Yes, I am talking about the âhand-modelledâ bridges such as the one near the Hoover dam, next to the Glen Canyon Dam or the Navajo Bridge (which have all been recently added with the USA scenery update).
And I have ârealisticâ flight settings and the Modern aircraft model, for that matter (specifically with collision / crash detection - no developer mode).
What happens is that as soon as I seem to just have passed the bridge (and I also checked with an outside view: no collision whatsoever - a âclean fly-throughâ) is that the Black Screen of Death appears - with the message saying that I should have lowered my landing gear. Wut?
Another time I could literally hear my engine go âfull stopâ (turned off) and a split second later again the BSoD, with âlanding gear was upâ.
So the interesting part is that it doesnât even say âcollision with objectâ (because in fact there wasnât any), but rather the simulator seems to think that I hit the ground (which I havenât either, of course) without deployed landing gear. Or that I am otherwise trying to land, and it shuts down the engine for me (yeah, thanks ;)).
I have read here in the forum that people claimed that it should be possible to fly at least under hand-modelled (point of interest) bridges. I know that it is not possible with âphotogrametry bridgesâ or otherwise âAI generated bridgesâ. So the collision detection routine seems to have a more fundamental âproblem with bridgesâ (overhead geometry?).
What is your experience? Any luck with flying under bridges? Yeah, I know, it is not a killer feature (well, actually it is right now - and I have seen other pilots evaporate into nothing under bridges, believe me ) But one day I want to be able to fly my 747 under the Golden Gate Bridge - in inverted flight! That is not an unrealistic feature request, is it?
If my memory serves me well, in earlier versions of FS it was possible to fly under the golden gate, even with a 747.
In the current version itâs not possible.
Not a very big deal but hey, perhaps itâs possible in the ( near?) future.
Regarding the Hooverdam bridge : IRL there are powerlines hanging from left to right, between the dam and the bridge wich are not vissible in the sim.
I think that this will only vissible in the sim after the designer edit this location by hand.
It´s also a problem with unvisible bridges. Yesterday I flow the drone in Vegas, there is a pedestianbrigde only drawed on the ground but I got collision error as I fly over
Your memory serves you very well. That is, if we are indeed talking about earlier Flight Simulator releases, as in Flight Simulator X, Flight Simulator 98 etc. (and not some previous patch release of FS2020 itself).
I guess it is safe to say that a pilot with the intention of flying under the bridge near the Hoover Dam does not care about any low hanging power lines either: âIâll cut through them like butter!â
Well, the Hoover Dam and its bridge are now âedited by handâ (they are specifically hand-crafted as a point of interest): they are part of the recent USA scenery update. So donât expect any power lines anytime soon
I managed to fly the Pitts Special under the Hoover Dam bridge yesterday, came under over the top of the dam and climbed successfully out on the other side.
I was flying with only the recent USA update, Iâd removed my previous community Hoover Dam scenery.
Canât vouch for other POI bridges from new USA update, as havenât tried those as yet.
Ref Bridges ⌠especially over water ⌠maybe the AI just needs educating.
Roads and railway lines are another strangely unrealistically rendered items
With such an extensive CAR GPS systems, having mapped roads, one would have thought that this data would be incorporated into the AI engine, resulting in far better road clarity and accuracy.
I really would like at least the Railway lines into the OSHKOSH area better done by next summer, along the Ripon Fiske Arrival ⌠flying into Oshkosh in 2021 in the sim is something many have been waiting for, with such realistic VFR âBing / AIâ scenery provided by MSFS.
I did as well last night at the Hoover dam bridge, except I was in the excellent Aermacchi jet trainer at 200+ knots. So I think the OP is mistaken. I have also flown the Pitts under some bridges on the Tiber near Rome, although I am not sure if they were crash detectable.
Well, I am not saying that it does not work at all. I am just saying that so far it did not work for me. And others (see link to Reddit).
But it may also depend on the actual airplane model (âjet vs propellerâ etc.).
However so far those people who claimed to be able to fly under bridges either suggested to âenable developer modeâ (which is not what I am looking for), or otherwise are unable to confirm whether they have a ârealistic flight modelâ selected.
In any case, good to know that it seems to work with some aircraft (maybe also depends on the speed: maybe if you fly âfast enoughâ then the weird âcollision detectionâ system wonât be triggered?).
Ah, could well be me who is mistaken, as although my realism is set to hard, I probably had dev mode on at the Hoover dam the other night, as Iâve been bench testing my new RX 6800 XT GPU.
on the one hand we whine how the sim is not realistic, too buggy etc etc⌠on the other hand we expect to fly jets under the hoover dam bridge and try pedestrian bridges in Vegas⌠Whatâs next? a Boeing 747 formation flight thru the Channel Tunnel?
Iâve tried to fly under the Hoover dam bridge with the Icon and the JMB, latest US update version⌠I always crash with a âfailed to deploy landing gearâ message. And to say that itâs because of this tweet⌠https://twitter.com/MSFSofficial/status/1331741958910341123
