Severe FPS drop and GPU underutilization when opening EFB Route Planner (introduced in SU3)

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

After SU3, when opening the EFB Route Planner, GPU usage suddenly drops from ~90% to ~15–20% and FPS progressively degrades until the simulator becomes unplayable (1–5 FPS).

This behavior did not occur in SU2.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

It happens consistently with base aircraft, clean install, no addons.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Launch MSFS 2024 (SU3).

  2. Spawn at any airport with a default aircraft (Airbus A330-300 RR).

  3. Open the EFB and navigate to Route Planner.

  4. Observe:

    • GPU utilization drops drastically.

    • FPS quickly falls and does not recover, even after closing the EFB.

    • Problem appears only since SU3.

    • No thermal throttling, no traffic enabled, no background apps.

    • Issue is reproducible in multiple locations and aircraft.

I had this issue last night. I wasn’t sure that I’d used the EFB Prior to it happening but I now recall jumping onto the map early on. I was using the Ini A330.

Same here.

I play in career mode with the 737 (Asobo). Since SU3, it’s no longer playable for that reason. One of the first “actions” in the cockpit is to feed the FMC. To do this, I open the EFB to compare all the information and check the waypoints/legs. From that point on, the simulator starts to respond more and more slowly (the frame rate drops significantly from second to second) over the next 1 to 2 minutes until it finally becomes completely unplayable / unresponsive.

Before opening the EFB/Flight Planner app:

  • GPU utilization ~ 90%
  • GPU temp ~ 67C

After opening the EFB/Flight Planner app:

  • At first performance seemed okay so I went ahead and planned a full IFR flight in the Flight Planner app
  • Massive and consistent (about 1 every second) stutters on MainThread, RdrThread, and CoherentGTUIThread began
  • GPU utilization drops as low as 8% during stutters/spikes in response time
  • GPU temp ~ 60C
  • Stutters become longer in duration as time goes on, sim is essentially pausing for a full second every 1-2 seconds

Edit: Issue persisted even after ending the flight and got so bad that the only way to close the sim was via Task Manager.

It's exactly the same for me.
After the SU3, I reinstalled the simulator, updated the graphics card drivers, cleared the cache from the graphics card and DX. It all came to nothing. Things were actually going well for me before the SU3

I’ve been facing the same issue since SU3. GPU utilization keeps dropping whenever I open the EFB, making the game unplayable. I already tried uninstalling/reinstalling and updating the drivers, but nothing helped. Everything was working perfectly before SU3. GPU 5080 CPU 9800x3d

Same problem here! The past days I have used various AC (A330, B787, A350) and used the EFB and had bad FPS and that made landings almost impossible. Today I made a 6 hr flight in the PMDG 777 from Bogota tot LAX. I didn’t open the EFB once and had a very smooth flight and landing. No notacible FPS drop. I think the EFB is the culprit.

i have the same problem 6 months into SU3 testing and yet SU3 managed to wreck the game

I’ve had this issue since SU3 as well. Doesn’t do it every time I open EFB but that is the cause when it does it. Can be before loading into the airport or when I’m in the air, just random when it does it and drops frames from 30 to 4-5fps

I just did a flight with ini A330-300 from KSTL to EDDF avoiding to use EFB and had no problems so far, no weird stutters or frame drops. This time the flight was made with FSHud and AI traffic on from AIG. So for me is clear that the efb is problem here. I tried with clean install before and now with addons and same result. When I touched EFB, the frames and gpu usage went down. This happened also with default 737 max, ini A321 from what I tested until now.

Trying to reproduce this issue this morning with the exact same test case and I was not able to trigger the issue. Wondering if it’s a server-side issue specific to the Planner app.

Mine was using the pc24 in career mode. I can do the same mission one minute it will cause the issue, try an hour later and will be fine. Almost like its struggling to generate and send the route

The planner app doesn’t stream from cloud services. The only things streamed would be the map terrain tiles, but those are done sim-side and presented as a whole terrain graphic to the EFB app. They would not appear as time in Coherent threads.

For folks experiencing this issue, does it get better or worse if you zoom the map in? Maybe to say 10NM or so range.

The spike being in combination with Manipulators thread says to me the spike is because the EFB app is waiting for data from the sim (Manipulators threads participate in various I/O, perhaps periodic navdata requests for map display). But it’s hard to say for sure without a repro.

even after ending mission/flight the game stays at 4-5fps for me, can be in main menu with it at 5fps and have to close the whole game down and restart to get the fps back

What is your VRAM usage you observe when your FPS goes to 4-5?

cpu and gpu are at around 30% usage, memory i cant remember but none are maxing out at all

this must be the cause of my problem, I opened the efb flight planner and fps went down dramatically.

Would really need to see the devmode FPS screen to gain any additional understanding.

For anyone experiencing this, please post that screen or a video of that screen as the OP did.

after a bit more testing mine seems to be when i set the altitude in the EFB.

this is an hour after setting altitude

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk first started without EFB and after opening the EFB there was a performance drop in the GPU. On the 737 Max, where the EFB can be seen in the cockpit, I also had a breakdown in the GPU. When I wanted to make a video on the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, there was suddenly no drop in FPS on the GPU.
