SU8 superb in VR

Congratulations on Sim Update 8 Beta - in VR it is working very very well especially with volumetric lighting and look and feel. Yes a few small bugs but overall much much better!

I’ve been VR Simming’s since the beginning with both this sim and others.

Well done on such impressive performance and such a great sim!

I think it’s come along way, but I truly believe those that are having issues are not sim related but rather spec and set up related.

Since Update 4 we have had to deal with a lot of issues related to VR including loss of lighting, volumetric lighting, look and feel and LOD issues, those issues have slowly been ironed out with a few more to go.

3 big important topics!

  1. Use updated drivers
  2. Make sure your settings match your specs
  3. Even with a 1080 you can get great VR so don’t despair

There are so many good :+1: guides out there.

Have the inconsistencies on the right eye in reflections, lighting, and shadows, particularly the horrible one eye ghosting when flying through clouds, finally been fixed?

Ever had that

I disagree it’s “superb” in SU8 beta;

  • Mouseover toolbar issues that prevents controls/HOTAS working is still not fully fixed from SU7.
  • A new bug that resets all toolbar Windows to their default position if you change cameras, incredibly annoying

It’s a step backwards for me, yet another disappointing step backwards. This was supposed to be an update to fix bugs, they’ve failed to fully rectify one game breaking issue and now they’ve added another, it simply is not good enough for a paid product to be constantly regressing with such obvious bugs.

Let’s wait and see if they fix anything during this beta period, but my personal hope is now completely non existent with Asobo and their attention to fix VR.

do you know meaining “beta” ??.. if yes, wait for realese version

Hang on, you can’t say that until the beta has gone live? Did you report all the issues you found?

I saw the thread title and immediately thought “yea right😒”

the reason why you are having problems could be down to a number of issues related to your set up and settings… With many trying to overclock and change parameters it makes for a mess in any sim. I have tested so many different settings and variables I have come to the conclusion that nothing beats VR, but VR certainly is not as refined or defined as 2D graphic settings, but is slowly getting there. This has certainly been the best we have had up until now. As I have said before one mans castle is another mans shack!

Yes I’ve been part of betas for many games & Sims before, I was part of the SU7 beta Patch and that failed to fix the serious issues properly.

The beta went live last week, yes I have reported the issues as have many others, now there is zero indication that these bugs will get fixed for the public release just like during the last beta.

No, these problems area universal for everyone, they are on Asobos side.

The fact the rudders lock out still is annoying, but no where near as annoying as the throttle and stick/yoke… so while yes it should be fully fixed it is still a significant progress towards a solution, so not one I would say is a step backwards. Sometimes these issues are not as straightforward as they might appear from the outside, and progress is progress.

The other one is not an issue that affects me personally, so can’t comment but disappointing they always manage to unintentionally throw some sort of new issue in there. It does seem there is a lack of QA particularly in the VR aspect.

I’ve not had a huge amount of flying in SU8 yet but generally experience has been good. Except for when I tried DX12 that is!

SU8 is ultimately in beta, so while I would agree there is minimal chance of either of those two issues being fixed before release from prior experience (eg they didn’t fix the massively impactful VR toolbar interaction from SU7 beta to SU7 release) we can’t ultimately say that 100% until it is, in fact, released.

The step backwards point is that these were never issues prior to SU7, if they don’t fix the issues this update then that’s 6 months from SU7 to a possible fix in SU9 for a regression bug, that’s simply not good enough.

This simply isn’t a great update yet. If it were I would be all over these forums praising it.
I’ll give it time.
@MarcG888 also has a great grasp on VR tweaking and being sensitive to slight changes in MSFS VR performance with updates, I’ll certainly take his word anytime over most and he has already stated the issues we are experiencing as they are so blatantly obvious they can’t be ignored.
Glad you are enjoying the new patch by your standards but we can agree to disagree about it being great so far. :beers:

Yeah just to clarify I’m all for people enjoying it if they can (I still can and do), if you personally think it’s good enough for your own personal needs than that’s great. I only really responded in this thread as it is - my opinion - that the current SU8 Beta Build is far from “superb”.

Having been around VR since 2016 I’ve grown to notice every tiny detail in changes, be that in HMD Software, nVidia Drivers or VR Game updates themselves. This current Beta, for me, is another disappointment after many disappointments associated with these Devs. It started when announced MSFS in the first place - there was no sign of VR support, so the community had to rally around to put pressure on them to add it, which they did reluctantly by some accounts. Then the VR update came along, it was bare bones but at least it was something, but then radio silence - no new features or advancements followed until SU5 which was a massive step backwards graphically (the clouds in VR are still worse than pre-SU5), then SU7 introduced New game breaking issues that have still not been dealt with sufficiently or quickly enough plus this new one with the toolbar windows resetting…how on Earth did that get through internal testing & Quality Control? Easy answer on the latter as there is no internal QC as past Updates have proven time & time again throughout the Sim not just in VR.

My utter frustration about all of this is out of a massive “want” for this Sim to evolve as it moves along, not just in VR but all over. Currently it’s far from doing that, having been involved with countless “consistently developing titles” over the years I have never known one to regress as much as this one. The main concern I’ve had and continue to have is that Asobo just haven’t got much of a clue about VR, they continually allow big bugs to pass through internal testing and then theres absolutely no urgency thereafter to fix the the bugs that they created. As it stands - and I stress again in my opinion - VR is in a worse state now than it was at release.

Of course I want things to improve, but I have little faith of that when the evidence points blatantly to a lack of understanding, a severe lack of direct developer communication (pointing at the Beta Update Forums here) and above all a lack of respect to VR users. If I’d bought any other product that slowly got worse through updates over time I’d be demanding a refund or a chat with the Manager, things are different in the gaming world though - so I’m stuck waiting for a miracle to happen and boy do I hope it happens!

Well,
you know that the devs could just decide to not implement any VR in the game, as it was not planned in the first place? Only a minority of users have a VR headset in the player community, they didn’t owe you anything in my opinion, but they still did implement VR in their game, and i’m not sure it was reluctantly.
I totally agree with you on certain points, which can generate frustration, but saying the devs are lacking respect for VR users, or don’t know VR, etc. is just showing anger. VR is probably just not a priority for them, it is sad, but there is nothing else to say about imo, you don’t need to follow that angry path!
Many things not linked to VR are also broken or showing regressions btw in the updates

I do hope as well things get addressed sooner than later.

Have to agree wholeheartedly.
That’s exactly what I’ve experienced and exactly what I’m afraid of.

One reason they keep regressing is that they didn’t plan for VR honestly. It was an add-on. An afterthought. It means however every time they want to improve something in VR it has unintended consequences with some other system (say the toolbar, or the buttons, or the legacy button mode) that they never expected. I suppose you could argue that if they had implemented VR fully all along it would have slowed the initial release. I’m just glad they are improving things at any pace as so many games stopped (I’m looking squarely at you Frontier: Elite Dangerous).
