Terrible VR performance (but not always) what causes this?

Hey all
I have a problem with VR on my system. It was sometimes happening in MSFS2020… but now in MSFS2024, it’s way worse:
And that is that I very often just have like 5 fps or so. Completelly unplayable of course. But when I then leave VR and the sim switches back to 2D… the performance often then stays terrible.

When I just start the sim and hop into 2D mode… the performance is fine.
When I then start VR mode, it either stays smooth (sometimes), or it immediatelly gets really bad and can’t be restored.
SOMETIMES it recovers after a few minutes… but most of the time, if it’s that bad, I just have to reboot my system and try allover again and hope it works that time around.

Anyone having any ideas what this is? It’s almost like something is throtelling VR down, or some kind of service sometimes blocking it… or maybe a wrong Windows setting… no idea.
Windows 10, RTX 3070ti, HP Reverb G2.

Changing the VR settings does not help. Because again: SOMETIMES it just works smooth and fine.
And then on other trys, at the same location, same airport, etc., changing to VR just kills the performance (of both MSFS2020 or 2024)

Does anyone know what this is?

Kind regards

My VR performance in 24 (on a 7800x3D, 4090, 64GB) is also much worse than in 2020, and I also experienced the ultra low <5fps problem, BUT not in VR!

What happens is:

Start sim, menus are fine and smooth, as is 2D sim
Enter VR. Performance is worse than 2020 but is very stable and I can get 45fps locked if I tweak it right.
Leave VR. At this point, or a bit later after entering exiting VR again, I will get a constant 3-5fps in 2D ONLY, both in 2D sim and 2D menus, making them borderline unusable. What’s crazy is that entering VR again makes it run normal again, 45fps!
But going back to 2D again, it’s back to 3 fps. Crazy.

The 3fps seem to be caused by the GPU being completely overloaded for no reason, with frametimes of 100ms+.

The amount of bugs this sim has right now, especially in VR, is astounding. We have a long road ahead of us… So much for the “new platform” that they said VR now is. Ridiculous.

They clearly didn’t test it at all, how could they possibly miss the non-working VR Toolbar and the mouse bug, to name just a couple? Unbelievable and very disappointing.

What airplanes do you guys experience this in? I mostly experience it with airliners. And other planes that have many more of the systems simulated.

So far it’s never happened to me in GA planes

Were you using DX11 in 2020 ?

The VR performance in DX12 was never great, even in 2020, and it seems like DX11 is no longer an option in 2024 ?

Maybe we all need to get 5090s come January

I have the same problem and roughly the same rig as you, rtx3070, reverb g2… In my case it is sudden cpu overload for no appearant reason that causes the extreme drops. Also noticed that online traffic is a frame rate killer. Also dense areas have a much greater impact than in fs2020.

Going back and forth in 2d was never a good idea even in fs2020. It helped to shutdown de mr portal after returning to 2d.

I had the exact same thing in MSFS2020 when VR came out and I was using an AMD 6800XT GPU. It was random and the FPS was so low that I had difficulty in even getting the ESC key to function to get out of it, both in 2D and VR. Turned out it was a driver issue.

Now, years later I too am getting the dreaded unexplainable low FPS glitches, with CPU and GPU usage dropping to low levels on a 4090.

I suspect even the latest nVidia drivers, which are claimed to be MSFS 2024 ready, are only optimised for 2D and we may well have an issue there in VR.

Not sure its nvidia drivers related, got and 7900xtx and the performance are really bad in vr despite good numbers on flat screen.

I have the most of the bugs in VR told in this post, cannot belive that i am living again what happened 4 years ago ! with fs2020. What kind of respect is this for players ? didn’t they learned the previus lesson ? how could it be possible to fall again into hell like before ?

Same here . the VR experience its a dissaster . before switching, 60 constant, after switching . HELL ,

Just did a test flight. At medium in a non-city I have 79 … Over a city it drops to 50 with slutter. More than that when going to planes with G1000, G1000 appears to be very laggy (while it is fluid in non-VR). I tried the DA-40 and then when lanching VR I am on the back-seat ! Position is reinitialised everytime you go back to menu, menu toolbar diseapper (as reported), green spot flashing … So not a famous experience. Where cities are photogrammed, we do not have seasons there also, probably because trees are poart of the photogrametry…

Uff, I see… I’m not the only one.

Has anyone tried DLSS Swapper?

Does this work in VR? On RTX 30xx cards?

It’s explained here:

First it’s about the frame gen… then afterwards, the DLSS swapper…

Anyone tried one or both of these things with Reverb G2 in MSFS2024?
Any luck?

Framegen does not work in VR, copying the newest DLSS dll file over definitely makes using DLSS quality look better.

Ok thank you. So you would recommend the DLSS swapper tool? Or is there an other way to swap the DLSS file?

No, DX12 in 2020 for years, far superior performance than in 24 and much smoother than Dx11 for me.

True for WMR, but other HMDs were super stable switching between 2D and VR. And even with WMR I didn’t have any real issues.

I always use DLSS swapper to run the latest DLSS. Highly recommend it, will give you better image quality and gain you some fps.

Hey @PathlessSpore60
Ok thanks. And you mean this for VR, right? Because I use DLSS only in VR… So the benefit also works with WMR / G2?

I only ever use VR, so yes in VR. I have a Pimax Crystal.

2020 is sublime tonight - flawless
