SimConnect support for Xbox editions

There are a number of technical hurdles to making something like SimConnect viable for XBox. But by far the biggest hurdle is that the XBox is not allowed to listen for socket connections on TCP from inside a game as a server.

So, you would need to add an additional connection negotiation mode for SimConnect that would use either UDP broadcast or maybe cloud assisted discovery, that would then negotiate in the opposite direction, by treating the application as the host and the sim as the client. It’s not insanely complex but the SimConnect code is pretty old and a bit arcane, and there’s nothing about that in the current spec either. So it would be potentially a breaking API change as well.

It’s definitely an interesting idea, but as Seb mentioned would be something that we’ll likely have a bit lower on the priority list given all the other things that need to be done this year.

Yes, for me it’s this! From my understanding, Flight Simulator does not have a career mode so modifications like FSEconomy and Self-Loading Cargo addon which allow passenger simulation would be an excellent addition. I would happily pay for these addons on the XBOX marketplace.

Just bought my XBOX Series S (for the first time, have been a lifelong Playstation owner) - and waiting to purchase and download FS2020 on July 27!!

Headed for Best Buy to return my brand new XBox Series X. What a huge disappointment! Trying to make a silk purse… as the old expression goes. If you love shooter games, mebbie it’s for you, but honestly, it was a VERY underwhelming experience, and never made it to MSFS. The artifacts and shimmering on PGA Golf alone were extremely off-putting. I boxed it all back up and heading for refund… your mileage may vary, but it strongly appears that this thing is NOT going to be making up for a decent gaming PC for flight simming. Was running it into a OLED LG CX 65 in full gaming mode 120hz refresh rate. Will try hooking my laptop up and see what happens! It’s got to be better than a XBox. Disappointed am I…

I was on the same track, having purchased an XBox Series X. After trying an assortment of other games connected to my OLED LG TV with gaming features on and 120 hz refresh rate, I was VERY disappointed in the quality of the games being displayed on my screen. Underwhelmed, if you will. So I boxed it back up and returned it for refund. In my opinion, trying to ‘make a sim platform’ from a gaming console had a lot of appeal from a PRICE perspective (as you mentioned), trying to avoid huge investment in a ‘gaming PC’. That said, I think prices will soon decline on PC parts once the other shoe drops and the government stops handing out free money. You are already seeing a huge downtick in crypto currency (already 45% drop from Bitcoin’s high), and coupled with China’s thumbs down on crypto, the NVidia and AMD gaming cards with anti-mining technology should mean gamers will be able to buy moderate machines for a much more reasonable cost. In plain language, I feel that the XBox was a great concept, but the realization of that meant trade offs. Rendering MSFS in 4K is a herculean task because the number of pixels involved is much much higher say than 1080p or even 1440. The more pixels per frame (which increase as you go higher and higher resolution) means much more heavy lifting for the rendering platform. The XBox resembles a large toaster, so how much power do you really think it has? There is no way that it could have a graphics card capability anywhere near what a RTX 3000-series card could handle. So I had to face reality, that is the XBox is a great concept poorly realized. For Microsoft, it’s a great money magnet though, as it makes it easy to sell software to gamers who will pay for more gaming chips, or add-ons to their shooter games, etc, etc… or even “new” games. It’s like having a slot machine or an ATM in your living room, ready to take your money 24/7. Now THAT is a ‘smart’ device :frowning:

:+1: You are speaking the truth. Imagine trying to put all your flight deck gear in front of your TV in the living room!

You returned a next gen console that isn’t even 12 months into it’s probable 10 year life span?

Wowsers.

Yup. Wait and see- Criswell predicts: The XBox even connected to a high-end 4k Television with Variable Refresh Rate and G-Sync and AMD-Sync is never going to provide a 4K experience anywhere close to what a decent 8+ core CPU and a 3070 or higher NVidia GPU will, and I know that for a fact. My old PC had the grandaddy of the 3090 (a GTX TITAN X [next step above a 980]) which back then was a substantial 4-DIGIT price point, and running 3 monitors at 1080p it was fantastic. Time will tell. The return window at Best Buy would have closed prior to the launch date for MSFS on XBox (27 July). So I’m going to have to invest in a more substantial PC or laptop. Origin PC will custom build either one with 3000 series GPUs. I think small form factor mini PC will be the call…I’m not one for the LED fans and such… I’m more interested in what’s on my monitor than what’s under my desk or sitting next to my TV. If you had seen the tall rough at the USGA Championship shimmering/artifacting you would understand why I returned the XBox. It was so off-putting and obviously phony…hugely disappointing.

There was never a GTX 1090. Did you have the 1080?

I edited my above comment - you’re right, it was even one generation PRIOR to the 1080, it was the GTX 900-series, and the top card was the Titan X. Way back in the day it was considered ridiculously expensive at around $1K. Two of my sim buddies got one as well. Everyone was super happy with the frames flying P3D. NVidia has gone crazy with their latest generation pricing - and the crypto guys and eBay’ers have pushed prices through the roof and availability into the sewer…

I think one thing to make sure is that those applications needs to be coded to run as an Xbox apps.

There’s no technical way to do it right now. Well explained as a subtopic in this thread;

It may come, but don’t hold your breath for any implementation that allows multiple systems to connect to an Xbox.

Thanks for sharing that post. An interesting read.

I will miss a handful of Simconnect apps, LittleNavMap for example, but I can live with my disappointment.

Mostly.

VATSIM not being available on Xbox is “simulator malpractice”.

So much for VATSIM being a “partner”.

This is needed for sure! Xbox as a platform will be so much more welcoming for people who have had flight simulators earlier.

It’s a literal rumor, don’t mention rumors. You’re sounding like that zeroblog guy, I personally believe simcinnect will not be on console. If you want a real flight sim experience, just get a PC. Another thing Microsoft can do is fix their default aircraft, maybe console players will enjoy that. For gods sake what would console players be doing with a a32nx, controlling with a controller. I’ve tried the series X version, not as enjoyable as the PC from my perspective

You do realize that you can connect M&KB to the series X, don’t you? Then there is no difference at all. It is just a computer with a somewhat closed system.

I never asked if it was a closed system or a difference, I’m asking what is the purpose?

Did you read the thread at all?
The purpose is that a series s or x is much cheaper than a comparable PC. Almost everybody has any multimedia PC or notebook in the household, so with simconnect on xbox many more people could enjoy 3rd party external tools like volanta, neofly, fseconomy, airhauler etc. that will run on this pc or notebook, even when it is a weak / old one

Edit: and since you brought up a32nx. Why shouldn’t someone on xbox want an airbus with more functionalities than default? This is not the topic here at all, but for your statement my initial reply is still valid. No difference in the controls, so no question if there should be any aircraft on xbox or not.

I don’t think that should be their top priority, their top priority should be fixing the game, and producing good quality updates.

Doesn’t the latest FBW A32NX have built in maps? Apparently the latest hotfix did not fix the damage to FBW A32NX so they have temporarily removed it from the MP. As a likely future Series X user I am thrilled at the possibility of being able to use the FBW mod!
