Settings that lower just RAM usage (NOT VRAM)?

I have a 5070ti system with 32gb of RAM on a 1440p setup. The simulator RAM usage is around 22gb at cruise, and 25-27gb near ground.

Coupled with a web browser, Discord, LNM and Volanta in the background, it pushes my ram usage to the limit and I’d often crash from RAM exhaustion right before landing. As for VRAM i am completely fine with 16gb though, I never see usage higher than 13-14gb.

What sim settings affect RAM the most, so I can reduce them? I really only care about RAM since VRAM is completely fine on my end.

The browser, discord and Volanta.

my goodness, why didn’t I think of that?:person_facepalming:

Are you really running out of RAM? Or is it maybe a problem of virtual memory? Try to increase your swap file significantly.

But nevertheless a Browser must not be running if the simulator is running. Same lasts for discord.

i have 24gb paged (8gb across 3 drives). i suppose i can raise it to 12gb per drive, though aren’t pagefiles too slow anyways for games?

i dont care too much for graphical fidelity as long as it’s medium at minimum. while the sim is running for hours cruising at FL430 i’d like to be able to do web browsing with my PC. hence asking which specific settings increase just RAM usage.

I would strongly dissuade anybody from making changes to the pagefile, especially for gaming. When pagefiles are in use they have a huge impact on performance. Let Windows manage the pagefile on its own and forget about it.

The best option is not to have any unnecessary apps or services running in the background that are using up valuable memory, especially web broswers. By using the details page in task manager you can see which processes are using the most memory and disable those that are not required.

well, i’ve been wanting to be able to use my PC for web browsing while my plane cruises for like 7 hours… that’s what i’m trying to achieve.

This does not apply in this case. If the crash is caused by insufficient virtual memory, there will be a corresponding entry in the Windows Event Log. It includes a link to a Microsoft page. I would have to look it up again - I’ve already linked it once in this forum.

Long story short: the page explains that Windows’ automatic mode is not able to increase the swap file quickly enough to provide virtual memory, and that you should disable automatic mode and instead configure a fairly large fixed (static) swap file - at least half the size of your RAM, preferably more. For me it solved the problem of CTDs due to low Virtual Memory.

Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any setting that primarily affects RAM usage. On the contrary, most settings mainly influence the CPU, GPU, and VRAM, with RAM only being affected as a kind of “collateral damage.”

What has a much greater impact on RAM usage is the use of add-ons. If you want to reduce your simulator’s RAM requirements, avoid third-party scenery, airports, and aircraft.

Let me repeat: a browser has no place on a simulator PC. It doesn’t just consume RAM, but also uses other resources and significantly interferes with the simulator’s performance. If you don’t want that, your only option is to invest in more RAM.

right now doubling my RAM costs the same amount as my X3D CPU, lol.
