Strange Water/Cloud Rendering Artifacts Since Sim Update 5

Please add the msfs-2020 or msfs-2024 tag to your post, depending on which sim your post is about.

Since Sim Update 5, I have been noticing strange visual artifacts over water surfaces that were not present before.

The issue appears both in external views and from inside the aircraft cabin.

What I see:

  • Vertical striped formations over the ocean.

  • Bright reflective columns or bands extending across the water.

  • Strange shimmering patterns appearing near clouds and cloud shadows.

  • The effect becomes more noticeable at cruise altitude.

  • The artifacts move and change as the camera angle changes.

The screenshots attached show several examples of the issue.

At first I thought it might be related to my installation or graphics settings, but after discussing it with other users, I found that multiple people have been reporting similar visual anomalies since Sim Update 5.

The issue has been present for me both in the standard release and in the SU5 beta builds.

Has anyone else noticed these water/cloud rendering artifacts?

It would be helpful to know whether this is already a known issue introduced with SU5 and whether a fix is currently being investigated.

Thank you.

Here are the screenshots. Fix it. Regards.

There are a couple of threads related to this. If you have the “Project Coastline” from the marketplace and it’s streaming, it may be related to this issue:

Other than that issue, I’m not sure what else it could be. Hopefully another XBox user will see this thread and respond if they’ve seen/fixed this issue.

I see these two but they’ve been there waayyyy longer than SU5. It’s possible they’ve gotten worse though. I hate them, they make the clouds look terrible and it’s super immersion-breaking. I don’t understand why more people aren’t concerned about this.

This is probably the most annoying visual issue for me right now. What’s also strange is that a lot of the times the clouds look fine, and in many other situations you see these ugly mangled cloud patterns.
