Sharing my experience building new PC for MSFS VR

Just sharing this for anyone on an older system debating upgrading for smooth VR.

After about a month of flying VR with a Reverb G2 on my 5-year old PC (i7-7700K, 3060 added last year), I decided the time had come to build a brand-new PC to remove all bottlenecks holding back performance with MSFS and VR. I could not find a 4090 so I settled for a 4080 paired with an i7-13700 on an Asus Z790-E, 32GB DDR5-6800 RAM and a 990 Pro M.2.

I just completed the build and have not even optimized the BIOS settings beyond enabling XMP. Installed MSFS and was pleasantly surprised that all my controller bindings, including HOTAS, MFD etc. were automatically transferred from my MS account profile, saving me a lot of time.

Jumped into VR over NYC and couldn’t believe it. Silky-smooth perfection even with rapid head movements. Made a sharp bank looking left over the wing to the ground and all is still smoothly passing by giving me almost a queezy sensation because it is so smooth and real. Dropped over Central Park and buzzed between the skyscrapers, no stutter, no FPS drop. Went to LA and Chicago, same story.

Absolutely worth every dollar I spent!

Yeah the 4090 is insane. I run DLSS quality with OXR 200-230% now with 45fps locked, it’s mental.

I have an Alienware R11 with 3080 and i9 and one of those M.2 thingies, and it’s still amazing how smooth it runs MSFS in VR. I’m curious, did you end up doing any more tweaks?

Hi

Using the Icon A5 plane there seems to be a problem in VR mode where the Power Lever keeps going full throttle when flying, very annoying not sure why yet?

The plane seems much smaller in V R L.O.L

And yes it makes me feel a bit dizzy ,but OK if you make turns slowly

I read a review that turn’s a lot of M.S.F.S rendering settings off, so I followed that and it run’s fairly smoothly

I found out I could add a new board to boot M.S.F.S from within the Quest Main Boot Screen this however disappears when M.S.F.S is closed down so not a lot of use.

My review of the Quest 2 headset to help setting up M.S.F.S

First off all Quest 2 is a great bit of kit and it takes you to a new world of gaming, however there are quite a few learning curves to go through so here is a bit of help

  1. You can connect this to a PC using a link cable or WIFI. the cable connection works fine, however the WIFI 2.4 gig and the 5 g can cause issues. it’s very dependent on the amount of traffic and channel interference you get with your WIFI

  2. Something to bear in mind hear is that when you buy games - Apps from the QUEST store there are PC and headset versions, so if you buy a game whilst connected to your PC, it may not be available to use on your headset

  3. Just using the headset is working fine with software from the Quest store and in general it also works whilst using the cable connection, however there are other options like running VR with Steam or VR with your PC programs like M.SF.S these can cause you problems . I’ve got M.S.F.S working but have reduced a lot of the M.S.F.S settings to get it to work WIFI was hopeless, so I use the cable link. Steam is a bit iffy I’m still looking into that

  4. If you want to use your PC you need additional software, but be careful here,

a. Oculas A PC app , you need this to install and run the PC Headset games, don’t get confused with normal PC games, you use this App to set up your Oculas account password and Devices etc, I believe there is a Mobile version of this as well

b.Steam VR you possibly need this to run VR games from Steam if Oculas doesn’t work , Don’t install this if not needed.

c. OpenXR from Microsoft, I installed this as it was asked for

d. Virtual Desktop Streamer, if you want to run your VR PC games, be aware that this ask’s you to uninstall software that my conflict like, Malware Bytes, I’ve ignored this one, I’m not leaving my PC unprotected
