I did a performance comparison of SU3 beta v1.5.18.0 versus the current SU2 non-beta v1.4.20.0. It was a basic free flight in 4k with the F/A-18 taking off from JFK, flying a straight line over Manhattan and then landing at Newark (click on my gamer pic for my system details).
In this test, the SU3 beta has an average fps slightly less than the current SU2 release which is most likely within the margin of error. However, the test also shows the SU3 beta was a little smoother which was noticeable (see the smaller variances in frame times).
Let me know if you want any other details on my settings.
My test compared performance with only a very generic slice of the sim:
No ATC
No weather
No multiplayer
No VR
So like I said above, it was just a basic free flight. However, with regards to just performance, it did show the two versions were very similar.
At this point I’m preferring SU3 as it was noticeably smooth and I like the new frame limiter option. Overall, I can get very good performance by setting a frame limit of 65-72fps, double it with FSR3 frame gen and be within the capabilities of my 144Hz freesync monitor. Short approaches, take offs and on the ground at most mid-large airports are still problematic with stutters though.
I’m pretty happy with SU3 as well! I actually set my frame limit to 30FPS and double it with frame gen. Have a good PC but with these settings I can keep most of the settings on high/ultra and things look good and are smooth. Also, since the machine is not working that hard, the fans are quiet and very few hiccups.
I’m randomly experiencing CTD with SU3 beta. It seems random, could be immediately upon starting a flight, could be not at all, could be all the time. Haven’t been able to crack that code yet.
Anyone else having problems, its unfortunate because otherwise, it runs really smoothly.
I am afraid nothing is significant. I still have this fps cut half although what triggered it is rapidly changing DLSS to TAA in the menu (I was experimenting with something). The VRAM usage itself does not exceed my VRAM capacity, and the CPU was not overheating. It’s just a bug on their end.
However, in general, this SU Beta is pretty solid IMO, with or without the new LOD curve
After doing the performance test above I flew around New York city in 4k HDR10 at 4096x2160 using FSR3 anti-aliasing at quality with everything at ultra and I don’t remember vram usage going over 15.5GB. I do have a 7900xtx gpu with 24GB vram and for the most part have never had any issues with exceeding the physical vram.
I do have another PC with a 7700xt gpu with 12GB of vram and have had it’s vram limit briefly exceeded at large airports but it always recovered. Ymmv!
Great comparison, and if I read it correctly it shows what most - incl. me - are seeing:
SU3 1.5.18 is (slightly) worse in every of the metrics and also has more FPS dips and stutters.
Edit: I know it’s still beta… but I still find it somewhat shocking… every game I know received patches to potentially improve performance over time. Only FS (they also had that in 2020) is experimenting and getting worse results as it goes forwards as it seems I had really high hopes for the fresh start in FS2024 “from ground up”… but that is slowly draining with every month.
Whilst this is great for PC users, performance on SU3 beta is significantly worse on Xbox when compared to public release SU2, as you will see from the Xbox performance threads. The sim is currently rather non functional for those on Xbox who wish to fly anything bigger than a GA aircraft and this was not the case previously.
I wasn’t optimistic when I first heard FS2020 would be released for both PC and Xbox. It never really made sense to me. Yes, Microsoft owns both the title and the Xbox platform, but it still feels unfair to the Xbox community to deal with limitations and issues that PC users generally don’t face—aside from the usual complaints.
ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-PLUS
Intel Core i9 10900KF (3.5GHz)
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB (driver version 576.80)
64GB DDR4-3200
Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
Asus VG27AQL1A 2560x1440 @ 165 mHz
I am asking because on my AMD system basically all 25.x driver versions causes such crashes. So after a quick “new driver install - test - crash” I always have to revert back to v24.12.1 … which so far is still without any driver crashes (under SU2).
So … perhaps the crash you are seeing might not be a SU3 thing.
The problem is that it does work on Xbox - but only as Microsoft Cessna Simulator. There is absolutely no indication that Airliners are almost unusable. They are all there, with all the same features as on PC, and complete with marketplace liveries for us to spend even more money on them. And of course now the highly anticipated A350 to add to the mix which is great - if you like stop motion
FS2020 runs great on the series X. PMDG 777 flying into hand crafted airports with no issues (although I did get my first CTD in months yesterday). But when they said that the ground was going to be 4000X more detailed in FS24, I immediately thought “uh oh” and I wasn’t wrong
That is the best comparison of the sims I have seen anywhere. Good job.
Would love to see the same thing done in VR. But, so far, my VR flights in C172 from JFK and down the Hudson in 1.4.20 only last about five minutes before the visuals become so bad I have to quit.
