I have always assumed the off screen terrain pre-cache setting would address this, but I’m not sure if anyone has definitively proved how well that works.
You could be right. I noticed that the default presets seem to have lowered this by 1, suggesting that having it set too high has negative impact…
I’m on “High” settings and the pre-cache is at “Medium”.
I think the stuttering while panning in external view is over PG areas… I was over Flagstaff and it happened. I just tried again over the desert and it seemed less. So there is some variability.
That is 100% correct. I also remember in the past when I reset my graphics settings back to default it would set it to High-End and my pre-cache was set to High. Now when reset to High-End the pre-cache is set to Medium. When I then set it to high I get the stutters in PG areas that I reported in my bug report a while back. At some point in SU5 beta they made that change and I have to question their reasoning.
I think the issue is not the caching, but how it tries to load a whole bunch of stuff at once causing a stutter, instead of serializing a flow to prioritize NOT stuttering, even if it then loads the objects more gradually. That would be more graceful, and a much better experience. If my assumption is right (… is often wrong!)
Xbox series X
I deleted MSFS FROM Xbox, opted into the flighting, and downloaded the game + update.
-
Started the sim, and disabled almost all third party content (all except a few aircraft and airports)
-
Graphics settings untouched/default
-
Restarted sim
-
First flight CTD after loading on ground at airport.
-
Second flight CTD after loading on ground at airport
-
Third flight CTD after loading on ground at airport.
-
Fourth flight, loaded in and was able to look around the cockpit. But with massive stutters, worse than public SU5. Every texture seemed to pop in and out of nowhere from the tiniest camera movement. Decided not to go fly.
From my very brief experience tonight on a PC based system, I experienced no better and no worse. For me, that’s comforting, because that means nothing in PC got messed up in the push to fix the problems from Xbox and PS5 users. I did not fly, just ground tested. Free flight, 747-8F at YBBN. Live weather with Active Sky enhancement. MS Store version. Navigraph suite and Pushback Express present and functional. 9800x3d, XFX7900xt (undervolted) on ASUS 1440p 32 in curved monitor @165 hz, 32G mem, (2) 4TB NVME. (Sorry, but I was once accused of not being transparent, won’t let that happen again.
)
Caveats: I had to use Task Manager to end the process as fs was loading the first time. The second time, the welcome screens were awfully stuttery. I suspect that was because of new material. Once I got to the loading screen, things smoothed out. I’m breathing a sigh of relief. I’ll be flying to Hong Kong or Singapore or Haneda to put the system to the test. We’ll see.
The stutters seems to be a bit better but still there. I have a 9950x3d with 5090 and a96gb ram. Stutters are still present, I suddenly see a drop in gpu loading and everything just becomes very laggy and visual even stutters on the ground at heavy airport like EGLL. Taking off I am seeing a bit of a better performance but it’s still not smooth.
I was on the su5 beta and the version prior to release was super normal and smooth, not sure what changed with the release version.
Xbox X SU5.1 Beta
Clean Install, New Rolling Cache
My Standard Specs, as this was the baseline that worked flawlessly in SU4: Live Traffic and Weather enabled and Photogrammetry enabled.
I test large airliners at large airports,1st and 3rd Party as this sets a high standard that pushes the Xbox to its capabilities.
Unfortunately, SU5.1 does little to improve or return the performance and stability metrics of MSFS2024 to the level of SU4.
I’ve tested the iniBuilds A350 on a KLAX-KSFO turn and the iniBuilds Tristar at KATL. The screenshots below show all the evidence we need to see. SU5.1 continues to mirror that of SU3, quickly draining memory during a session and never recovering the consumed VRAM. Memory management continues to fail quickly from the start of a session. Ex) By the time I landed at KSFO from KLAX (appx 40 minutes of flight time), the ramp textures were just one giant blob, unreadable.
Here are a few of my experiences this evening:
- Loading in the A350 at the default RJTT we are immediately met by disabled avionics.
- Arriving at the gate in KLAX from KSFO and already the VRAM memory has drained. This is supposed to be the flight deck of the A350…it can’t even load properly.
- Loading the iniBuilds Tristar at KMIA on the ramp, immediately met with no avionics.
- I managed to get into the flight deck of this iniBuilds Tristar at KATL….but before I can even turn on the batteries….no avionics….
- Attempting to load into the iniBuilds A350 at KLAX to do the KSFO turn….it was not to be….no avionics.
- Even as our Tristar flight loads into KATL we already see that we won’t be getting avionics to fly in this flight session….
