Study Level Cessna 172

Has any third party dev announced a study level 172 yet for MSFS?

I had the REP add-on in X-Plane and really enjoyed it.

What more do you need than the C172 Classic and the GNS 530 mod?

Persistence of the aircraft’s state from the end of one session to the start of the next would be nice. Make you have to taxi over and refuel; engine oil and plugs age and deteriorate or foul; things like that…

ah … you want an owner maintained 172 instead of a renter

Yo fellas.

Looking for a good C172 with analog instruments.
I have the Standard edition of MSFS so the WBSim which would have been great… won’t do.

What’s the next best thing ?

I have the JPLogistics enhancement for the C152 - which is very good - and have been using it since day one.

But more looking for a C172. Long story short this is what I’m flying back home at the airclub and I feel the differences between the C152 and C172. I would prefer a C172, but if there is no good one out there I’ll just keep flying the C152. Not… a world class problem.

Thanks.

The best solution is upgrade your MSFS to get the Steam c172 and then buy the mod for it.

Failing that - the best alternate similar aircraft to the c172 is probably Just Flight’s Warrior II . Though do note that being in the same performance and weight class as a 172 does not mean they fly the same.

Thanks for the suggestion. We have a PA28 at the airclub, this would be an alternative (not cheap but ok !) that works for me. I will checkout reviews online see what people say about it.
Cheers

Video I made last year of a short circuit in the Warrior.

It is the pick of the Just Flight PA28 and arguably one of the best single engine GA in the game. The JF PA28 Arrows are good and have higher performance but somehow the Warrior II just nails it.

Thanks for that.
I’m looking at the version of the PA-28 we have at the airclub and it’s a 180hp Archer.

Looking at what JF offers for MSFS, there is this Warrior you suggested (160hp) or the Arrow R (200hp I think).

Unfortunately ideally I would want the one right in the middle :grinning:.

Quick search, seems the reviews of the Warrior are excellent, I may just buy it even if it’s a bit underpowered vs the Archer.

Do you know if it’s possible to tweak a bit the Warrior to add 20hp to it ?

  • edit: alternatively, do you know of a good Archer ?
  • edit 2: the Arrow definitely won’t work, it seems to have a variable pitch propeller

The JF normal Arrow (they also have a turbo charged one) is variable pitch and retractable gear.

Note that Just Flight do have a Tomahawk in the works, but the Warrior II is probably still a better bet for emulating an Archer.

You can play with the flight models and tweak the performance in the config but ONLY IF you bought the aircraft outside the marketplace (from Orbx, direct from just Flight etc). Marketplace aircraft config files are encrypted. That may change with the upcoming patch.

Perfect ! Thanks for the education, I’ll go buy the Warrior (from outside the Market Place) later today and will report on my satisfaction lol :+1:.

@EdamllamaB Ok I have now installed the Warrior and flew around a bit. All the instruments I’m familiar with are there (of course not necessarily exactly at the same place but that’s fine).

  1. I am experiencing the elevator twitching mentioned here. I have no yoke/pedals installed, just using the keyboard this afternoon. Have you found a way to solve this issue ? That’s a bit annoying.
  2. I have not flown the Warrior 160hp IRL but the Archer 180hp I’m familiar with is pretty close to what I’m seeing here in terms of performance. I got the POH of our Archer so I’m going to do more testing and adjust the power of the engine so that it matches closer (yes I understand I’ll need to do that at MTOW). But we’re already quite close I think, just add a bit more power. I presume I need to fiddle with the flight_model.cfg file ? Can you briefly explain what I need to do here ? If you’re not sure no worries I’ll go ask on JF’s website.

Thanks.

Not sure. The Warrior II is quite susceptible to turbulence which is buggy in MSFS at present. Try flying in the early morning just after sunrise and see if you still have the issue.

It would be engines.cfg in the section called [PISTON_ENGINE] where you can fiddle with horsepower, displacement, max rpm etc etc .

I think there is actually a mod kicking about that adds more performance to the Warrior, not sure. Have a search around.

Ok I added 20hp in the engines.cfg and I think that will do.
Noted on the turbulence, the twitching seems to largely go away when I remove all weather.

Thanks again for the help. I think I’m sorted :+1:.
