Hello,
Please have a look at the following issue: with all 10 DVD content copied to drive D: without problems apparently at present my only choice is to use the “setup” on DVD1
which passes me directly on to the Microsoft Store where the FS is marked as “installed”.
When clicking there on the FS image an “Installation” button is offered and a choice between
HDD1 C: (too small, no way) and HDD2 D: (marked in green as usable).
Loops back to HDD choice when clicked.
Thank you for any hint (and perhaps, have a glance at the history below)
Kind regards
Martin
Long and partially bizarre history:
Setup starting as usual with other software. Setup destination set to D:, language chosen as English (system is German). Copying of DVD contents slighty tedious (understandable due to size) but working flawlessly. After DVD10 and a successful MS Store registration a strange image of a castle is appearing with a two options overlay in grey and in German language (!) offering to tune my FS game experience, with two alternative buttons “installation pathway” and “update” only. The update apparently loaded some huge FS files but was a dead end. Finally the FS icon in the START menu did point directly to the MS Store. Once clicked on the FS icon it reloaded the grey overlay.
The present situation is the result of my efforts to get out of the grey window overlay loop situation.
Terribly sorry for this nebulous history without screenshots (I had no issues with installations previously). My system is described in the profile.
Perhaps a “How to find back to a clean re-start from scratch” or a clue to a potentially working later installer step on the basis of the existing DVD files on HDD D: would help. At the moment I am not even able to do this as the DVD1 setup is passing me directly through to the MS Store with the FS icon image and the “installed” but the software not working as illustrated above.
no double posting to other forums nd sorry for any missed link - thank you.
I think at this stage. It would be much simpler and faster to just download the Sim straight from the store instead of from the DVD.
Thank you very much! I will check this out (no previous experience with the MS shop).

I think the one thing to note is that the DVD product key is not used to install the sim. It’s to unlock the app and have it registered to your Microsoft/Xbox account.
As soon as the key is used, your account is authorised to use the Sim. That’s why when you tried to use the key again, it won’t let you because that key has already been redeemed.
Besides, with the many updates and patches the Sim has for almost 1 year in. The total download size would be almost the size of the DVD installation as well. So even if you use the DVD to reinstall the Sim. Once the Sim tries to update it would be downloading the entire Sim worth of files since it’s trying to download all the cumulative updates.
At least with just downloading straight from the MS store. You’re already getting the latest version directly.
That’s just how it is these days, I’m afraid. I live in Australia so we don’t get the DVD version sold here. I also haven’t had a PC with DVD drive since 2016. So I dunno how that could really work for your case.
I simply observe and make assumptions based on how online DRM works.
Thank you once more, Neo. Meanwhile I opened an “XBOX Ultimate” account and started the download from the MS store as suggested by you. Just reveived my first download error message - not your fault. Will keep trying …
Kind regards to Australia
Martin
Why do you need to open a new Xbox ultimate account? You should just need to login using the same microsoft account that you use the first time you start MSFS after installing with the DVD key.
I have the feeling that you are perfectly right in many respects (DVD hardware vs. more modern download, and yes, also about the MS store download with the elder key). But don`t worry, the “ultimate” key is very cheap unless one should forget to dispose of it over the years to come …
In the beginning of my installation endeavour the point was that I could see the “installed” FS in the MS store but was stuck when clicking on it. Analogous problems appear now when I am coming from the XBOX ultimate account. In the XBOX approach the respective “FS” or “FS standard edition” symbol images can be clicked as well but then the installation is stuck with some “0B from 111 GB” “preparing to install” message followed by an “0x00000001” error code about a minute later.
My feeling is that I will have to clean up my system in several respects: First of all, one cause of the initial problem appear to be my old WLAN USB sticks recycled from one of the older computers. When monitoring an other, less complicated and working XBOX installation I found out that these old sticks tend to get hot in the USB 3.0 slot after ca. 2 GB of data download and drop in performance then (mea culpa, I ordered something less antique meanwhile :-).
Second, I think that there is still some kind of remaining “download barrier” due to the first FS installations’ remains. I have read multiple online advices about this (registry editing, store reset, bird like selective file removal picking etc.) but apparently didn´t hit the spot yet.
In any case I would like to mention that your comments are tremendously helpful for a broader understanding of the situation. Thank you for your patience and helpful advice!

This is my present ´stuck situation´. After a few hours of a second complete DVD copy procedure, when finally being invited to install to HDD D: (marked in green, i.e. with sufficient storage space) I can click on this blue “Installieren” button but will loop back to the same HDD choice menu window again and again (and yes, DVD1 is in the drive and all those DVD files are definitely on drive D:).
A direct download from the store as suggested above NEOwise (clicking on the FS symbol image for a direct complete download) doesn`t work as well. Instead it is reporting a preparation to install and then shows continuously “0B transferred” (whereas other store software can be accessed and appears to begin with a regular download).
Now I don`t want to bore you any longer with all this (a fresh Win10 install from scratch appears to be the minor threat and is coming closer …) but perhaps someone among you might know whether this is an installer issue due to some remains in the D:\app directory or whether there is another known reason overlooked by me. I have tried to look into this hidden App directory by means of a “take ownership” utility but was not successful yet - being told that I had some kind of mixed rights situation now …
Summa summarum
Apparently many buyers, e.g. in the Amazon feedback area, are reporting issues with the FS DVD version install and my present feeling is that it might not be their fault only.
The overall situation reminds me of a friend working in a well-known computer company, telling me a few years ago “Well, you know we had to deliver the latest update of our software with ca. 200 known bugs due to a management deadline …”.
Sorry for this slightly off-topic addendum but I think that the FS DVD installer scenario might possibly be a little bit more communicative, fail safe and user friendly.
[RESOLVED] Thank your for all of you who were listening to my lengthy contributions - and in particular for NEOs advice. On the third pathway, via XBOX, and a second try thereof the second step installer apparently is loading now.
Not satisfying from the intellectual viewpoint (which would imply a thorough understanding) but from the practical viepoint (working).
