TDS or PMS50 GTN 750

almost feels like having both tds and pms can have its moments, pms for some radar / nexrad storm ils fun i guess, and the other for every other situation.

I like having that nexrad feature, unless there is another addon that can replicate nexrad view and still use tds for gps

Before you could use the TDS in gauge mode (and pop out its windows), I used to run it in standalone mode on an external touch screen, and run the PMS in the virtual cockpit. That way, I could get weather radar and Nexrad working on the PMS, and have the more advanced Trainer running the newer GTNXi to control my plane. It was kind of a “best of both worlds” thing.

Speaking of TDS and charts, it did update this last week to chart data from December 2022.

I know this is a silly one, but besides weather for gtn750, I want one of the music options, even if it means just having my own playlist that is activated with SiriusXM option of the gtn. TDS is fantastic, running with realsimgear “panel”

maybe – for $19 / month for a Sirius XML subscription for your GTN730 :scream:

or

Just take your Phone or portable MP3 player with you when you fly :+1:

I wonder what option you would go for ??

 I just like touching “buttons” on the gtn and having them do things. Not so much about the tunes, just the imersive experience…

A bit late to this topic, but can you have both the free version of the PMS50 and the paid LMS GTN750 installed simultaneously ?

I’m thinking in terms of the Black Square Analog planes (Baron, Bonanza, Caravan, King Air). Via
switches on the right side of the cockpit, they offer several avionics options to include the GTN750, but I’m not sure which one it would use if both were present.

I like having the free PMS50 installed for a simple reason: when flying a plane with the G1000NXi, it’s a pain to use knobs or the little keyboard icon to type in waypoints for a flight plan. With the PMS, I can pop out the panel from the top menu of the sim, type the flight plan in ala the G3000/5000, and it auto-syncs with the G1000. I’m guessing that the TDS doesn’t have this capability.

I haven’t bought the TDS yet, but seriously thinking about it…

just wondering is both the TDS and PMS version of the 750 having working traffic (TCAS) functions? (note I run MSFS with FS traffic)

from PMS50 dev:
Here is a list of features that you will find on our product (premium) and not in the TDS (as far as we know):

Full sim integration
Up to date navdata (sim or Navigraph)
Navigraph charts covers the entire world (requires the Navigraph subscription)
Small airports
Synchronization to the sim flight plan
Automatic loading of the world map flight plan
Synchronization between units (crossfill)
Weather radar
Nexrad
Real weather metar information
Sim traffic
Satellite and road maps (requires a free bing map key)
Fuel planning using aircraft sensor
Autopilot panel page
Toolbar panel version that allows using the GTN750 in nearly any aircraft and very useful in VR.
navigrah safe taxi map

Now you have the choice.

thanks for the reply

1)so any idea what “sim traffic” means - if I am running FS traffic does this mean the planes should
show up on the TCAS panel without any configuration or some other mod running in the background?

2)also I do sometimes fly VR but what does tool bar panel version mean - does it mean you can select the 750 from the standard MSFS toolbar that you can bring up at the top of the screen and does it require a different install from the standard premium version?

hi
1 - yes i would think so.- 2nd, for aircraft with no GTN in the cockpit itself you can load the gtn screen from the top. shoould work also in teh free ver (only free features ofc)
here is pms50 discord he knows better

So, how about this discussion now? Any new comparisons? I have pms50 but have a fear of missing out the other one.

I see that the TDS now can use Navigraph data instead of being stuck with their default US Only navdata. That is certainly a game-changer for this comparison.

That said, I finally invested in the premium PMS50 version a few months ago, and am very happy with it.

I’ve had the TDN version for ages but will switch to the PMS now that the price has reduced. As good as the TDS is, I want all the small airport/fields/strips that are missing in the TDS version, even with the added expense of Navigraph.

I was also torn between both for a while now.

Ran the PMS50 in the free version for quite some time and also tested the premium features including Navigraph on Thursdays. It´s a good device, especially with the current discount of 50 EUR for lifetime (including taxes). Don´t think you can really go wrong with it and I know some people who prefer the better integration with stock MSFS data and extra features over the immersion of the real trainer, and that´s absolutely ok.

However, I decided to go with the TDS yesterday despite being far more expensive at 65 EUR (excluding taxes, i.e. it was 77 EUR with VAT for me). I think TDS also should have a demo version for people who want to compare both devices. I do not regret the purchase so far and would go for it again (maybe not a final verdict, though, as I only did a few flights with it yesterday, but it felt way more natural and complete to me compared to PMS at the moment).

I knew the downside of missing smaller airports, something I only had a few times with Navigraph in the past, f.e. during my Caribbean tour with MUKW a few weeks ago. However, I could still go to the PMS free version for such areas/flights or enter missing airports manually into the Garmin, if it really should bother me.

So I guess I just prefer the immersion of the “real” Garmin device and any missing airport information could also be obtained either via PMS50 750, Navigraph Charts or LittleNavMap running on a second monitor/ in the sim panel / in the background. Also, I could easily remove NavDB frrom TDS in Navigraph HUB to default back to Garmin DB. And if the airport is still not in there, then it´s probably just an additional layer of realism, right…?

I’m a bit confused…I assumed that since the new TDS Pro Upgrade includes “Full Navigraph Support”, doesn’t that mean that every airport found in Navigraph is included and accessible in the GTN750? Maybe I’m just unclear on the underlying concept.

That would be my understanding as well assuming you have the Navigraph subscription that is.

I guess my question is are these smaller strips mentioned just not in the Navigraph data or is it because those users are not using the Navigraph data but the old Garmin data.

The Navigraph data will have all the airports included in the airac cycles, much more than are simply available in the Charts app.

But it will miss the unregistered strips as well as the ones the Asobo AI created (there is some overlap between the two).

Just thought of something else. If TDS has now figured out a way to use a different set of data then could it be possible to also allow use of the sim data as an option. The benefits being you can get all these missing airstrips from the sim and no Navigraph subscription required.

From a post over at avsim

“Did a quick check in LNM - if you search all airports in MSFS you get ~41k airports, use Navigraph for ALL features reduces that down to ~16k. Approximately 2000 of the airports not showing in Navigraph have runways over 5000ft in length.”

Most of the larger missing airfields appear to be military. There’s a link to a spreadsheet in this https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/642721-tds-gtnxi-pro-with-navigraph-support-released/?do=findComment&comment=5073122

I think GothicHeart77 sums up the differences quite nicely, absolute fidelity to the real thing with TDS Pro or near enough for many with the advantage of MSFS navdata for those that want it in the PMS. It’s great that there are options for both types of usage. As Sling380 says, it would be great if TDS taps into the MSFS database, but the dev rarely commits to adding features/functionality requests , just doesn’t rule them out.
