The opinions of the flight sim community - A summary

Please add: The community feels the Beta phase should have been Open to us, and Extended considerably until certain things were right. Perhaps six months, but at least we would have been involved.

Yes, they could charge for the Open Beta, basically just like buying the game early with the understanding that it’s a Beta and they want feedback. Hundreds of thousands of people would have readily paid for this privilege.

Unfortunately, the community who wasnt part of the alpha/beta process has a skewed view of what the goals of the alpha/beta were. It had nothing to do with testing/providing feedback or developing systems. It was simply a means of generating server traffic to load test things. Based on the makeup and some of the technical discussions/experiments that were performed, I have very little doubt that the testing group could have solved a decent number of the current aircraft related bugs, if that was the goal of the program.

Aha, so then there was even another problem with the Alpha and Beta programs. Thank you!

The general consensus is that there was an internal QA team (the standard of which will depend on who you ask) that did most all of the actual functional testing. The alpha/beta group then cruised around under the guise of testing server load and reporting any bugs that were missed. With one very brief exception, there is 0 difference between the feedback chain from alpha/beta members to the devs and how we are currently communicating issues. Thats to say, any complaints were directed to the zendesk link.

Yeah this isn’t a concern at all. We’ve got to stop living in the past.

My first experience with Microsoft Flight Simulator was 25 years ago with Flight Simulator for Windows 95 and have been a loyal Microsoft customer for all subsequent versions (except Flight).
The last full simulator they released was 14 years ago in 2006 (FSX).
So you could say that I am somewhat of a seasoned flight simmer.
Experienced simmers may feel somewhat underwhelmed by the issues they found and most importantly the new unsuspecting generation of flight simmers who purchased this product may feel a little overwhelmed with its complexity. However, the only comment I have to offer about all this is that I’m not surprised and unfortunately in a lot of cases all this is quite normal.
I say this because I too am responsible for deploying new products/services for a small IT company.
For those who find that Microsoft deployed the simulator too early I understand the frustration but I don’t agree with it because there is only so much a developer can develop and QA on their own.
Also when a company invests millions in developing a new product/service there comes a time when they have to take a decision and set a deployment assuming they can deliver a stable version 1.
Otherwise there could be no revenue coming in for months and even years and which could tank the project.
Also feedback from thousands users (good or bad) is a necessary and integral part of development that will help refine and mature the product. From my point of view it’s a brand new platform and it obviously needs a few tweaks and there’s plenty of space to expand.
Microsoft is no slouch in patching issues and improving their products so let’s wait and see what they do.
Also keep in mind that 3rd party developers now have a new platform to work and sell their add-ons.
After 1 week of discovering this new sim I must say that I quite enjoyed it with a few exceptions as pointed out in the first post.
Let’s remember that above all this is a a fresh new start after 14 years.
As an old simmer this me makes very happy.

If I could add an item to the first post it would be to request an option to save custom graphics settings.
I can go all out on the graphics when I’m flying in the bush but my current computer gets a bit
overwhelmed in heavily populated areas and/or big airports. So being able to load a custom graphics
profile at some point during a flight or before a flight would be handy.

Please don’t speak for me. I am thrilled to get to play this now. Just as most people would have been had they been told that beta testing was being expanded to include anyone that wanted to test. 99% of the people in THIS forum would have been ecstatic to play this in its current state. There is no “bad faith” here.

At some point, a game has to be released and money has to be earned or companies go bankrupt, contracts are broken, and livelihoods are affected. You cannot develop to perfection or you will never finish. The sim is good enough to be released.

Well it’s a flight simulator so I guess flight systems are pretty ‘foundational’.

Wow, post #1 for me. Honored to be here.

I do not agree with the way #19 is expressed. I am very happy with the weather facilities w/in MSFS as I don’t plan to use ‘live’ very much. The term “everyone” does not include me but I still feel like a member of the community. Thank you.

First of all, Welcome!

Allow me to explain. What I meant with #19 was one of the star features of MSFS, which excited many newcomers, was the ability to fly with the actual live weather anywhere and at any altitude in the world.

Live weather is paramount to simmers, especially those who prefer flying on VATSIM, as live weather allows for the closest replication of real time flights.

When it was discovered that live weather was buggy, this meant that those who were looking forward to flying through hurricanes or even simulating a commercial flight in real time compared to it’s real life counterpart, were all disappointed as wind data can make your flights vary heavily.

no one gonna mention advanced configs?

slave pc setups?

correct multi monitor support?

simconnect issues?

This is my first post here, so… I really love MSFS (I used FS9, FSX, P3D), however I uninstalled it and I’m waiting for 737 (the only plane I fly since FS9) from PMDG and my favorite airports to be released.
What I wish to be fixed/changed:

  • live weather (accuracy, so I don’t need to buy any 3DP addons)
  • option to completely hide toolbar at the top of the screen
  • manuals/tutorials
  • more user-friendly controllers UI
  • possibility to assign axis (not keys and buttons) for throttle cut, reverse thrust, flaps position (thought I don’t need FSUIPC anymore)
  • built-in wing view
  • built-in framerate/VRAM counter
  • one key to toggle pause (similar to “P” in FSX/P3D, not separate keys to enable and disable pause)
  • possibility to export file with all settings, key assignments and camera presets for aircraft (so we can backup it and import later eg. after fresh Windows and sim install).
I think that’s all for now.
    Cheers!

I’m part of the community, but I’ll never give you a mandate to speak for me. So please do not use “community” if you want provide feedback, takl for yourself or name people which gives you mandate to speak for them.

Not sure about VRAM, but FPS counter is present in game with many other stats and it clearly tell you if you struggling with CPU or GPU at any moment of flight. Just go to options and enable developer mode. New menu will popup and there is option to show some kind of profiler

Apart from I think Southampton and Portsmouth in the south of England, I’m not aware anywhere else in the UK has it either.

You need to change the title to include " and issues" however as these are not all opinions but facts of real issues that are actually happening.

There was too many to list!

Jeff, you should have shown the Weather selection on screen as well to show that you have Live Weather enabled and not a custom preset which I am sure most people don’t realize is what it always defaults to. However, I’m not saying that you did that as I know you know that and I know that winds and Live weather is a bust right now.

Understood. I can assure you I was in live settings.

Hi,
Here is what I miss in this sim:

  1. The camera following the AI aircraft and the list of AI aircraft.
I used to spend long time watching I aircraft moving around in an airport or approaching and landing. It was like watching fish in a bowl.
  2. A keyboard shortcut to toggle between full screen and window screen.
  3. The nav aids shown in the GPS/VFR map.

Cheers
