The disc version makes zero sense. Absolutely the work of an amateur

Just got the disc version. It forces you to install from all 10 DVDs and the code in the box is actually an activation code, not a download code. After ‘installation a la 1995’, swapping 10 discs like on a C-64 back in the days, you NEED to have Disc 1 on your drive to start the sim. How on earth, this makes no sense at all. First off, disc version is useless anyways because you NEED to online to play. There is no offline play after all. Second, what sense does it make to not let me download the entire thing after ‘Activation’, as if I bought the download version first place?

This is 1/10. Bless me I did not pay for it myself but got it purchased for me. This is completely hilarious.

I see it as a “collector’s” thing, to be kept closed (more value) and in years to come it could be worth something.
It could… depends on too many factors to be able to assess a “future value” right now .
It’s bad to say it and I can understand the various points of view about it, but I think this about " certain versions of certain games".
Unfortunately (I would add) now times have changed , the digital versions are to be considered predominant and increasingly the only ones that will remain … in the hope that they will remain “at least those” and not directly “streaming services” …that frighten me.

I always thought this is more for nostalgic purposes, some people put their precious software in the shelf.

Very odd, that one actually has to install those disks. And what happens if one of them gets a scratch or so ?

Unless you’re buying it for a collection item to add to an existing game or flight sim package collection, buying a physical copy of MSFS is pointless. You spend an hour installing, then have to spend another hour or more downloading all the updates - basically the whole thing since the discs have the original Aug 18 launch version. And then of course, you need Disc 1 in your drive at all times.

You can make an ISO of Disc 1, save it on your system and map it as a drive to avoid having to have Disc 1 in the drive at all times. But that’s just a janky workaround that ends up taking up more disc space than necessary.

OMG, I installed it from 10 discs and now it dls 98GB again! Are they just stupid? Why not just put an download code in the box, you know this code you can enter in the Xbox store. Give people who like disc swapping a good time, but us downloaders also a choice. Good lord. This is so in sync with their amateur updates that break more than they fix. What a joke.

4 hours of disc swapping and now I am looking at this? Are you guys just complete idiots or what? Just put a ■■■■■■■■ download code in this boxes!!!

Or just buy the digital version…

Yes, bummer! A completely pointless exercise.
Maybe collectors of physical media will buy it to store along with their equally pointless
collection of LP’s.

Hopefully you didn’t buy the floppy disk box set.

My lps don’t ask me to install Spotify though, so not entirely pointless

Hahaha. My son - who is an inveterate record collector - would say the same thing.
Though I still think records are useless. And I should know, I have lived half my life in an analog
only world.

A moment of pleasant [you made me chuckle] disagreement then.
Regards.

If I come across a boxed copy of MSFS I’m keeping it sealed and stored.
That way it’s nice and pristine for my grandchildren to either sell off at a garage sale or a grateful trashman recovers it from a landfill or trash can and continues the legacy!

I did not buy anything. I got it bought for me to benchmark&analyse it. I feel like I am being punished. Who hates me to do this to me?

The even more idiotic thing is hard drive space:

  1. It asked me for 100GB to install from disk.
  2. for download it asked for another 127GB.

So you need 227GB to install from DVDs as opposed to 127GB from direct download.

Good lord man, this is so in line with their amateur updates. These guys are going blind like some god-■■■■ youtube tech experts.

Maybe if you’d used Google for a fraction of the time that you’ve spent on here calling us all mugs for buying the sim because MS / Asobo have our money now and don’t care, and complaining about disappearing trees  and generally running both the sim and Asobo down, you would know what to expect as it’s clear as day to find and read.

In fact, quick google search and here you go:

# Microsoft Flight Simulator Disc FAQ

In this article, we have consolidated some of the most frequently asked questions about the Disc version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. You can find each question along with an answer below.

Q) Do I need to download any content after installing the DVDs?
A) The DVDs contain only the installer and the content (The Aircraft, World, etc). The core simulator is then downloaded via the internet during installation. This ensures you always have the latest version.

Q) Do I need a Microsoft account to install Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A) Yes. The install will guide you through the creation of an Xbox account if you do not already have one.

Q) Is an internet connection required?
A) Yes. An active internet connection is required during installation. An internet connection is also required to run the simulator.

Q) How will I update Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A) The Disc version of Microsoft Flight Simulator will check for updates when the simulator is launched.

Q) Do I need to keep the disc inserted to run Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A) Yes. Disc 1 will need to be inserted to launch Microsoft Flight Simulator to check the status of your activation.

Q) Is the Disc version of Microsoft Flight Simulator the same version as the download version?
A) Yes. The versions are the same.

Probably not in a strong position to be throwing the ‘idiot’ , ‘amateur’ and ‘stupid’ one liners around right now.

Well if your real life persona is anything like the one you have on here, that’s entirely possible :man_shrugging:

again, I did not buy it. I am being paid to takle a look at it and it was bought for me. Now I am sitting in front of this utterly stupid installer, like the worst I have seen in a long time, and think to myself ‘good jesus, thank god I have not paid for this myself’

my friend, this Q&A does not help one bit in making the entire process less idiotic. It even puts it black on white for future generations to learn and not repeat this mistake.

It made sense when the sim first came out. People were taking days in some cases to get the full sim to download reliably. I installed my disks and a smallish update and was flying within a few hours.

The whole “disk one must be installed to play” though is just nonsense and easily circumvented which really goes to prove just how poorly thought out the whole idea was. Nobody in this modern high tech world should be required to have a disk permanently in a drive to use software when there are other far better ways to validate a users right to use the software.
