I have quite an annoying issue. When flying for 2+ hours, performance during descent and arrival is simply terrible. When a little further (±20 miles) from the airport, I experience some freezes. (2 sec stutter every 2-3 minutes). At 100ft or lower my sim starts to stutter a lot. Touchdown always results in a lag. Sometimes even up to 4 sec. When I roll on the runway a bit, performance is back to normal. (locked 38fps) . One additional thing I noticed: Even though fps are back to normal after touchdown, my sim starts to run really slow when it comes to shut it off. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes to quit .
I tried everything that I could find. (excluding regedit and some suspicious tricks)
*Reinstalled drivers and disabled nvidia geforce,
*adjusted settings in the sim (LOD reduced by 20, some other settings like water quality tweaked),
*took a lot of time to optimize my system. (Benchmarks show, that performance went up by 8% and my PC is now more efficient than the others with exact the same components (93 percentile)
*disabled rolling cache
*took advices from a forum like deleting all simconnect files.
And a couple of more minor tweaks.
My PC specs:
I5-9400F,
RTX-2070,
16GB RAM,
SSD.
I mainly use PMDG 737 and General Aviation aircraft. Jets are the problem, GA birds don’t cause any troubles. I have 2 external apps running in the background. vPilot and FsRealstic.
My settings are set to high with a few exceptions. E.g. clouds ultra. (Stutters occur even though clouds are absent, so that’s not the case)
The weirdest thing is that my FPS are great when taking off or cruising. (FlyTampa EKCH, 30-38 [locked]FPS)
It seems there is a trigger zone near the airport to start loading airport assets, ground vehicles, signs people, etc… That initial load in seems to kill FPS. After they have loaded in fps the stabilizes. Addons seem to compound this issue, even if they aren’t at the airport. I was having major stutter issues recently and killed a few scenery addons and everything stabilized. Added one of them back and I had a 5-15 FPS drop and more at the airport. I can still notice the FPS drop at the airport trigger spot but it doesn’t impact my flying.
I recommend finding a very short test route from an airport that you can leave fly around a dense area and land again. Every time you add something test that route again and watch for FPS impact.
I’m going to do this again after SU10 Official so I know which addons to keep on all the time and which ones to use sparingly.
Yes this is really annoying. My current workaround for that problem is turning down LOD to 50 just before touchdown. During flight I turn it back up to 200.
I think the only way Asobo can fix this is by implementing dynamic LOD.
I’ve tried to remove every other scenery with no results. Performance during approach is still horrible. It looks like addons LOD is broken. MSFS doesn’t catch up to load everything. Should I upgrade my GPU, add another 16gb of ram or this is CPU related?
Try lowering all the default airport scenery in settings to 0 to remove all the airport scenery loading as you get into proximity of an airport. If that fixes it, then gradually increase the sliders back until it’s at an acceptable balance of performance.
I guess maybe I found the reason: you have too many aircraft addons. because your third party aircraft has become a part of the default airport scenery (airport vehicles, ground aircraft, workers.). loading these high quality aircraft models make you stutter, so just set ground aircraft to 0-10 or set traffic variety to low / medium, then the problem is solved perfectly. (for me)
Dude, I had a ■■■■■■ processor before and yet I’d never had a problem in 3 years, but for the past few months, it’s been horrible… My game runs really well, in high/ultra between 35-80 fps (depending on the zone) and landing at nice = 40 FPS but I have freezes… it drives me crazy.
Yeah Its not your Hardware problem its defo on Asobos End they dont care about the performance updates. Users who has like a 4070 and the best and Expensive hardware they dont got problems because msfs only works best with the best hardwares it really ■■■■ me of that they cant fix any problems for me its done with MSFS I am only waiting for the new 2024 sim
Hi @FlyingPaul ,
Stuttering is unfortunately quite common. The reasons are varied: hardware, MSFS configuration, addons, your choice of aircraft & the location at the time of the stutters (e.g. airport), whether flying in one of the newer WU or CU areas (they have higher fidelity & so put a greater demand on your hardware), etc…
Searching for “stutters in:title” brings up many topics on this subject that might help you, depending upon your specific circumstances.
Running a 4090 13900k and I’m still experiencing stutters on landing- sometimes truly sim or plane breaking ones right in the last 200ft. Pretty frustrating. Traffic is most likely the largest contributer. Wish Asobo could do some tweaking for live traffic.
I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to share that I solved this by buying a new SSD drive and moving my game files over to it through steam, and also the community folder manually, I no longer experience stutters - especially upon touchdown. So if you are experiencing stutters and are using an HDD drive, then consider moving it to an SSD card.
I’ve been playing msfs on a HDD for the last four years and was oblivious to the difference of having it on an SSD. The game used to take 5 minutes to load up, now in less than a minute. Loading into an aircraft took 2-3 minutes, now its less than a minute. Injecting FSLTL caused huge stutters and now its seamless. Hope this helps.
Hi @curiousmax1407,
Thanks for posting this.
I have MSFS on a HDD. Stuttering becomes noticeable when the Disk Queue length >5.
You can read my various comments about this if you search for disk queue length @SmotheryVase665
With recent reports (in online videos of the Sep 19th Grand Canyon Event) of increased reliance of the Rolling Cache in MSFS 2024, using a SSD rather than a HDD would be, IMO, a wise decision.
Yes, the fenix is one of the smoother planes IMO. Re FSR FS2020 landing is incredibly lifeless without it. My remedy currently is- increased to 64gb ram, and locked my frames to half with FG enabled. Seems to have made a big difference.
