Hi
I have noticed that in the simulator (no matter what aircraft i fly) when my fps drops below 45, my sim looses its smoothness and begins to jitter. Above 45, my sim is smooth as butter. I have a ryzen 5 5600x and an rtx 3070, with 32gb 3600mhz ram. I have seen people online with their fps capped at 35, which gives them a very smooth experience, however, my sim is only smooth at around 50fps. I have spent hours trying to fix it… any advice?
Thanks:)
What is your monitor refresh rate, and what resolution are you playing with? I have mine at 1440p with vsync on at 100% for my 60hz monitor. I also set Max Framerate in the Nvidia control panel to 59. If you can set your monitor refresh to 60hz that would be ideal. If your monitor refresh is set to 45hz, then set vsync to 100% and max framerate to 44.
hi, i have a 165hz monitor at 1440p, ive messes around with vsync but not much, what are your suggestions?
i can set my monitor to 60
Set it to 60hz, turn off Gsync and Vsync (use global setting use the 3D app) in the Nvidia Control Panel. Turn ON Vsync in game and set it to 100% (60fps). This should work fine. Additionally, you can set the Max Frame Rate in the Nvidia Control Panel to 59.
I don’t have a Gsync monitor, so my settings only show Vsync.
thank you sir, ill give it a go, what are your specs?
I have a 60hz 4k monitor that I run at 1440p, like you. I have the 3080Ti with an i7 11gen CPU. It’s working great for me.
hi, this has somewhat helped, however, when panning in congested areas when my sim is maintaining 40-43 fps, there are still alot of microstutters, so its not smooth at all. it almost seems unfixable…but thank you!
The Max Frame Rate setting does not always work with Vsync, as I have just been reading. You can probably turn Max Frame Rate OFF in the NCP. This will make your GPU work harder though. Vsync uses a triple buffering method, and Max Frame Rate turns off buffering.
If you have a GSYNC monitor, you can enable GSYNC, leave your refresh rate at 60 in the NCP and in the game choose 30fps for VSYNC. You should experiment a bit. Gsync on, vsync off. Gsync and vsync on. Gsync off and vsync on.
I notice when I run my monitor at 4k, i get the blurring effect as I pan my head back and forth. It seems smoothest at 1080p. The only drawback is the screenshots are not as nice.
I don’t mean to slag Gsync, but I had a gsync monitor for 3 days and gave it to my son. He loves it. I couldn’t stand it. I prefer a 60hz monitor.
Further testing revealed that the blurring affect is due to the lower FPS setting (30fps) and goes away when I set Vsync to 60fps.
In order to hit a solid 60fps, I have to set my graphics preset to High-End PC and my resolution to 1080p or 1440p.
Here’s a test you should perform. Turn off all Gsync and Vsync and Max Frame Rate. Set Low Latency Mode to Ultra in the NCP. Leave your monitor refresh at the max default 165. Select High-End PC graphics preset (or even Mid Level), and select 1080p for resolution. This will allow your system to go as fast as it can. However, you will notice some tearing along vertical textures (at least I do). See how it feels with very high FPS.

Looks like you need to keep your FPS as high as possible. That means Low Latency Mode = Ultra, High-end PC preset, and resolution 1080p. Try with Gsync on and off, and try with Vsync on and off if you get tearing.
I have identical specs with OP with 165hz 1440p monitor. Under 50fps my sim is not smooth and i’ve been trying everything, but still 40fps doesn’t look smooth, especially when panning around in the cockpit.
allways choose the native solution and use the render-scale settings. Otherwise the downscale can makes thing blurry.
Also the hints about reduce monitor to 60fps.. If @WhiteVanMAN6 own a G-Sync monitor , then set the 165 within NCP and enable the G-Sync. Then in-game activate V-sycn max and thats it. Of course it depends on the specific monitor model he own and the G-sync range.
Setting a max framerate in NCP is allways a good idea, at least to monitors max. Also not forget to set Max-Background-fps ( if you not have msfs in focus, you not need full fps ).
thats exactly my issue!
yup, mine is 165 gsync, ill give it a shot!
@OldpondGL @MichaMMA thanks for the fab help guys! So, after some testing…
I spawned in at the aerosoft brussels, in the fenix sim a320,on high/ultra settingts at 1440p, with volanta and vatsim open.
i could maintain 40-45 fps. The sim wasnt anywhere near as choppy, and panning the camera was ok, still a little choppy, but much better and much more playable.
I turned vsync off in ncp and turned low latency mode to ultra. i then turned vsync off in game. Gsync is still active, but it has improved the situation.
i wouldnt necessarily say this is solved as such and any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated… however the smoothness is better than it was.
this will probably be of use to you @badgamer7880
The only other suggestions are to set the in game resolution to 1080p, turn Terrain LOD down to 100, turn off Texture SuperSampling, Turn off Terrain Shadows and Contact Shadows, and turn off Ambient Occlusion.
This video is a great way to dial in your settings. If you can’t see a difference between the gradients, there’s no reason to select the higher ones.
interestingly, 1440p performs better than 1080p on my system, but thank you
well, we have to distinguish the cases
- caused from monitor sync
- caused from game performance
I assume, the first point is “fixed” now.
Related to the second point you can only try to find a game-setting which works well for your, as @OldpondGL mentioned. But also then, dont forget that there are many factors and some times it can not be better ( currently ). In special near big Airports, on ground or some time with enabled PG is MSFS not allways the “smootest game in the world” . The other hint about tLOD was already mentioned. Related to “panning” you can try different “area pre-cache” settings… but there are lots of other hints in forum.
Not long and we get the SU10, may be it contains some performance optimizations ( what I read in beta topics sounds not so bad ).
Yes, my game is smooth as silk. I disable Photogrametry and turn off all AI because these just waste resources in my opinion. Still, some aircraft in some custom airport areas stutter constantly. Testing should be done in stock aircraft over generic airports.
BTW, Gsync works just like Adaptive Vsync in the NCP. If the frame rate goes above 165 (very unlikely) it turns on Vsync. If it stays below 165, it turns Vsync off. Also, if you set Vsync OFF in the NCP it ignores the in game settings for Vsync. So, if you want to test Vsync, turn off Gsync, leave the Vsync setting at the default in the NCP (use 3d app), and turn it on in game settings. Alternately, you can leave Vsync off in the game settings, and try Vsync FAST in the NCP (again, with Gsync off).
