Surprising performance on older hardware. All Ultra Settings

In my humble opinion, chasing higher FPS isn’t always the solution to a smooth judder and stutter free experience, especially for those with older systems.

My focus is on Consistent Inter Frame Timing and giving the CPU time between screen refreshes to finish it’s tasks.

Here is what can be achieved with a 5 year old 2080ti on a triple display system using all ultra settings. (See the attached videos) There is no stutter in the original video.

3 simple settings give surprising results. Those with faster GPUs might adopt related settings based on my approach and may be able to up all their settings to Ultra as well.

The 3 steps are as follows …

1 - Set your desktop refresh rate to 60hz in the nVidia Control Panel (even if you have a high hz monitor)
2 - Enable FSR3 framegen in the sim.
3 - set Rivatuner (the tool that comes with the free MSI Afterburner app) to “Scanline Sync x/2” to 1.

3b - Alternativelty (with slightly less impressive results) Set the nVidia Control panel v-sync to “ON” for 60fps, or “Adaptive Half Refresh” for 30 fps. !! (stay with me on this)

Give this a try and let me know how things went. Don’t use any other settings that limit the framerate.

My GPU runs fullscreen(s) at 51c and 38% with these settings.

The video shows a PMDG737 at EGLL (Heathrow) with AI enabled. This is a high stress location. Note: compression introduces some stutter which is not in the original video.

Obviously I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but this is a great example of how different users have different expectations/standards out of their sim. I’m happy you’re happy with how it’s running, but you’re also running at a very low resolution and only achieving 15FPS natively (doubling to 30FPS with frame gen, which in many users’ eyes will look poor given the true base frame rate).

I just think it’s important to put these things into perspective but, again, it’s great that you’re enjoying the sim!

Thanks Zadma, I appreciate and respect your opinion.

My 2.5K quad display system is actually doing about 25fps before framegen bumps it to 50, and then I trim it externally back to 30 to give the CPU some breathing space. I believe this is the critical element that eliminates judder or jitter.

IMHO, I’d rather have my 5 year old system at all Ultra settings doing 30fps vs 120fps at medium to high along with a maxed out credit card.

I hope my post isn’t being interpreted as some sort of shallow boasting. I am trying to demonstrate how these settings have worked for me, and the reason for my post is to help others who might like to try the same.

I’m hoping that my post will foster some creative ideas for others with older systems. Even someone with a 4K display and a 5090 who still can’t run all Ultra because of stutter.

Cheers.