–While this is a step in the right direction, it is by no means an improvement of what console users have been dealing with since the release of SU5. I hope these reports and the telemetry gathered from the consoles themselves help improve and remedy this in future builds as we saw and lived in with SU4. Let’s remind ourselves that these low memory warnings never appeared on the Xbox prior to the introduction of SU5, pointing to the flawed memory threading technique introduced in this latest Sim Update. It simply doesn’t work on the Xbox’s shared CPU/GPU.
I still worry that there is little to no in-house testing on the Xbox…..it took me a mere 10 minutes to test this build and see the same results as before…
I continue to hold a high bar and hope for better things to come…

okay thank you. i tried that just inside by the msfs settings yet. But now it´s working. Thank you!
Xbox Series X. Downloaded the update and cleared the rolling cache and set a new one at 16gb. I’m having the same experience as other Xbox users unfortunately. I tried loading into default Heathrow in the A350 and A340 and had a CTD 3 times out of 4. The few times I was able to load into Heathrow, I was met with massive stutters and low memory warnings. Virtually no improvement from the public build for me. Would be happy to get SU4 back at this point so I can use my aircraft that I paid for, even if it’s just Xbox and Playstation users go back to SU4 until SU5 is in a better state than it is now. Right now it feels like 24 is back to the same state as it was 12 months ago.
Using a tobii 5 head tracker, the stuttering and flicking back and forth inside the cockpit since this latest update has made 2024 unplayable again for me.
I have no Community mods, have cleared all the caches and have tried the supposed fix of resetting / reassigning my controllers but it has not resolved the issue for me.
Since I bought 2024 on release, there has probably been two months where it worked properly and was actually an upgrade over 2020. Am back on the older sim for now until this stuttering is addressed.
My stress test is landing at inibuilds egll with high settings preset including msfs live traffic. 5090 9800x3d 64 gb ram. Vsync on at 1/3 screen refresh of 120fps. Unfortunately repeated approaches were very poor with increasing stutters as I touched down and rolled out. No freezes, I never get them, but a multitude of small stutters ruining the experience. One day I’ll be able to enjoy simming at large busy airports like egll with sensible settings but seemingly that day is still as far off as its ever been.
Totally agree with this post -especially re lack,of testing on Xbox which I think is an unacceptable situation - in the store MSFS2024 is advertised as being a game that is optimised for Xbox. It isn’t. It never has been, It needs to be.
First test was a gentle one - just comparing PMDG B777-200LR performance against SU5. EGLL-CYYC.
Scrolling around flight deck in the beta didn’t feel quite as smooth as in SU5 but the quantity of sound cutouts had improved - I only had one.
Taxi out to runway was perhaps slightly improved over SU5… take off wasn’t as smooth as SU4 - that kind of variable speed scrolling of textures that stops you feeling the sensation of speed properly.
Some stutters banking round on departure - nothing horrible but not as good as we had in SU4..
Will try the 1011 - which for me wouldn’t load at EGLL as memory warning straight away.
There may be a few small improvements here , am still evaluating, but first impressions are that this hasn’t been tested on a real Xbox. It’s a shame.
Another thing to note as well is that once again PMDG aircraft seem to still work fine as they are better optimised and use less memory. Inibuilds aircraft such as the A350 and A340 are the ones I’m having big problems getting to work. The nose gear in the A350 takes a good minute or so to load in and then once it does, the aircraft seems to power up ok and things are smoother. Not sure if the problem lies with the sim or just those particular aircraft. I noticed there were updates for both aircraft released the other day focusing on performance improvements. Unfortunately, it could be a week or more before we see them on Xbox.
My first flight in this build, with the latest WHQL AMD driver, as reported here, was not so good.
Reverting to an earlier version of the AMD driver returned performance to what I was seeing in SU5, as reported here.
I try to stay with the same GPU driver through any Beta, so since SU5 had been released, I updated to the latest version from AMD last night. This caused a noticable decrease in performance on my PC. Just based on my experience described in my two posts, some of the stuttering issues PC users are having may be driver-related rather than with MSFS 2024.
I think that’s right based on my experience.
To me it shows that some third party developers - like PMDG - do a great job optimising their products for Xbox customers, others don’t.
And it also shows very clearly that MS/Aosbo could - and need - to do a lot better in this regard. I know I sound like a scratched record here, but I believe it would benefit everyone a great deal were they to spend some time and attention on better optimisation.
It’s been like that since day one of MSFS 2024.
Unfortunately, the release notes don‘t mention the (logged) bug that has turned the the walk-around mode in VR into an annoying experience: click spots to remove covers or chocks are no longer clickable.
More stutters than SU5 stable. No improvement in VRAM management. All caches cleared before and rebuild. Back to SU5 stable.
Could be just the first run(s) ? Rebuilding shaders and such ?
I think i saw the same in the first few rounds. Seems to got smooth afterwards and pretty much on par with the live version. But i guess need more time to be certain…
