for hardware, everyone should have a copy of DIView. This will let you do stuff that the Windows control panel just won’t.
