So, normally when i fly with custom weather, i start the flight at the ramp with clear skies enabled. I find this the easiest and most logical way to build my own weather to my liking. It’s like starting with a clean canvas.
But today (yes after more then a year) i found out that the maximum amount of pricipitation you can enter is predifined by the weather presets you are using.
So, if you’d like to have the maximum amount of precipitation you’ll have to start with the storm preset in order to achieve this.
Why is this so stupid? Am i missing something? Is there a way to start with clear weather (no wind, no clouds no nothing) where you can build everything from the ground up while still being able to use the maximum precipitation? And can this be done from ingame, without having to do this from the main menu (i’d like to see what’s happening when i move the sliders)
If not, why does the preset define wich settings i can use as a maximum? if the weather system is capable of producing 30mm of precipitation i should be able to set it @ 30 ALWAYS right?
A bit of a guess here, but I wonder if there is simply some level of logic in the coding that in a crude sense just says in order to have precipitation over a certain level it must also be true that cloud coverage/density (and possibly other factors) must also be true?
I tend to use live weather mostly to be honest, just to mimic a natural variation as you would in the real world. I Have not really experimented with changing the weather manually - but would it be possible for you to create and save your own weather profile closer to what you want for future use?
The maximum you can dial in via the UI is 10mm/h regardless of preset. You’ll notice if you touch it in “Storm” it’ll jump from 30mm/h to 10mm/h.
The only way to increase it above 10mm/h is to create and edit a preset file then don’t touch it once loaded in the UI.
Plenty of threads on how much work the weather and UI needs so won’t go into that here.
I’ve got some presets available that may help if you do want to get into creating your own presets. Feel free to take them apart and use for your own needs:
The SDK documentation on putting together weather presets is OK, some useful information there but is incomplete or some features are documented but not implemented yet in the sim:
I use live weather most of the time too. But sometimes i like to fly in different scenarios at any place in the world.
I agree that cloud coverage and thickness should be taken into account when simulating the amount of precipitation. But i believe this is allready the case no matter wich preset you use. In clear weather it would also make no sense to have 10mm of rain. But still the option is there. When using a thick overcast cloud layer in clear weather preset, the maximum is still 10mm.
I could make my own custom weather preset with taking the storm as a base and remove any wind/clouds and use it as a starting point so that might be a uaefull idea.
But i still think it’s strange that you can’t just use the clear weather preset for that. For me it would make sense to just have all the options available no matter wich preset you use. I mean… The 30mm precipitation is somewhat hidden now if you don’t stumble across it like i did today😅
Could not agree more. They have said that work is underway to improve things both with the weather in the sim and the weather UI. I’m hoping we will see something new with the next Sim Update.
Would be great indeed. I always thought the rain was very minimal compared to real life. Atleast the 30mm get’s closer and also give’s better windshield effects. But adding a thick overcast layer with 10mm is always dissapointing.
