Stutters on final, lower end systems

I think i have settled on 150 and 150 too…which is a shame as Pre SU6 my perfermance was really great with LOD 200

I have gysync compatible monitor and I ahve been using Vsync and 60 fps set in MSFS. I ahve found this made things a bit smoother overall, but didn’t eliminate the landing stutters. I’ll try 30 and see how things go

Every sim update has had graphics load changes. I recommend re-verifying settings with each update, at least until Asobo has finished shunting loads across hardware with each update.

I think you will find vsync at 30 helps.

Flying from the Oregon coast to St Louis this morning. Encountered some clouds. Had to drop my render scaling a notch to keep my latency under 32ms. Just a heads up, flying through clouds affects GPU load quite a bit.

I have found clouds, especially upper level wispy stuff extremely hard on frames on Ultra. This started for me during the beta of SU6. I knocked them down to High and it has pretty much resolved it, with minimal graphical change.

This is the first long flight I have had time to finish in weeks. Realizing now it has been some time since I checked some other scenery areas to verify my own numbers.

Ended the flight with LODs set to 175 and render scale at 65% of 4k in the Baron around St. Louis. I have my in-game vsync set to 30 again, and will keep it that way from here on out.

Reducing render scale for the clouds forced me to reduce LODs further to stay GPU limited.

maybe this can help

I got a new PC 2 weeks ago, i5-11400, 16GB, 3060Ti 8GB, and downloaded MSFS. My initial resolution and FR were both very good, with a balance between main thread utilization and GPU utilization showing in the dev toolkit, until about a week ago.

I don’t know if it was a kerfluffle with sim hotfixes or what, but all of a sudden my FPS on the ground went down to 2-4fps and the toolkit showed main thread limited, with frequent spikes to 300+ms.

Until I found this thread, it was unflyable, but last night I used the system recommended here and got flying again with 32ms GPU utilization.

But. To do so I had to turn terrain LOD down to 10! Object LOD didn’t have much of an impact.

Before this hiccup, I was running terrain LOD 100, Object LOD 150 and it was smooth. All the other GPU settings have been able to be run at Ultra.

I wonder what happened? I didn’t do any system changes (same version of nVidia driver as before).

This method of tuning is outstanding! Thanks!

I’m starting to think that a windows update has caused some issues for people, you’re not the first person I’ve seen posting about degrading performance.

Start by making sure your OS is healthy. Run DISM and SFC (easily find instructions in google), make sure all drivers are updated (EXCEPT THE LATEST ONE FROM NVIDIA), and see what that does for you.

Also, check for background processes. Anti virus software, backups, things running in the system tray that don’t need to, etc.

Don’t underestimate the power of a backup running either. If your PC is scheduled to run backups at a certain time, and misses one, it will run again as soon as it can to complete the backup, eating your entire CPU along the way, especially if you have an NVME drive.

The tricky part about a backup running is that they don’t show up in the task manager as “backup”. It will just show high system utilization combined with heavy disk usage.

Anti virus software will do the same “run again as soon as you can if missed” routine, but will at least show in task manager as a running app.

I’m sure this information will be rudimentary for a lot of people on this forum, but it never hurts to throw it out there. Sometimes the simple things are forgotten.

I must say that the lod method worked for me. unfortunately I had to turn it down to 10. I disabled the rolling cache and it magically improved by 10 fps. I was therefore able to raise the lod slightly

Hi guys, I’ve followed your precious advice and I reached a good balance and I’m constantly limited only by GPU. However, when I am on final, whatever airline I fly (A32N FBW, CS 777, Asobo 747, Bredok 737 Max) and whatever airport I am approaching, I get very annoying stutters that last until I reach my gate. Any advice to solve? My pc is i7-11700k, 3060Ti and 32 gb 3200 mhz.

There are a bunch of issues with poor performance introduced in the last few days and possibly linked to the live weather issue. Maybe wait for that to be solved to see if it’s your system or not. Annoying!

@Grabber523 Your explanation and advice were tremendously useful for me. Thank you so much for your technical guidance.

I have a AMD5700XT and Ryzen 7 and following by following your tips I had been able to tune to the most comfortable settings for CPU and GPU without unnecessary stressing the components, while maintaining good MSFS visuals and performance.

@ Citation1970

Hi,

and what settings you have? Report pls…

Look to my spec on profile, yesterday on some US areas with very foggy and Cloudy *HD resolution and no ULTRA settings, some different as HIGH) I have 60FPS without problems

Awesome, glad to hear it!

Just a heads up, since writing this guide, I have done a lot more research into the effect traffic has on CPU latency, and lowered all of my traffic sliders from 100 to 15.

My setup is much more tolerant of larger airports because of it.

Follow the steps in this thread. Using someone else’s numbers for your rig is not going to get you where you want to be, because everyone’s setup performs differently.

My guide is designed so that everyone, no matter what hardware they are using, can find their own settings.

Yes agree,

as I reported my thoughts long time before, hard to help with this kind of problem…

aaah I see now your recommendations, I agree absolutelly!

I can confirm @Grabber523 guide definitely works!

It changed my experience immensely!

Since this thread has been resurrected, and a lot of changes have happened both to my rig (HUGE new monitor!) and the latest sim update, I thought I would post my latest settings.

I want to stress again, that these numbers are ONLY FOR REFERENCE, and should not be blindly followed, as your system will perform differently!

Where is your thread explaining these settings?
