SSD usage 100%

Hi, I have an issue with MSFS2020.

I have some freezes and when I look at the performances on Windows, it seems to be due to my SSD that is used at 100%:

I do not know why. Can you help me please?

Config:

  • Ryzen 7 9800X3D (new one, I had i5-12600K before)
  • Nvidia RTX4070
  • RAM 32 Go DDR5

Is that where you have MSFS installed?

Also what Motherboard are you using, and which slot do you have the SSD’s in as this can play a role on their performance.

Yes, D: is where I install games and some apps.

The motherboard is Gigabyte B850M AORUS ELITE WIFI6E ICE.

For the slot I do not know because the motherboard and the processor was installed by a company.

I’m assuming they are M2’s?

When this occurs, if you go into Processes (in Task Manager) and sort by Disk, is there anything else consuming it other than MSFS?

Also any AntiVirus that may be scanning that drive?

No it is SATA SSD.

This is what I have in the BIOS of the motherboard:

M2 is only for system (C:)

Ah okay, disregard then

I would check to see what processes are using the Drive in Task Manager when it occurs, and then also check your A/V.

Can also perform a disk check make sure there are no hardware issues.

Hardware (disk check) is OK. And According to Christal Disk info, all SSDs are at 100% (state of health).

I will do an other plane to see processes when it happens.

Also note when the disk saturation occurs - all the time or only during specific times like take off/landing.

Most of the time this happens during descent and landing.

Oh wait, I did chkdsk on C: and not D:.
When I do it on D:, I have 100% of usage and it is long (2.73 minutes). It was not the case for C: (quicker => 13.37s). For E: (same SSD than D:), it is quicker (5s).

While I’m unable to translate the chkdsk screen shot, it does appear to have generated errors. I would recommend that you rerun chkdsk with the following parameters to repair the disk:

CHKDSK D: /F /R

note there is a space between each parameter

No at the end it says that nothing have been found but as it is slow (and very long), I suspect that the SSD is the cause. I will clone it on a new one.

During descent high res textures of the approach need to be streamed into the rolling cache. Then the CPU has to decompress and copy the textures to the GPU.

Those tasks put a high load on the SSD.

Yes, but not 100% on a healthy SSD.

The fact the scan is slow performing is probably a good tell it may be going faulty.

How large is it and how much data does it contain?

The SSD has a capacity of 1TB and 600GB are used.

400GB ahould be enough however, somethings not right.

Check which program or process is using the most disk percentage when you experience the issue.

edit
FYI, if you update your BIOS in the future, don’t forget to disable ErP in the BIOS settings before proceeding with the update.

So I cloned data on a new M2 SSD (Kingston NV3). I will test at the end of the week with a flight but when I start the game, the usage is not at 100% as I had sometimes with other SSD.

And how’s the disk check performance on the new one ?

Chkdsk is executed in 4s instead of more than 2 minutes (with no error for both)
