Terribly bad performance since installing the sim again

Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?

I used developer mode to check my fps count but found no difference whether it is on or off.

Have you disabled/removed all your mods and addons? If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the Community Support section.

I have no addons installed. This is a fresh install.

Brief description of the issue:

Recently i reinstalled this sim again after a couple of months not simming, before it usually ran at a solid 40-60 fps with minimal drops, but to my surprise when i opened it again and started up a flight, the fps was horrible with it being in the 20s and consistently dipping below, the game also now freezes for about 15 seconds when i first load into an airport and the ground textures look terrible.

I tinkered with my settings and it appears that even at the lowest possible settings I still get horrible fps counts. It has been driving me insane and i have been trying to fix it all day. Even in the menu during a flight my fps stays in the 40s.

That kind of stuff is always difficult because there could be many reasons. A few questions you may want to think about:

  1. Did you change the GPU driver since you stopped using MSFS. There are times when newer drivers are actually a disadvantage. If you changed recently try to switch back to the one you were using before and make sure you completely deinstall the drivers with DDU first!
  2. Are you a Beta participant? Currently Beta SU 13 users complain a lot about stutters. FPS isn’t everything. The stutters are what make the experience horrible.
  3. You are extremely Main Thread limited. Meaning your CPU is currently a severe bottleneck. Simplified: the GPU currently can do its work much quicker and has to wait for the CPU and that causes the stutters.
So are there any additional programs running in the background that could negatively influence MSFS but which you don’t need in MSFS?
  4. What LOD settings are you running in MSFS (Terrain LOD is the biggest FPS killer and is almost exclusively handled by the CPU)?
Most of the other settings are taxing only for the GPU. You have to find some sort of equilibrium there. Best thing is, if your get the system to be GPU limited. I don’t think that’s easy with your system though.
  5. Have you had any problems with your internet connection lately? Try to check in you Router or Modem settings, whether you’re receiving the optimal performance. Problems with streaming data can lead to stutters as well.
  6. Do you use Rolling Cache? In case you didn’t before, try to deactivate it and see if that helps.
  7. Do you use DX11 or DX12? Here I’d recommend DX11. IMHO it’s more stable

I know my next tip won’t solve your issue - especially considering you say you had better performance before. (I must admit I have my doubts about the 40-60 FPS statement though. I wasn’t able to get that with my previous system which was considerably more powerful than yours.)

But my first instinct is to try to get you a faster CPU that can keep up with your GPU. You have an AM4 system, so if your motherboard is still compatible, the 5800X3D would be the optimal choice and give you a lot of headroom over the 2600X which is clearly being overtaxed. Also the 5800X3D is pretty affordable. Especially the X3D Technology has proven to be a godsent for MSFS.
Also some extra RAM won’t hurt. But that’s a secondary issue.

Hi @Maciekk06,

Firstly welcome to the Microsoft Flight Simulator forums!

Can you just confirm that you definitely do not have any addons installed and that your simulator is in a vanilla state? The reason I ask is that the screenshots you’ve posted show the Airbus A320NEO with an EFB, and also an EasyJet livery. Neither of these two elements are default within Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Hopefully trying some of the points posted above from Archer may help you!

Thanks,
The MSFS Forums Team

Yeah, I have been thinking of upgrading for a while, its just strange to me how much worse the performance had gotten since i last played, i’m not too sure how it ran so well with what i have. I did recently change my internet to a slower one but it should still be sufficient, I even tried turning off the online features to no avail, still thanks for the tips, i’ll try tinker about with it and see what I can do.

Thanks for the welcome! I forgot to mention the screenshots are after I installed the FBW A320 and Easyjet livery, that’s my bad I should have added that part, but before I installed those the problem was the same, I just kind of hoped it would fix itself after trying for a while, I’m gonna try some of Archer’s tips, thanks.

I don’t know if this is worth trying out for you but, try to go to your BIOS Settings and disable Intel Virtualisation Technology (or whatever AMD equivalent is). I find that this solves my FPS and Limited by Mainthread problem under any graphics settings.

Unfortunately that setting is already off, thought this would be the surefire answer lol.

Small update, I turned off the AI traffic and the sim runs smooth as butter now, it seems that is where the problem stems but i’m not sure why the traffic suddenly tanks my performance so much as before I even had traffic addons installed and it very minimally affected the performance.

Were you using Offline AI traffic or Live Traffic? Or FSLTL injected traffic? From my experience Offline AI traffic, especially at 100 slider populates the airspace and ground space so much they slow your performance down to a crawl.

But usually Live Traffic or FSLTL injected traffic doesn’t affect FPS that much.

I was using the online live traffic, my world is a bit empty now but i suppose i will have to make do until i upgrade my cpu i suppose.

Try to install FSLTL, the injector can be modified to give you as many or as little traffic as you want. So you can look for the sweetspot between not having an empty world vs playable performance.

Think ill give this a try, thanks, I remember using FSTL but i just thought it would make the situation worse in this case, worth giving it a try.

It´s not the traffic nor the addons nor your system but the current AAU2 patch. I just flew to Bora Bora (NTTM to NTTB) with Cessna Longitude, which is a default Asobo aircraft. There´s no AI traffic now and both are Asobo airports, with nothing around in 1000 miles except the ocean and a couple of islands next to Bora Bora, so performance is good in the range of 50 fps. However sim still freezes during several seconds and reproduces frequent hitching during flight and while panning camera, even on G-sync. If that happens by just rendering plain ocean imagine when you need to handle terrain elevation, textures and buildings…

But even at Bora Bora apron, cold and dark, with such a light scene to handle I´m still main thread limited (20 ms average), as if I was at Chicago, or as you, when you use a more complex airliner and all systems running in a more complex area in your case. That´s the magic of this game. Two systems in two different areas and with different settings configuration behave exactly the same. Both are limited when they should not be at all.

I’m also at the 30 FPS on any urban areas with big airports, even with traffic disabled an TLOD 200, when before the avionics updates I was on 45 FPS. If traffic is enabled no matter if you have 10 AIs or 350 AIs, performance hit makes you lose 10 FPS average (using generic models). That has been the same since game was launched.

Now I have a 12900ks + 4090 + 64GB RAM but just some weeks ago I had a 3080Ti with same bad results as today (10-15 FPS less than with SU12 and lots of hittching and freezing). This game version is simply broken. That´s the fact. SU10 to SU12 never reproduced such atrocious results. The avionics updates are the reason for the massive degradation. Main thread is being overloaded and that makes everything else work bad.

Cheers

Is anyone having connection issues on Xbox? I cant connect to any online services in game. My internet connection is good, did all the usual troubleshooting but still, no online services. Any help would be appreciated. Issue started yesterday.

I did think it could also be something to do with this update, if that is the case then i really hope they address these problems in the next patch. I love this sim but god can the updates completely break everything.
