A lot of folks starting out in FS2020 come from FSX background or even earlier, some since 1995
Now there is a option to switch to legacy flight model mode but what about an option to quickly toggle and switch to the legacy FSX/etc key mappings?
It took me half an hour to figure out how to release parking brakes, another half a hour to figure out how to cycle between cameras and several hours to remap all the keys back to the way they were
I agree that the default key mappings leave a little to be desired - in that itās not obvious what a lot of them are without hunting around through the menus. Iāve yet to see āEndā be the external/internal camera key in a sim; most sims over the years have used the F-keys for view (except FSX, its predecessors and X-Plane). Yet some of the unusual (in my opinion) legacy assignments remain, like F1-F4 for throttles and F5-F8 for flaps.
But like you, my initial flight involved some time trying to discover what the camera and parking brake keys were!
That said, I turned off all assists when first launching the game. If I hadnāt, perhaps the game would have suggested/reminded to turn off the parking brake using the relevant key command, if I had tried to taxi with them enabled? Iām not sure, just a thought. Newer users might not face the same challenges as some of us long-term users
I donāt imagine they would implement a toggle to switch between default & legacy key mappings, but Iām pleased that they have implemented āprofilesā for each controller, as you may know. Any time you map a custom button on a controller it will prompt you for a profile name. It appears you can map multiple layouts to a controller. I havenāt checked, but perhaps you can do this with the keyboard too, if you wish to have different layouts. In which case, Iām sure a community-created ātraditionalā layout can be shared with users that want it.
Next up, I hope we see aircraft-specific profiles to aid with switching from single-engine to multi-engine. I know it was already posted in another wishlist thread.
Id just suggest getting familiar with the new setup, i find its very intuitive and far more functional then X in nearly every way.
Took me around 10 hrs of diligently checking hotkeys for things but now that ive got the hang of it (still learning) i prefer it, well accept the camera keybinds i set those up similar to Xplane.
