Stuttering at Busy Airports - graphics & AMD Radeon RX 6900XT

I am having real problems on approach to busy airports (London Heathrow, Atlanta (Hartfield Int’l, etc.) where my frame rates drop to barely 5 fps, making a landing almost impossible. Same goes for the taxiing thereafter.

I would really like to know what graphics settings are best for users with AMD Radeon RX 6900XT graphics card. I also use a Ryzen 9 3900X CPU and have 64GB RAM onboard.

Everyone’s system is stressed under the circumstances you mentioned. I think it would be helpful if you provided a screen snapshot with the FPS monitor along with a snapshot of your current graphics settings and list any add ons such as FSLTL etc. My system is similar with a 5900x, RX 6800 and 32gig of memory so I can compare settings.

What is ‘FSLTL’?

Really? It’s a program used for AI injection into MSFS. What aircraft do you use to fly into these busy airports? What are your current settings, especially your TLOD (Terrain Level of Detail), do you have any 3rd party scenery or just default? Photogrammetry on or off?

Photogrammetry is ON. TLOD and OLOD both on ‘just’ 100 I am flying the A320 Neo FBW. I guess not knowing what FSLTL then it’s probably not one I have implemented.

(On landing)

Nearly ready for turning onto approach…

What is your native screen resolution and what do you have it set in sim? What is your Anti Aliasing set to such as TAA, FSR, etc.? VSYNC on or off? Do you have it set to 100%/50% or 33% for the frame lock?

I need to get into this ere technical jargon!

TAA is my selection
V-SYNC is set to ON

Where do I find the ‘frame lock’?

Don’t forget, I normally fly VR, using the HP Reverb G2 (version 2) headset. But these pics were done from my PC main screen.

Right below VSYNC, you should see a setting which allows you to toggle between 100%/50% or 33% and off. That’s the framerate limiter. So for example I have a screen which runs at 144hz. If it is set to 100% then the sim will try to run 144FPS. 50% 72, and 33% 49 something. I can also drop my hz down to 60 which will give me again 100% 60FPS, 50% 30, and 33% yeah wouldn’t want that. Playing around with it I found that 50% gives me the green box and everything else is usually yellow or red. When you have the sim running what does your task manager say about your ram being used? How much do you have? I also go into the MSFS process and change the affinity so that core 0 is not used by the sim which is typically the windows core and programs you run. Taking the sim off that 0 core allows for the sim to not have to vie for resources with everything else running. I actually did a fresh reinstall which fixed a lot of issues and smoothed things out for me but that is more of a last ditch effort.

Can you tell me exactly where this ‘affinity’ is so I can try turning this 0 to off?
I’m not a computerboffin so not familiar with the tech stuff or indeed, acronyms!
I have 64gb of RAM on an X570 motherboard. Radeon RX 6900XT graphics card and a Ryzen 9 x3900 CPU. I use a HP Reverb G2 (version 2) VR. What should the % setting be for this?
Also, I have my FS2020 installed on a dedicated 2TB SSD drive and NOT the C: (main operating) drive.

If you open your task manager and right click on a program you will see a go to details button, when you click that it’ll take you to your running process, right click Flight Simulator and you should see set affinity, when you click that it should open a box that shows all the cores that the program is using, typically it is all of them by default. Uncheck core 0 and then click OK, the sim should now run on every core but the zero core which is typically used for system processes. I like to think it adds some stability.

I also have MSFS installed on my D: and your system specs seem better than mine. You shouldn’t be getting the frames you are. Do me a favor, go to display settings, click on advanced display, should tell you what your display resolution is and the hertz aka your refresh rate, take note of it and also the dropdown box as well and see what your other hertz options are. For example my default resolution is 1920x1080 with 144hz and I have the option to drop it down to 60hz.

Also post a screenshot of your MSFS graphics from the options page so I can see how you have your anti aliasing set as well as your VSYNC and the percentage or lock you have it set to.

I am at work now so not home til 18:30hrs UK time.
I will do that for sure when I get home!
Thanks for your help!

Do I have to do this every time I stars FS2020?

For the affinity, yes. Otherwise it will default back to using all cores including core 0. Looking at your settings, thank you for posting, you don’t have VSYNC and since you’re in VR mode, I don’t know if I can really offer an assistance as to why your frames are so low. You’ll have to wait for someone else.
